2004 Ford F-150: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2004 Ford F-150
On the 2004 Ford F-150, the failure owners report most often is other visibility problem, and the reports cluster around 62,000 miles. The earliest to appear is CV axle or driveshaft failure, reported by a median of 2,500 miles. Overall it scores 67 out of 100, high risk for a 2004.
High risk for a 2004 — 160th riskiest of the 329 2004 vehicles we can rate. 2,431 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What breaks on the 2004 Ford F-150
Owners have reported 76 named failure modes on the 2004 Ford F-150, and the three most-reported carry 43% of everything filed.
Other visibility problem leads with 491 reports, about 1.5 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 45k to 85,000 miles.
Window regulator or power window failure follows with 410 reports, usually reported between 49k to 84,000 miles.
Other engine problem follows with 150 reports, usually reported between 48k to 109,000 miles. 11 of those reports mention a fire.
By system, the reports fall mostly into body (542), glass (494) and engine (290).
At what mileage it happens
2,085 of the reports on the 2004 Ford F-150 came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 59,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 41% by 50,000 miles, 82% by 100,000 miles and 96% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 22 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 15% of the dated reports.
30% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: CV axle or driveshaft failure around 3k, ABS module or sensor failure around 5k, shifter, linkage or stuck-in-park failure around 5k and other suspension problem around 8k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 22 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 80 mention a crash, 51 a fire, 57 an injury and 3 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.59, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other visibility problem at $150–$1,400, window regulator or power window failure at $250–$900, other engine problem at $300–$4,000 and other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
23% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2004 Ford F-150 draws about 7.3 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 83rd percentile of complaint rates among 2004 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 331,250 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2004 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other visibility problem
Consumer noticed that after the windshield wipers went off the front windshield became blurry. This caused poor visibility to the driver. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced the windshield three times. However, the problem recurred. *ak consumer also had concern with vibration under the vehicle. Dealer found that the vibration is coming from the drivershaft, which was replaced by the dealer. *la
Consumer indicated that windshield had a wave in it which distorted the vision while driving. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer on three occasions, and had it replaced. However, the problem recurred.*ak
Window regulator or power window failure
Using power window controller to roll up vehicle windows, a loud bang sound like a gun going off happens, then the window(s) fall into the door frame. Dealer stated the problem is a faulty window regulator. I'm one of approximately 30 people at this dealership with this problem. Currently the dealer is stating the part is on a national back order and could be months before it is in. The vehicle is rendered useless, unable to roll up windows or secure the vehicle. *jb
I have a 2004 f-150 fx4 that has 6 power windows, including the backslider and sun-roof. I purchased this vehicle in dec. Of 04. When the truck was at 35000 the driver window fell into the door, I live in the hottest city in az. The dealer was happy to fix the problem, but the parts were on back order, because this is a common problem for this year truck. That is what the dealer told me! The solution mean while, a pair of visegrips on the window frame rail, that actually work great even though I had to do it myself. They did fix the window under warranty, but a week later the passenger window hit the floor too. Luckily still under warranty, but while taking the truck in for the passenger window the backslider quit working so they fixed it as well. 3 down 2 to go! Two weeks later the driver rear window makes a popping sound and went into the door. #4 and would you guess 14 miles out of warranty, $388 later window is fine. One week to the day driving to phoenix az. A slight bite cooler then we are, the passenger rear window popped and slowly went down. After an hour in a wal-mart parking lot I got the window clamped up. The dealer…
Other engine problem
I bought my 2004 ford f-150 supercrew fx4 feb. 17, 2004.I started having trouble with the A/C system as soon as it started to get hot[ above 85 degrees ] I brought it to the dealer[scarsdale ford ] twice and they tell me it is in spec ,but it does not cool the cab, I checked the temp coming out of the vents and it stays at 43 degrees, my wifes pathfinder blows at 28 degrees, a big difference.I am now waiting for a ford engineer to show up at the dealer ship.t o speak frankly I am very upset with the way this is being handle by ford.I have had many different car over the years and never had this problem.*ak
Truck continues to stall/engine dies when driving. Usually stops when slowing down or starting from a stop. Commonly dies at intersections/stop sings etc. Has stoped on highway when slowing down making it very difficult to control.*ak
Recalls on the 2004 model year
NHTSA has issued 16 recall campaigns covering the 2004 Ford F-150, affecting an estimated 485,780 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting, air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, exterior lighting:headlights and exterior lighting. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

How it ranks in the 2004 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports

How 2004 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2004 — 160th riskiest of the 329 2004 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 30 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 63 and 2007 worst at 80, with 2004 itself at 67.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996 scores lower than 2004 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2004–2008 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 67 and 2007 the weakest at 80.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2004-2008 generation, 2004 Ford F-150 scores best at 67 and 2007 Ford F-150 worst at 80.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: CV axle or driveshaft failure from about 100, other steering problem from about 169, other suspension problem from about 795 and no-start or intermittent start failure from about 2k.
On a 2004 Ford F-150 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether CV axle or driveshaft failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
What this page cannot tell you
2,431 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 2,431 reports, 2,085 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 86% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
