2007 GMC Envoy: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2007 GMC Envoy
On the 2007 GMC Envoy, the failure owners report most often is fuel gauge or level sensor failure, and the reports cluster around 55,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other fuel system problem, reported by a median of 50,000 miles. Overall it scores 63 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.
High risk for a 2007 — 315th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 285 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 37 named failure modes on the 2007 GMC Envoy, and the three most-reported carry 42% of everything filed.
Fuel gauge or level sensor failure leads with 55 reports, about 2.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 43k to 70,000 miles.
Other electrical problem follows with 34 reports, usually reported between 66k to 102,500 miles. 7 of those reports mention a fire.
Other lighting problem follows with 32 reports, usually reported between 95k to 142,500 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into fuel (90), lighting (54) and electrical (46).
The mileage the reports cluster at
240 of the reports on the 2007 GMC Envoy came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 78,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 23% by 50,000 miles, 69% by 100,000 miles and 92% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 3 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 50,000 and 60,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.
7% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, so this is mostly a story about older, higher-mileage cars.
In the order they tend to show up: other fuel system problem around 49k, fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure around 52k, fuel gauge or level sensor failure around 54k and other visibility problem around 89k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 3 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 4 mention a crash, 23 a fire and 5 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.30, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: fuel gauge or level sensor failure at $300–$1,200, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other lighting problem at $120–$1,200 and other fuel system problem at $300–$2,200. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
7% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 GMC Envoy draws about 12 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 88th percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 23,181 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Fuel gauge or level sensor failure
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 gmc envoy. The fuel gauges on the instrument control panel inaccurately displays the amount of fuel present in the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The technician stated this was a common failure for her model type. He then added that the failure was not covered under warranty, so she was ineligible for a free remedy. The current and failure mileages were 39,200. Updated 3/8/10 *cn the consumer also stated that the rear hatch was inoperative and when it rained the windows would get stuck. Updated 05/13/10.*jb
Fuel sending unit is defective after 40,000 miles. Tank readings inaccurate. I live in an urban area where it is not safe to be out of fuel and broken down on side of road. Dealer admits this problem is common for gm envoy/rainer/trailblazer - numerous online forums list this as a defect - yet gm does nothing to rectify the problem. Item is out of warranty and gm won't cover it. *tr
Other electrical problem
I had been driving for about ten minutes when the security light on my instrument panel came on. This is the light indicating the passlock system had initiated. My steering wheel locked up so that I could not turn it at all, and the car began decelerating quickly on its own. *tt
The drivers door window switch got warm then stopped working, all other windows work with there switches. I am a body tech so I pull the switch out and found the it got so hot it melted. To my surprise it did not trip a breaker or blew a fuse. *tr
Other lighting problem
I took my vehicle in for an oil change and the shop noticed that my brake lights did not work. I left the shop and decided to investigate the problem myself. After replacing all of the bulbs and discovering that the problem was elsewhere. I took the car to a dealership and they found that the problem existed under the dash, they determined that every time I hit brakes, the wires were being stripped and caused a short. Recalls on the 2007 model year
NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2007 GMC Envoy, affecting an estimated 66,383 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover visibility:power window devices and controls, exterior lighting:headlights and electrical system. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy vehicles, and 2006 GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT vehicles. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
- Consequence
- The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15700.

- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
- Consequence
- Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

How it ranks in the 2007 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Where 2007 sits in the model line
High risk for a 2007 — 315th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2009 comes out best at 58 and 2000 worst at 76, with 2007 itself at 63.
If the model year is negotiable, 2009 and 1998 score lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2001–2009 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 58 and 2002 the weakest at 72.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2001-2009 generation, 2009 GMC Envoy scores best at 58 and 2002 GMC Envoy worst at 72.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other fuel system problem from about 38k, fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure from about 39k, fuel gauge or level sensor failure from about 43k and other visibility problem from about 60k.
On a 2007 GMC Envoy with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other fuel system problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
The limits of complaint data
285 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 285 reports, 240 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 84% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2007 GMC Envoy?
The most-reported failures are fuel gauge or level sensor failure (55 reports, median 55,000 miles), other electrical problem (34 reports, median 97,500 miles) and other lighting problem (32 reports, median 117,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2007 GMC Envoy problems start?
Other fuel system problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 50,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 40,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 78,000 miles.
Is the 2007 GMC Envoy reliable?
It scores 63 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 315th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the GMC Envoy is best?
Within the 2001–2009 generation, 2009 scores best at 58 out of 100 and 2002 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
