2002 GMC Envoy: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2002 GMC Envoy
On the 2002 GMC Envoy, the failure owners report most often is other engine problem, and the reports cluster around 57,500 miles. The earliest to appear is other visibility problem, reported by a median of 20,000 miles. Overall it scores 72 out of 100, high risk for a 2002.
High risk for a 2002 — 85th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. 629 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What breaks on the 2002 GMC Envoy
Owners have reported 65 named failure modes on the 2002 GMC Envoy, and the three most-reported carry 22% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other engine problem leads with 58 reports, about 0.7 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 20k to 110,000 miles.
Other electrical problem follows with 46 reports, usually reported between 47k to 132,500 miles. 5 of those reports mention a fire.
Other visibility problem follows with 35 reports, usually reported between 15k to 75,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into electrical (97), engine (77) and transmission (56).
The mileage the reports cluster at
362 of the reports on the 2002 GMC Envoy came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 64,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 41% by 50,000 miles, 69% by 100,000 miles and 86% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 11 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 10% of the dated reports.
28% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other visibility problem around 18k, control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure around 35k, cooling fan failure around 41k and other engine problem around 57k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 11 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 38 mention a crash, 17 a fire and 30 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.65, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other visibility problem at $150–$1,400 and other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
30% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2002 GMC Envoy draws about 8.0 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 85th percentile of complaint rates among 2002 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 78,575 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2002 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.
What owners wrote
Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.
Other engine problem
When vehicle is at a complete stop or idling engine will die out. The dealership reprogrammed the main computer chip, but the problem recurred. They the replaced the chip. Please provide more details.
We experienced, like a lot of people who posted complaints with NHTSA about engine failure in envoys that are not even year old or over 10,000 miles. We had an experience with our 2002 envoy where on thurs. 12/19 my husband was accelerating off of a take off ramp onto the beltway and all of a sudden he heard a loud clattering noise. He pulled over to the shoulder and could not go any further. We had it towed to the gmc dealer and they determined that there was a drive train failure with pieces found down to the six cyclinder head. They are replacing the engine with an "updated" engine, which means to me that there was a problem with the first run engines. According to complaints posted to your website this has happened to lots of people. When is the recall coming? Stopping abruptly in the middle of the highway is very dangerous. Does it take someone to get killed before a recall can be done? We are in negotiations with gmc at this time. I would like a response to my e-mail.
Other electrical problem
The gmc envoy's electronics fail. No dash instruments or radio controls. Happens intermittently. Occurs when driving. The engine races unexpectedly. This has happened 10 to 12 times. The slv-truck is currently at the dealer who is once again attempting to repair it.*jb
My 2002 gmc envoy lost all power three times at high rates of speed. The first time we had it serviced and I was told a module needed replaced. The second time, the car shut down at highway speeds but restarted approximately 15 minutes later but then the same thing happened again the next day while my wife was driving home from work traveling at 65 MPH down a highway. We had it serviced again and this time I was told it was due to a loose wiring harnass. Car has had numerous problems since and it is an unsafe vehicle for my family to be transported in.
Other visibility problem
Vehicle 2002 gmc envoy [xxx] outside rearview mirrors adjust themselves to odd positions almost daily or every time I drive this vehicle. It is necessary for me to stop the vehicle and place the transmission in park and then push the memory button as many as 4 times to get the mirrors in proper position, or adjust the mirror while driving using the joy stick control. The dealer has not been able to correct the problem except asking me to return the vehicle for the 3rd time. Incident date is every day the vehicle is driven thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While waiting to proceed in traffic with foot on brake and car in drive, engine suddenly stalled out and was unable to be restarted. Also, driverside mirror keeps resetting when unlocking the automatic doors. Wipers don't function properly when in intermittent mode. Car is at dealer now, hopefully they can resolve this. *ak vehicle is equipped with rainsense automatic rain sensing wipers. Rainsense works only when in intermittent mode. Settings adjust sensitivity of wipers but not frequency. Wiper fails to make a complete smooth pass across windshield. They stop several times during their sweep and stutter. After a few second pause they resume their sweep. Wipers work fine when set to standard high or low wiper settings. *kmb
Recalls on the 2002 model year
NHTSA has issued 14 recall campaigns covering the 2002 GMC Envoy, affecting an estimated 403,245 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover exterior lighting:headlights, engine and engine cooling, seat belts and visibility:windshield wiper/washer. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
308 vehicles 2007-02-26- Defect
- Certain maxzone headlight assemblies, depo brand, p/no 335-1120l-as, sold for use as aftermarket equipment for the above listed passenger vehicles. During production the lamp housing shape deformed distorting the assembly angle of the reflector and influenced the aiming position. These headlamps fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
- Consequence
- Decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash.
- Remedy
- Maxzone will notify owners and offer reimbursement for any noncompliant headlights. The recall began on february 16, 2007. Owners may contact maxzone at 909-822-3288.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
29,951 vehicles 2004-06-23- Defect
- Some sport utility vehicles equipped with an electronically controlled air suspension (ecas) have a condition in which the ecas may produce a brief electrical spike while the vehicle is operating. This electrical spike can disrupt the powertrain control module (PCM) causing the vehicle to stall.
- Consequence
- If the spike damages the PCM, the vehicle may not restart. If this happens while the vehicle is moving, a crash could occur without prior warning.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a wiring harness. The recall will begin on august 19, 2004. Owners should contact oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

- Certain light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 209, "seat belt assemblies." one of the two sensors in the driver's and front passenger's seat belt retractors could be inoperative. The seat belt retractors will lock when the belt webbing is extracted during a crash; however, the mechanism that locks the seat belt retractor when the vehicle decelerates quickly, such as heavy braking, may not operate as intended.
- Consequence
- If this were to occur, the safety belt may not restrain the occupant as intended during a crash, and could result in injury to the occupant.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the driver and front passenger safety belt retractors, and replace them if necessary. Owner notification began on june 24, 2004. Owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.
VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
581,394 vehicles 2004-02-04- Defect
- Certain sport utility vehicles have windshield wiper systems that will not turn on, cease operation while in use, fail to turn off/on by themselves (moisture sensitive wiper system), or have continuous windshield washer pump operation because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module.
- Consequence
- Depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will cover the windshield wiper module vent hole with a patch. Also, the wiper motor, circuit board, and electrical connector will be inspected to signs of water intrusion and/or corrosion and be replaced as required. The recall began july 6, 2004. Owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
895 vehicles 2001-09-05- Defect
- Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles (4 wheel-drive). Some of these vehicles were built with a range shift collar in the transmission transfer case that contains cracks.
- Consequence
- This condition could result in a complete fracture of the range shift collar and subsequent loss of vehicle forward and reverse gears, and the inability to maintain "park" position. This increases the risk of a vehicle crash resulting from unintended movement of a parked vehicle.
- Remedy
- Dealers will replace the transfer cases and update the control module calibration. Owner notification began september 6, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.
Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.
How it ranks in the 2002 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

How 2002 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2002 — 85th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2009 comes out best at 58 and 2000 worst at 76, with 2002 itself at 72.
If the model year is negotiable, 2009, 1998, 2007, 2008, 2004, 2006 and 2005 score lower than 2002 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2001–2009 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 58 and 2002 the weakest at 72.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2001-2009 generation, 2009 GMC Envoy scores best at 58 and 2002 GMC Envoy worst at 72.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: cooling fan failure from about 500, control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure from about 10k, other visibility problem from about 15k and other engine problem from about 20k.
On a 2002 GMC Envoy with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether cooling fan failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
Where these figures stop being useful
629 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 629 reports, 362 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 58% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2002 GMC Envoy?
The most-reported failures are other engine problem (58 reports, median 57,500 miles), other electrical problem (46 reports, median 90,000 miles) and other visibility problem (35 reports, median 20,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2002 GMC Envoy problems start?
Other visibility problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 20,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 15,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 64,000 miles.
Is the 2002 GMC Envoy reliable?
It scores 72 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 85th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2002 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the GMC Envoy is best?
Within the 2001–2009 generation, 2009 scores best at 58 out of 100 and 2002 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
