2006 GMC Envoy: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2006 GMC Envoy
On the 2006 GMC Envoy, the failure owners report most often is fuel gauge or level sensor failure, and the reports cluster around 62,500 miles. The earliest to appear is fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure, reported by a median of 60,000 miles. Overall it scores 67 out of 100, high risk for a 2006.
High risk for a 2006 — 211th riskiest of the 343 2006 vehicles we can rate. 470 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 45 named failure modes on the 2006 GMC Envoy, and the three most-reported carry 43% of everything filed.
Fuel gauge or level sensor failure leads with 116 reports, about 5.0 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 47k to 75,000 miles.
Other electrical problem follows with 44 reports, usually reported between 67k to 120,000 miles. 12 of those reports mention a fire.
Other fuel system problem follows with 44 reports, usually reported between 50k to 82,500 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into fuel (208), electrical (67) and lighting (51).
The mileage the reports cluster at
398 of the reports on the 2006 GMC Envoy came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 81,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 19% by 50,000 miles, 65% by 100,000 miles and 90% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 9 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 60,000 and 70,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.
7% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, so this is mostly a story about older, higher-mileage cars.
In the order they tend to show up: fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure around 60k, fuel gauge or level sensor failure around 62k, other fuel system problem around 68k and fuel pump failure around 77k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 9 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

- Dashed the median reported mileage
How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 8 mention a crash, 31 a fire and 6 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.47, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: fuel gauge or level sensor failure at $300–$1,200, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other fuel system problem at $300–$2,200 and fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure at $250–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
12% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2006 GMC Envoy draws about 20 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 92nd percentile of complaint rates among 2006 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 23,181 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2006 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Fuel gauge or level sensor failure
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 gmc envoy. The contact smelled a burning odor coming from the vehicle and parked it overnight. The following morning, the air conditioning system would not operate. The dealer stated that there was a heating resistor that melted some of the wires in the ignition system. The wiring harness was replaced and the dealer advised the contact not to activate the air conditioning system on low power; only medium and high due to the power needed by the blower when running on low. After the repairs were made to the wiring harness, the fuel gauge became inoperable on the instrument panel. The failure mileage was 26,000 and current mileage was 27,000.

Other electrical problem
I parked my car and went into a store and when I came out I could smell a burning smell. My car would not unlock from the drivers door and when I got into my car I seen that my electrical panel on the drivers side blew up. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 gmc envoy. While driving at speeds of 65 MPH, the power door lock switch caught on fire. The dealer advised the vehicle could be repaired but the part needed to make the necessary repairs was not available and would not be available for another six months. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 65,000. Updated 11/03/10. *lj
Other fuel system problem
I've owned my 2006 envoy for about a year when the gas gage kept saying that it was empty even though it was full. I had it fixed but it is upsetting I had to come up with the money to fix this problem myself. I find it interesting there are so many other complaints about this issue and there is nothing being done about it. *tr
I own a 2006 gmc envoy, in 2007 the fuel sensor stopped working at approximately 20k miles, so I couldn't tell how much gas I had, when full it registers as empty, it was supposedly fixed and then the fuel line came apart while I was driving. Now I am once again having the same issue with the fuel sensor, the vehicle now has 80k miles. I have contacted gm, but they are of no help. Upon checking the message boards there are thousands of envoys & trailblazers with the same issue. *tr
Recalls on the 2006 model year
NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2006 GMC Envoy, affecting an estimated 72,123 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover visibility:power window devices and controls, exterior lighting:headlights and electrical system. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy vehicles, and 2006 GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT vehicles. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
- Consequence
- The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15700.

- Certain maxzone headlight assemblies, depo brand, p/no 335-1120l-as, sold for use as aftermarket equipment for the above listed passenger vehicles. During production the lamp housing shape deformed distorting the assembly angle of the reflector and influenced the aiming position. These headlamps fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
- Consequence
- Decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash.
- Remedy
- Maxzone will notify owners and offer reimbursement for any noncompliant headlights. The recall began on february 16, 2007. Owners may contact maxzone at 909-822-3288.
AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
794 vehicles 2006-10-31- Defect
- Certain vehicles originally built with cloth seats that were equipped with an automatic air bag passenger sensing system and later reupholstered with aftermarket leather seat cover kits are involved. Testing has indicated that the aftermarket leather seat covers can cause the passenger sensing system to malfunction.
- Consequence
- If the passenger sensing system malfunctions, the front air bag on the passenger side may be disabled when it should be enabled, or enabled when it should be disabled. In either case, in the event of a crash that requires air bag deployment, a front passenger's level of injury may be increased.
- Remedy
- Because a replacement leather seat cover that is compatible with the passenger sensing system is not available, general motors (gm) will repurchase these vehicles in accordance with the terms stated in gm's letter to owners. The recall began on november 6, 2006. Owners should contact gm at 1-877-477-1022 to begin the process of repurchasing their vehicle.

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
123,592 vehicles 2005-10-05- Defect
- Certain passenger vehicles may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. Under extreme steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking, the hose may fracture and leak fluid.
- Consequence
- If this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost and increased steering effort would be required. On vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be required. If the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine compartment fire could occur.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace them if required. The recall will begin on october 14, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.

How it ranks in the 2006 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
Where 2006 sits in the model line
High risk for a 2006 — 211th riskiest of the 343 2006 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2009 comes out best at 58 and 2000 worst at 76, with 2006 itself at 67.
If the model year is negotiable, 2009, 1998 and 2007 score lower than 2006 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2001–2009 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 58 and 2002 the weakest at 72.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2001-2009 generation, 2009 GMC Envoy scores best at 58 and 2002 GMC Envoy worst at 72.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure from about 43k, fuel gauge or level sensor failure from about 47k, other fuel system problem from about 50k and headlight failure or clouding from about 65k.
On a 2006 GMC Envoy with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
Where these figures stop being useful
470 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 470 reports, 398 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 85% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2006 GMC Envoy?
The most-reported failures are fuel gauge or level sensor failure (116 reports, median 62,500 miles), other electrical problem (44 reports, median 97,500 miles) and other fuel system problem (44 reports, median 67,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2006 GMC Envoy problems start?
Fuel tank, filler or evap failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 60,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 42,500 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 81,000 miles.
Is the 2006 GMC Envoy reliable?
It scores 67 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 211th riskiest of the 343 2006 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2006 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the GMC Envoy is best?
Within the 2001–2009 generation, 2009 scores best at 58 out of 100 and 2002 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
