1996 GMC Envoy: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 1996 GMC Envoy

Only 3 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 1996 GMC Envoy, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported wiring harness or short circuit.

When each failure gets reported

Median
  1. Wiring harness or short circuit 53k
  2. Other electrical problem

How reports accumulate

Share of reports filed by each mileage

Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Mileage figures are percentiles of owner-reported readings. Click a column to sort.
Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Wiring harness or short circuit electrical 2 2 — 53k — 0.1 $400–$3,500 High
Other electrical problem electrical 1 0 — — — 0.1 $250–$2,000 Moderate

This year had no usable recall paperwork, so the fleet-size estimate is the median of other years of the same model. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Wiring harness or short circuit

Hello, we purchased the 2006 yukon denali envoy with low mileage between 30,000 ' 45,000 miles. We didn't expect to run into major ( throttle body and fuel sensor'tank embedded) problems. There are many complaints lodged on the internet about these dtc engine trouble codes (p2135, p0463). The sudden loss of power in the middle of traffic may cause an accident. According to gmc technical service bulletins in correcting the problem, the first dealer told me they must follow a diagnostic troubleshooting flow chart to resolution. The first gm/gmc dealer stated the first stage of the diagnostic flowchart says the throttle body should be cleaned and not replaced. The reason not initially replaced is because the throttle body is a high priced item. We then took it back to the 1st dealer at which the diagnostical flowchart was again used. According to the flowchart the next course of action calls for replacement of the throttle body. Again it was short lived. If the flowchart diagrams are outdated and poorly designed, they should be updated. The technical service bulletins need to be better written so unnecessary costly steps for the…

Every year of the GMC Envoy

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 1996-2000 generation, 1998 GMC Envoy scores best at 59 and 2000 GMC Envoy worst at 76.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 1996 GMC Envoy are wiring harness or short circuit (2 reports, around 53k miles) and other electrical problem (1 report). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Other years of the same model do have enough: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The mechanical parts are often shared across those years, so their pages are the better guide to what this one is likely to do, with the caveat that a shared part is not a shared production line.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
