2000 Chevrolet Silverado: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado
On the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, the failure owners report most often is ABS module or sensor failure, and the reports cluster around 52,000 miles. The earliest to appear is CV axle or driveshaft failure, reported by a median of 15,000 miles. Overall it scores 71 out of 100, high risk for a 2000.
High risk for a 2000 — 69th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. 1,614 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 69 named failure modes on the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, and the three most-reported carry 29% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
ABS module or sensor failure leads with 287 reports, about 2.1 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 40k to 76,000 miles.
Loss of braking follows with 99 reports, usually reported between 50k to 140,000 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 90 reports, usually reported between 32k to 100,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into brakes (644), body (137) and engine (108).
When these failures get reported
755 of the reports on the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 55,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 43% by 50,000 miles, 82% by 100,000 miles and 94% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 12 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, which alone holds 14% of the dated reports.
21% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: CV axle or driveshaft failure around 15k, piston, ring or cylinder wall damage around 15k, premature brake pad or rotor wear around 36k and other speed control problem around 40k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 12 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 131 mention a crash, 10 a fire, 56 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.77, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: ABS module or sensor failure at $500–$2,400, loss of braking at $400–$3,000, other brake problem at $300–$1,800 and other wheel or tire problem at $200–$1,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
16% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado draws about 12 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 89th percentile of complaint rates among 2000 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 134,228 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2000 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.
What owners wrote
Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.
ABS module or sensor failure
Antilock system activated without cause and disabled the braking system. This happened on dry pavement at speeds below 30 MPH when coming to a normal stop. This happened today and almost everytime I dare to drive the truck.
Anti-lock brake light comes on frequently and as a result the anti-lock brakes don't work. After two trips to the dealer, was told two different components could be at fault, each cost between $650-750 to repair and that they weren't sure which component was at fault.
Loss of braking
My brakes failed after accelerating from being stopped at a red light. The light turned yellow before we were into the intersection when the vehicle in front of me stopped, speed was less than 10 MPH. I attempted to stop on a bumpy dry surface while braking the pedal went to the floor and hit the vehicle in front of me. Dealership claims brakes were within specifications set by manufacture. Something needs to be done about this problem, there are too many complaints dealing with the ABS system on the silverado. Please do something to correct this problem. *nlm
Brakes fail at low speed, try to go into anti-lock. Changed complete brakes, rotors, pads etc. On all four(4) wheels of the vehicle. Problem still exists. Scheduled for recheck september 30/03 for review of hoses and lines also will put on computor for fault readings. Truck crashed into a wood pile at our summer home no personnal injuries but some paint scratching. Disconnected the fuse for the anti-lock brakes had no problem with brakes failing just that ABS light and hand brake light stayed on all the time. Put the fuse back in and problem still exists this is why it will be rechecked september 30/03 to read faults as they are still failing. Very scarey when all of a sudden no brakes at low speed.
Other brake problem
While slowly pulling in to my parking spot at work, I applied the brakes to stop.to my amazment, the brake pedel was extreamly hard. I had approx. 2 seconds to react before I rolled into an exhuast fan attched to a building. After a few taps on the brake pedel it was still hard as steel.by this time I had impacted with the exhaust fan. The damage to my truck was bad enough, however this outcome could have been far more serious if a co-worker walking out of the door next to the exhaust fan was not as quick thinking as he was.
The hydraulic pump was inoperative. While backing the vehicle out of driveway, the hydraulic pump failed to work. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated they would look at it. But consumer had not heard anything about it. *ak the hydraulic pump shaft severed while the consumer was driving. The vehicle had become impossible to steer . The mechanic stated this wasn't the first incident with this make/model. *scc *jb
Recalls on the 2000 model year
NHTSA has issued 20 recall campaigns covering the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, affecting an estimated 627,047 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover exterior lighting:headlights, exterior lighting and wheels:hub. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How 2000 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2000 — 69th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 21 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 66 and 2013 worst at 82, with 2000 itself at 71.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1998 and 2008 score lower than 2000 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 1999–2006 generation specifically, 1999 is the strongest year at 69 and 2006 the weakest at 77.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 1999-2006 generation, 1999 Chevrolet Silverado scores best at 69 and 2006 Chevrolet Silverado worst at 77.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: CV axle or driveshaft failure from about 12k, piston, ring or cylinder wall damage from about 15k, premature brake pad or rotor wear from about 20k and other speed control problem from about 27k.
On a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether CV axle or driveshaft failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
1,614 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 1,614 reports, 755 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 47% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado?
The most-reported failures are abs module or sensor failure (287 reports, median 52,000 miles), loss of braking (99 reports, median 82,500 miles) and other brake problem (90 reports, median 57,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2000 Chevrolet Silverado problems start?
Cv axle or driveshaft failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 15,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 10,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 55,000 miles.
Is the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado reliable?
It scores 71 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 69th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2000 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Chevrolet Silverado is best?
Within the 1999–2006 generation, 1999 scores best at 69 out of 100 and 2006 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
