2005 Chevrolet Silverado: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado
On the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, the failure owners report most often is instrument cluster or gauge failure, and the reports cluster around 70,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other suspension problem, reported by a median of 200 miles. Overall it scores 72 out of 100, high risk for a 2005.
High risk for a 2005 — 68th riskiest of the 320 2005 vehicles we can rate. 361 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 53 named failure modes on the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, and the three most-reported carry 25% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Instrument cluster or gauge failure leads with 32 reports, about 0.8 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 49k to 97,500 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 32 reports, usually reported between 30k to 130,000 miles.
Other electrical problem follows with 25 reports, usually reported between 39k to 95,000 miles. 3 of those reports mention a fire.
By system, the reports fall mostly into brakes (85), electrical (39) and infotainment (32).
When these failures get reported
307 of the reports on the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 53,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 47% by 50,000 miles, 80% by 100,000 miles and 96% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 22% of the dated reports.
39% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.
In the order they tend to show up: other suspension problem around 200, other powertrain problem around 6k, other body or interior problem around 20k and other wheel or tire problem around 23k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 2 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 13 mention a crash, 8 a fire and 9 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.20, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: instrument cluster or gauge failure at $350–$1,400, other brake problem at $300–$1,800, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000 and other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
18% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado draws about 9.3 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 86th percentile of complaint rates among 2005 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 38,852 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2005 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Instrument cluster or gauge failure
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that the speedometer works intermittently. It usually fails to operate when driving 65 MPH and greater. He spoke with the dealer and they stated that the speedometer needed to be replaced. The current mileage was 47,488 and failure mileage was 38,480.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet silverado. While driving approximately 5 MPH, the speedometer indicated that the vehicle was traveling 110 MPH. The speedometer fails to display the correct speed. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by a dealer. The current and failure mileages were 65,000.
Other brake problem
I reported that the vehicle did not seem to want to move from a stopped position. Approximately three weeks later the problem repeated itself but with the service brake system lights coming on.*ak
2005 silverado ls extended cab: extreme heat with smoke billowing from the front disc brakes. Extremely hot hubs left and right front. Proir to todays pre-fire conditons, I reported to the chevrolet dealer that the front brakes seem to "stick" while driving and were hot with a burning smell. (truck was purchased last month and has only 466 miles) intermittent hot hubs and burn smell, but no smoke. Today, reporting fire conditions with the extreme heat and billowing smoke. Left a message to the chevrolet dealer and will put in their shop tommorrow the 8th of april 2005.*ak
Other electrical problem
While the driving down the road , I pressed the release button on the steering wheel to adjust, then the engine cut off, all the panel gauge icons lighted up and the digital display for the "p r d r l" cycled across. I had to put the car in neutral to restart the engine. Once I got home, I was able to duplicate the problem while idling in park on the drive way. This is a new silverado purchased june 24, 2005. Will take in to dealer asap. *nm
(1) it was 22 degrees outside and I went to turn on my heater while pulling away from the house. There was heat coming out but it was not blowing and the heaters control adjustment knobs were not clicking into place. No air was blowing from the front panels or to any panels. I couldn't even get the defroster to operate. I checked all the fuses as per the vehicle operators manual and all fuses were fine. On friday, 04jan08 I called turan foley chevrolet-cadillac-buick dealership where I had bought the truck back in january of 2005. I spoke to the service department supervisor and explained the problem. He advised me that it was my heaters resistor box and that it had melted. He also advised that he had seen at least 7 trucks that week alone for the same problem and that every 2-3 out of every 10 trucks has been having this problem but that no recall has been placed for this part yet. (2) the resistor box and the pigtail connector had both melted. I left my house in texas and returned to mississippi on almost a 700 mile trip w/o any heat in low 20 temperatures. (3) the dealerships service department replaced the malfunctioned parts…
Recalls on the 2005 model year
NHTSA has issued 14 recall campaigns covering the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, affecting an estimated 58,119 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover exterior lighting:headlights, wheels:hub, equipment:electrical and engine and engine cooling. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
123,592 vehicles 2005-10-05- Defect
- Certain passenger vehicles may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. Under extreme steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking, the hose may fracture and leak fluid.
- Consequence
- If this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost and increased steering effort would be required. On vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be required. If the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine compartment fire could occur.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace them if required. The recall will begin on october 14, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
PARKING BRAKE
90,242 vehicles 2005-04-22- Defect
- On certain pickup trucks equipped with manual transmissions and built with either pbr parking brake systems or trw parking brake systems, the parking brake friction linings may wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.
- Consequence
- If the parking brake does not hold, unintended vehicle movement could occur, which could result in a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with a pbr parking brake system. On vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system, dealers will install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly. The recall began on july 29, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
1,359,824 vehicles 2005-04-22- Defect
- On certain crew cab pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the 2nd row center occupant seat belt routing may make it difficult to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the hips of occupants, especially smaller occupants, seated in this position. Appropriate use of a child seat or booster seat, as recommended for small children, does improve the fit condition for this user group. In addition to instructions on proper infant and young child restraint (with child seats or boosters), special verbiage for restraining older child is included in the owner's…
- Consequence
- A lap portion of the seat belt routing that is not low and snug on the hips can allow the lap belt to ride up on an occupant's abdomen instead of fitting low around their hipbones, and therefore, can expose them to more risk of abdominal and internal organ injury.
- Remedy
- Dealers will cut open the guide loop, remove a portion of the loop, and then the remaining two sides should be folded over and secured with a retainer free of charge. The recall began on july 21, 2005. Owners may contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION:SHIFT PATTERN INDICATOR
7,194 vehicles 2005-02-14- Defect
- Certain sport utility vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 102, "transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock and transmission braking effect." under certain vehicle starting conditions, the shift lever position indicator located in the instrument panel cluster may not illuminate. If the shift lever position indicator does not illuminate, the driver may not know which gear the vehicle is in.
- Consequence
- The vehicle may move in an unintended direction resulting in possible injury to others outside of the vehicle.
- Remedy
- Dealers will reprogram the instrument panel cluster free of charge. The recall began on february 14, 2005. Owners may contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, and gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
77,411 vehicles 2005-02-08- Defect
- Certain trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans equipped with bosch hydro-boost brake assemblies, the hydraulic brake booster pressure accumulator may crack and separate from the hydro-boost assembly during normal operating conditions.
- Consequence
- If a separation occurred and the hood of the vehicle were open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. The presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort and a crash may occur without prior warning.
- Remedy
- Dealers will test the hydro-boost assembly for functional operation of the two-function valve. If the hydro-boost assembly fails the test, dealers will replace the assembly free of charge. The recall began on march 23, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc trucks at 1-866-996-9463 and hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Where 2005 sits in the model line
High risk for a 2005 — 68th riskiest of the 320 2005 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 21 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 66 and 2013 worst at 82, with 2005 itself at 72.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1998, 2008, 1997, 2007 and 1999 score lower than 2005 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 1999–2006 generation specifically, 1999 is the strongest year at 69 and 2006 the weakest at 77.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 1999-2006 generation, 1999 Chevrolet Silverado scores best at 69 and 2006 Chevrolet Silverado worst at 77.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other suspension problem from about 46, other powertrain problem from about 1k, other wheel or tire problem from about 6k and other body or interior problem from about 6k.
On a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other suspension problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
361 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 361 reports, 307 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 85% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado?
The most-reported failures are instrument cluster or gauge failure (32 reports, median 70,000 miles), other brake problem (32 reports, median 102,500 miles) and other electrical problem (25 reports, median 65,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2005 Chevrolet Silverado problems start?
Other suspension problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 200 miles and a quarter of reports before 46 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 53,000 miles.
Is the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado reliable?
It scores 72 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 68th riskiest of the 320 2005 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2005 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Chevrolet Silverado is best?
Within the 1999–2006 generation, 1999 scores best at 69 out of 100 and 2006 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
