2011 Toyota 4RUNNER: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER
On the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 60,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 45,000 miles. Overall it scores 75 out of 100, severe risk for a 2011.
Severe risk for a 2011 — 44th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. 182 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 33 named failure modes on the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER, and the three most-reported carry 54% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 89 reports, about 2.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 54k to 100,000 miles.
Other powertrain problem follows with 5 reports, median 10,000 miles.
Other body or interior problem follows with 5 reports, median 50,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (91), body (12) and steering (9).
At what mileage it happens
61 of the reports on the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 45,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 54% by 50,000 miles, 82% by 100,000 miles and 98% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 1 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 26% of the dated reports.
44% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 1 report came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.
- Line share of reports filed by that mileage
- Dashed the median reported mileage
How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 2 mention a crash, 1 a fire and 2 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.40, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000 and steering column or shaft failure at $600–$2,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
7% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER draws about 5.0 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 87th percentile of complaint rates among 2011 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 36,552 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2011 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall. Notified in may of the problem with the passenger side airbag. Have made several calls to the dealer legacy toyota, in tallahassee, florida on the status of receiving the replacement part. They cannot give a date on when the part will be received. I am in zone a which is supposed to have a high priority due to high temperatures and humidity. Significant propellant degradation may occur is projected at between 6-9 years. Your website says millions have been replaced so I wonder why I cannot get a replacement? Very frustrated because the vehicle cannot be operated.
Takata recall. I'm very concerned that the 2011 4runner I purchased in july is involved in the recall and there is no remedy to fix it at this time? What are my other options? I don't want to ride in a car that is unsafe to drive. I was not given all the correct information during my hunt for a new car and am unsure how to proceed. The car originated from florida and was transferred to me in colorado through carmax.
Other powertrain problem
Sudden rapid acceleration, entering a parking spot, both feet on brakes, still acceleration, put in neutral then park, still acceleration, had to back up, was in a bad position, never touched the gas thru this whole incident. Relined vehicle, still acceleration, put in park and turned it off. Toyota has had it since, 9-2-2011, today is 9-7-2011. What are my options. I pick up my grand kids all the time let alone on the road shopping, errands, etc. The floor mats were not the problem. *tr
Purchased vehicle new and the 5 speed automatic transmission operated smoothly. Around 9,300 miles the transmission started shifting gears harshly. The harshness is intermittent but happening more frequently. Also, while at highway speeds going downhill, the rpms bounce everywhere from 1500 rpms to 3000 rpms. Its almost as if the transmission is confused and doesn't know what gear to choose anymore. I also feel as if the brakes aren't releasing. When sitting at a red light going down hill, once I release my foot off the brake and before I accelerate, while coasting, I feel a "thud" in the rear end after about two rotations of the wheels. I drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic daily in pittsburgh and this shifting is awful - by far the worst transmission in a vehicle I have ever owned. I mentioned this issue during my last service visit at the toyota dealership and they said a technical service bulletin had not been issued yet. This needs addressed asap. This can't be the way toyota intended for this vehicle to operate - especially since it didn't always operate this way. *tr
Other body or interior problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 toyota 4runner sr5. The contact stated while driving various speeds and when the vehicle was not moving, he noticed that the lumbar support on the drivers seat would crackle and make noise whenever he moved. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 400 and the current mileage was approximately 1,500.
On 8 april 2013, there was a burning smell coming from the drivers seat. The heating switch to the heated seats would not turn off. Its smelled like something was burning and the drivers side seat was real hot like it was on fire. *tr this vehicle is only 18 months old and there should not be any problems with it. As to the question was there a fire.......there was no physical fire but, something was burning.. Can you please help. *tr
Recalls on the 2011 model year
NHTSA has issued 10 recall campaigns covering the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER, affecting an estimated 68,606 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module, structure:body:hood:hinge and attachments and engine and engine cooling:exhaust system:manifold/header/muf. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

How it ranks in the 2011 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
How 2011 compares with the other years
Severe risk for a 2011 — 44th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 29 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 52 and 2021 worst at 84, with 2011 itself at 75.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1998, 2001, 1997, 2002, 2004, 2003, 2005, 2025, 2007, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2014, 2013 and 2008 score lower than 2011 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2010–2016 generation specifically, 2014 is the strongest year at 68 and 2016 the weakest at 77.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2010-2016 generation, 2014 Toyota 4RUNNER scores best at 68 and 2016 Toyota 4RUNNER worst at 77.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: airbag inflator rupture from about 54k.
On a 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether airbag inflator rupture has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
Where these figures stop being useful
182 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 182 reports, 61 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 34% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (89 reports, median 60,000 miles), other powertrain problem (5 reports, median 10,000 miles) and other body or interior problem (5 reports, median 50,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER problems start?
Airbag inflator rupture is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 60,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 55,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 45,000 miles.
Is the 2011 Toyota 4RUNNER reliable?
It scores 75 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 44th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2011 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Toyota 4RUNNER is best?
Within the 2010–2016 generation, 2014 scores best at 68 out of 100 and 2016 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
