2014 GMC Sierra 1500: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500
On the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500, the failure owners report most often is other steering problem, and the reports cluster around 70,000 miles. The earliest to appear is headlight failure or clouding, reported by a median of 2,500 miles. Overall it scores 68 out of 100, high risk for a 2014.
High risk for a 2014 — 195th riskiest of the 270 2014 vehicles we can rate. 1,031 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 60 named failure modes on the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500, and the three most-reported carry 27% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other steering problem leads with 98 reports, about 0.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 52k to 87,500 miles.
Other lighting problem follows with 91 reports, usually reported between 100 to 35,000 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 88 reports, usually reported between 57k to 102,500 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into lighting (157), brakes (147) and steering (133).
At what mileage it happens
692 of the reports on the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 59,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 41% by 50,000 miles, 84% by 100,000 miles and 95% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 6 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 18% of the dated reports.
31% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: headlight failure or clouding around 2k, other lighting problem around 4k, control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure around 4k and other body or interior problem around 16k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 6 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 33 mention a crash, 6 a fire and 18 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.78, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other steering problem at $350–$2,400, other lighting problem at $120–$1,200, other brake problem at $300–$1,800 and other electrical problem at $250–$2,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
15% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 draws about 4.5 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 83rd percentile of complaint rates among 2014 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 230,228 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2014 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other steering problem
The part broke in half at low speed while I was driving in a construction area (my own driveway being installed) I hit something and the metal casing of the axle where it attaches to the front diff. Broke in half. I am 60 years old my wife was in the truck I was going so slow the speedometer was on 0. The dealer said the part was cracked by the impact. This is supposed to be a heavy duty 4x4 p/u, if I was going at 40 MPH off road what would have broke and what would have been the result? I think the metal of the casing was flawed and I am afraid to keep the truck. The dealer said this isn't a warranty issue I had to put a claim into my ins. This is not only a concern for safety but for finances as well. I paid $44,000. Cash for this truck, it is the sierra slt not only a 4x4 but it has 20" rims for added height. This was not hit hard enough to crack a steel casing. The truck is at a gmc/buick dealer in mount dora fl. They said it might take awhile to find the parts to fix it. I do not think gmc makes cheap trucks or dangerous trucks but I think after this gets fixed I will be looking into trading it. *tr
Truck vibrated new with 8 miles when we first drove it home. Pinpointed specific speeds and returned 9+ times to dealership over 7 months. Tires (twice), shocks and rear end were all replaced but did not stop vibration. 5 months from purchase we were followed by a neighbor and they saw my truck "dog tracking" (traveling sideways down the road). Dealer noted but would not follow at distance and speed required to witness the "dog tracking". Dealer told me they were clueless and come get the truck. Local auto repair shop followed me and said there is definitely a problem. Front center of wheel to back center of wheel measures 1/2 inch less on driver side than passenger side but dealer says that is not a good measurement because their computer says everything is fine. This truck vibrates and "dog tracks" and dealership refuses to make proper offer and has given up on repair attempts. I am presently seeking help from a different dealer.
Other lighting problem
Headlights are terrible. Very dim. Brights are no better. Installed aftermarket lighting (just under $400) just to be safe at night. . Made complaint with gm. They did not admit to knowledge of the problem and offered nothing to make situation right. I am extremely disappointed and will not buy another gmc with projection headlights. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the headlights on vehicle failed to illuminate properly. The headlights were dim and impaired the contacts vision. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 720.
Other brake problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 15 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed upon coming to a red light but failed to respond without warning. The contact was able to stop the vehicle after downshifting and depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake assist failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000. The VIN was not available.
Rounding a corner at low speed and the A/C compressor locked up and stalled the engine. I lost steering and brakes nearly hit a pole. Search for this issue and you will see that gm has a known issue on the 2014 A/C units that they are doing nothing about
Recalls on the 2014 model year
NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500, affecting an estimated 563,898 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover seat belts:front, electronic stability control (esc), service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum and equipment. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2014 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2014 — 195th riskiest of the 270 2014 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 30 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 60 and 2019 worst at 81, with 2014 itself at 68.
If the model year is negotiable, 1997, 1999, 2012 and 2013 score lower than 2014 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2014–2020 generation specifically, 2014 is the strongest year at 68 and 2019 the weakest at 81.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2014-2020 generation, 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 scores best at 68 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 worst at 81.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure from about 22, other lighting problem from about 100, headlight failure or clouding from about 100 and other suspension problem from about 504.
On a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
1,031 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 1,031 reports, 692 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 67% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500?
The most-reported failures are other steering problem (98 reports, median 70,000 miles), other lighting problem (91 reports, median 5,000 miles) and other brake problem (88 reports, median 77,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 problems start?
Headlight failure or clouding is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 2,500 miles and a quarter of reports before 100 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 59,000 miles.
Is the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
It scores 68 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 195th riskiest of the 270 2014 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2014 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the GMC Sierra 1500 is best?
Within the 2014–2020 generation, 2014 scores best at 68 out of 100 and 2019 worst at 81. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
