2015 GMC Sierra 1500: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500
On the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, the failure owners report most often is other brake problem, and the reports cluster around 57,000 miles. The earliest to appear is headlight failure or clouding, reported by a median of 1,000 miles. Overall it scores 71 out of 100, high risk for a 2015.
High risk for a 2015 — 153rd riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. 928 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 63 named failure modes on the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, and the three most-reported carry 30% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other brake problem leads with 158 reports, about 1.1 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 44k to 75,000 miles.
Other steering problem follows with 62 reports, usually reported between 33k to 75,000 miles.
Other electrical problem follows with 61 reports, usually reported between 40k to 67,500 miles. 3 of those reports mention a fire.
By system, the reports fall mostly into brakes (221), lighting (94) and transmission (87).
When these failures get reported
587 of the reports on the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 46,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 54% by 50,000 miles, 92% by 100,000 miles and 99% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 19% of the dated reports.
37% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.
In the order they tend to show up: headlight failure or clouding around 1k, other lighting problem around 1k, other suspension problem around 8k and other wheel or tire problem around 15k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 2 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 27 mention a crash, 14 a fire and 5 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.86, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other brake problem at $300–$1,800, other steering problem at $350–$2,400, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000 and other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
21% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 draws about 6.2 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 86th percentile of complaint rates among 2015 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 149,205 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2015 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other brake problem
On 2/5/2017 while turning unto my street the steering wheel locked and I could not move my truck from hitting a block wall. I also tried breaking but the car did not stop in time to not hit the wall. I was driving slowly (20 MPH) because I was in a neighborhood and me and my family were all wearing seatbelts so no one was seriously injured. The airbags did not deploy at all. And I also bent the steering wheel in half trying to move it. I am attaching a picture of the steering wheel itself and the vehicle is currently at caliber collisions for the repairs. I went to the gm dealer and they said they would run diagnostics after the truck comes out of the shop.
Backing boat down boat ramp (not a steep ramp) in trailer mode, braking did not stop vehicle. Pumped pedal several times, used lots of force on pedal. Because of slow speed and increased effort, the vehicle did stop. Pulled forward and repeated at slower reverse speed and same poor braking. Dry conditions, brakes dry, did not put rear wheels in water. Have not had a repeated event. Dealer indicated that service bulletin pit5361b applies, but because of mileage it is not warranty. This should be a recall.
Other steering problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 2 MPH, the steering wheel fractured from the vehicle. As a result, the contact crashed into a concrete post and the air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained left hand injuries that did not require medical attention. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed away from the crash scene to a dealer who diagnosed that the connection point at steering wheel column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,000.
I am in receipt of the paperwork concerning the above claimed for my vehicle. The paperwork in my possession clearly states that farmers insurance has made me aware that my vehicle 'has been determined to be a total loss'. I am concerned about these findings since it seemed my vehicle only suffered minor damages to the exterior only. Airbags where not deployed nor any windows shattered. I am also in receipt of the paperwork concerning my claim and determining I am 51% at fault towards the accident. I clearly gave my side of the story to the police office that my steering wheel had locked and I was unable to maneuver the vehicle. I was not under the influence of any drugs so I feel mechanical failure should be assessed. Supplemental information was also sent to me where it clearly states recall notices for my vehicle. Recall notice NHTSA campaign id # 14v719000, dated by the manufacturer november 10, 2014 states a recall notice naming the steering as the component needing to be replaced. I never received any information from the manufacturer gmc/chevrolet concerning this matter. Upon review of this letter, please also take into…
Other electrical problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 55 MPH, the defroster stopped working and the air conditioner was blowing out hot air. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 46,000.
Has had an issue with accessories flashing off and back on. Reported it to a gmc dealer and they were unable to duplicate but said that the battery was bad and most likely what was causing it. It did fine for a while then began doing it again. This time however it caused a loss in power steering and I ended up in the ditch. Later it did it in a parking lot and was able to video tape it. Took it to the dealer and showed them the video. They were unable to duplicate for 4 days while I was paying for a rental because mine wasn't safe to drive. On the fourth day I provided them with a service bulletin I found that addressed the issue as being a fluctuation in power and for them to check the cables and do a drop load test. They did and it failed. I then had to pay 376.00 to replace them plus having to pay for a rental after asking for a loaner. This is a problem a lot of people are having. Just a quick google search makes that plain. Gm isn't wanting to admit it. I have the video but I don't think it will allow me to upload it to the form.
Recalls on the 2015 model year
NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, affecting an estimated 429,366 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:side/window:curtain:inflator, seat belts:front and electronic stability control (esc). Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

SEAT BELTS
895,232 vehicles 2016-04-12- Defect
- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.
- Consequence
- If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.
Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.
How it ranks in the 2015 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Where 2015 sits in the model line
High risk for a 2015 — 153rd riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 30 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 60 and 2019 worst at 81, with 2015 itself at 71.
If the model year is negotiable, 1997, 1999, 2012, 2013, 2010, 1998 and 2001 score lower than 2015 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2014–2020 generation specifically, 2014 is the strongest year at 68 and 2019 the weakest at 81.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2014-2020 generation, 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 scores best at 68 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 worst at 81.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other lighting problem from about 125, headlight failure or clouding from about 200, complete transmission failure from about 1k and other visibility problem from about 2k.
On a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other lighting problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
Where these figures stop being useful
928 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 928 reports, 587 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 63% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500?
The most-reported failures are other brake problem (158 reports, median 57,000 miles), other steering problem (62 reports, median 62,500 miles) and other electrical problem (61 reports, median 47,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 problems start?
Headlight failure or clouding is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 1,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 200 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 46,000 miles.
Is the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
It scores 71 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 153rd riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2015 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the GMC Sierra 1500 is best?
Within the 2014–2020 generation, 2014 scores best at 68 out of 100 and 2019 worst at 81. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
