2005 Ford Ranger: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2005 Ford Ranger
On the 2005 Ford Ranger, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, with 75 reports on file. The earliest to appear is other wheel or tire problem, reported by a median of 30,000 miles. Overall it scores 67 out of 100, high risk for a 2005.
High risk for a 2005 — 185th riskiest of the 320 2005 vehicles we can rate. 353 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 41 named failure modes on the 2005 Ford Ranger, and the three most-reported carry 35% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 75 reports and about 0.6 per 1,000 vehicles.
Other fuel system problem follows with 26 reports, usually reported between 12k to 60,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.
Other body or interior problem follows with 24 reports, usually reported between 50k to 125,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (83), fuel (58) and body (33).
At what mileage it happens
206 of the reports on the 2005 Ford Ranger came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 59,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 34% by 50,000 miles, 78% by 100,000 miles and 92% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 11 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 50,000 and 60,000 miles, which alone holds 19% of the dated reports.
26% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other wheel or tire problem around 31k, other fuel system problem around 51k, fuel pump failure around 51k and other electrical problem around 54k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 11 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 18 mention a crash, 5 a fire and 13 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.97, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other fuel system problem at $300–$2,200, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000 and fuel pump failure at $600–$2,600. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
9% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2005 Ford Ranger draws about 2.9 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 77th percentile of complaint rates among 2005 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 120,775 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2005 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall I have been waiting for months to receive the "interim" replacement for my driver's side airbag, and I have felt unsafe in driving my vehicle since I first received notice of the takata airbag inflator. I've brought my truck (2005 ford ranger) into my local ford dealership 3 separate times, and each time they've returned it to me without fixing anything because the part for the interim replacement has been on backorder. This is in houston, tx, so right in the middle of the priority region due to extremely high humidity. I have tried every possible avenue to get a loaner vehicle, by calling ford customer care and my local ford dealership (sterling mccall ford in houston, tx). I know that honda is issuing loaner vehicles, despite having many more models affected by this recall. It is clear that honda cares more about its customers' safety than ford, because ford refuses to issue loaner vehicles for this recall. I refuse to drive my truck or allow my wife to drive my truck until the problem is fixed. This leaves me without a vehicle to drive. I urge NHTSA to put pressure on ford to provide loaner vehicles, as honda has…
"takata recall" I was notified in february, 2016 (10 months ago) of recall notice 16s03 / NHTSA recall 16v-036. Today is dec. 10, 2016. My life has been in danger for 10 months due to a lack of action as promised. Your immediate attention to this matter is critical. [xxx]. Phone [xxx]. Email: [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Other fuel system problem
3 times going down the road the truck died and had to be towed. All 3 times was the inertia switch. The other time they replaced part of the transmission. All this on a new truck I've had for 6 weeks. The truck isn't safe. Go out into heavy interstate traffic going 65 and shut your vehicle off. It isn't good. They want me to try it again. I can't put my family or myself in that position again.
Dt: 2005 ford ranger edge supercab while driving on dirt road about 25 miles per hour, turning left onto my street the engine just shut off. A friend of mine that is a mechanic said that this was a problem with fuel inertia switch. The consumer knows that this problem has happened to at least 2 other people. The vehicle would not restart back. The vehicle was towed back to the consumer's house. We read the owners manual. The reset switch for the fuel inertia switch was pushed and then car started back up. The consumer drove the car for about a half hour and this problem did not occur again. *nm
Other body or interior problem
Ford decided to not include rear inner wheel well splash shields in the pick-up beds for the 2005 model year, the rear wheels now 'inject' road liquids into the bed through openings in the bed seam under the cap rail. If a person has a shell or cover on the bed any contents live or not are exposed to whatever is splashed in seattle because of the rain, I grow mold if I use a shell. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 2 MPH in reverse, the vehicle nearly struck a pedestrian due to the seat backs of both the driver and passenger seats blocking out most of the visibility through the rear window. A service dealer was consulted, who instructed the contact to contact the manufacturer.
Recalls on the 2005 model year
NHTSA has issued 11 recall campaigns covering the 2005 Ford Ranger, affecting an estimated 619,149 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module and air bags:frontal. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
How 2005 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2005 — 185th riskiest of the 320 2005 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 23 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 58 and 2023 worst at 81, with 2005 itself at 67.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 score lower than 2005 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2004–2011 generation specifically, 2005 is the strongest year at 67 and 2009 the weakest at 74.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2004-2011 generation, 2005 Ford Ranger scores best at 67 and 2009 Ford Ranger worst at 74.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: fuel pump failure from about 8k, other fuel system problem from about 12k, other wheel or tire problem from about 30k and other electrical problem from about 48k.
On a 2005 Ford Ranger with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether fuel pump failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
What this page cannot tell you
353 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 353 reports, 206 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 58% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2005 Ford Ranger?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (75 reports, median 90,000 miles), other fuel system problem (26 reports, median 50,000 miles) and other body or interior problem (24 reports, median 80,000 miles).
