2010 Ford Ranger: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2010 Ford Ranger
On the 2010 Ford Ranger, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 60,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 45,000 miles. Overall it scores 73 out of 100, high risk for a 2010.
High risk for a 2010 — 89th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. 171 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 23 named failure modes on the 2010 Ford Ranger, and the three most-reported carry 60% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 91 reports, about 1.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 39k to 110,000 miles.
Other body or interior problem follows with 6 reports, median 20,000 miles.
Other engine problem follows with 5 reports, median 30,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (93), body (7) and engine (5).
When these failures get reported
57 of the reports on the 2010 Ford Ranger came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 45,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 51% by 50,000 miles, 81% by 100,000 miles and 95% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 23% of the dated reports.
40% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 4 mention a crash and 3 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.39, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000, other engine problem at $300–$4,000 and parking brake failure at $250–$1,300. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
5% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2010 Ford Ranger draws about 2.6 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 85th percentile of complaint rates among 2010 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 65,066 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2010 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Takata recall my wife and I are forced to use separate vehicles since june 1, 2016. If f my wife rides in passenger seat she could be killed . This is at great cost in mileage and gasoline.
Takata recall. I was notified of the recall effective june 2016 and am still waiting for action by ford after several calls by me for updates on status of repair. Updated 8/16/2017*js
Other body or interior problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford ranger. The contact was driving approximately 55 MPH and was having difficulty seeing the roadway over the steering wheel because he was not positioned high enough. He stated that the manufacturer should elevate the seat cushion higher for smaller statured consumers. The dealer replaced the seat cushion yet the contact still was unable to adequately see the roadway. The front headrest was also designed at a very high position. In addition, the contact stated that the clock illumination was not visible. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 400.
Due to a recent road hazard a tire went flat, when attempting to retrieve the spare, it could not be removed because the cable holding it up rusted solid. Additionally, the bed is also rusting to the extent where holes go through to the road(see pic). The dealer took pictures and sent them to ford who in turn said they will take no action because the vehicle is six years old. My vehicle was purchased new, it has 44,000 miles on it and is well taken care of(see pic). I do not understand why it is rusting to the point where some parts (spare tire retracter) have become usless. I will think long and hard before purchasing another ford. Ford - fix or repair daily
Other engine problem
2010 ford ranger lst 4 cylinder. There is a sever vibration at 2000 rpms and the engine runs rough at idle. 850 rpms on the tach. The vibration is in the steering and throughout the whole truck. I have had the truck back to the dealer, but the service manager said it was just the nature of the beast...when on extended trips the vibration is felt in your hands, feet, legs and the seat of your pants. Could this be in the engine (out of balance) or exhaust, suspension or what??? I consider this a safety hazard. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford ranger. The contact stated that the check engine indicator illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v384000 (air bags); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cylinder head module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (ronnie watkins ford inc, 101 george wallace dr, gadsden, al 35903) and was informed that the part was not available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 38,790. Parts distribution disconnect.
Recalls on the 2010 model year
NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2010 Ford Ranger, affecting an estimated 194,390 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

- Ford is recalling certain model year 2010 ranger vehicles manufactured from june 8, 2009 through february 2, 2010 equipped with manual transmission. It is possible for the parking brake cable to become disconnected from the right rear actuator during cold weather. This may occur when the parking brake is released if wet parking brake shoes have frozen in the applied position. If the right rear parking brake cable becomes disconnected, the pedal will have extended travel and may not fully apply the parking brake.
- Consequence
- A manual transmission vehicle parked in neutral without a fully applied parking brake may have unintended movement which may cause a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a revised right rear parking brake actuator to prevent cable disconnection free of charge. The safety recall began on may 21, 2010. Owners may contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
How 2010 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2010 — 89th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 23 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 58 and 2023 worst at 81, with 2010 itself at 73.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2025, 2004 and 2008 score lower than 2010 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2004–2011 generation specifically, 2005 is the strongest year at 67 and 2009 the weakest at 74.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2004-2011 generation, 2005 Ford Ranger scores best at 67 and 2009 Ford Ranger worst at 74.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: airbag inflator rupture from about 39k.
On a 2010 Ford Ranger with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether airbag inflator rupture has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
What this page cannot tell you
171 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 171 reports, 57 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 33% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2010 Ford Ranger?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (91 reports, median 60,000 miles), other body or interior problem (6 reports, median 20,000 miles) and other engine problem (5 reports, median 30,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2010 Ford Ranger problems start?
Airbag inflator rupture is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 60,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 40,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 45,000 miles.
Is the 2010 Ford Ranger reliable?
It scores 73 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 89th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2010 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Ford Ranger is best?
Within the 2004–2011 generation, 2005 scores best at 67 out of 100 and 2009 worst at 74. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
