2009 Dodge Grand Caravan: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan
On the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, the failure owners report most often is other electrical problem, and the reports cluster around 89,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other brake problem, reported by a median of 30,000 miles. Overall it scores 68 out of 100, high risk for a 2009.
High risk for a 2009 — 195th riskiest of the 295 2009 vehicles we can rate. 798 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 53 named failure modes on the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, and the three most-reported carry 44% of everything filed.
Other electrical problem leads with 274 reports, about 3.0 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 64k to 115,000 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 42 reports, usually reported between 20k to 62,500 miles.
Ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure follows with 38 reports, usually reported between 57k to 85,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into electrical (321), engine (84) and wheels (60).
The mileage the reports cluster at
483 of the reports on the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 76,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 27% by 50,000 miles, 72% by 100,000 miles and 91% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 7 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 70,000 and 80,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.
19% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other brake problem around 31k, other wheel or tire problem around 47k, tire pressure monitor failure around 57k and other powertrain problem around 66k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 7 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

- Dashed the median reported mileage
How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 13 mention a crash, 6 a fire and 8 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.06, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other brake problem at $300–$1,800, ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure at $250–$1,500 and no-start or intermittent start failure at $200–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
14% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan draws about 8.8 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 91st percentile of complaint rates among 2009 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 90,338 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2009 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other electrical problem
2009 d gr caravan purchased new, have had to have front brakes rotors , shaved , then brakes & rotors replaced, then again rear rotors shaved at 22,000 miles. There definitely is an issue with the brakes on this vehicle. And needs to be address by dodge. Also had electrical problems and van cut off on me once going 45 MPH , then approx 25 MPH, then again at a stop. This is the 1st new car I have ever purchased, not an easy thing for me as I only make $25,000 a yr and I am so frustrated that I promise I will only buy used from now on, if I am going to pay nearly $30,000 for a vehicle , I don't expect to have to have it in the shop 4 + times and to have to shell out a couple hundred dollars every 6 months on it. *kb
Our van has stalled numerous times while in motion over the past 2 weeks. There is no early warning when it will happen. It has happened in parking lots at 5 MPH and also at at highway speeds. When it stalls, all electrical components still work, but the power steering and power brakes no longer work. It has never failed to restart. I have seen on NHTSA's website that there is a recall on the same vehicles made between aug 2009 and june 2010, but not my van with a build date of jan 26, 2009. The problem on the recall is that the win module no longer holds the key in the run position, it falls to on and the vehicle stalls. I also see numerous complaints on NHTSA's website for pre aug 2009 dodge grand caravans built prior to aug 2009, so I am not the only one experiencing the issue. The recall needs to be expanded. *tr
Other brake problem
2008 dodge caravan. My wife complained about noise from brakes. Brought in for a diagnosis and it needs both front and rear brake pads and rotors. The car has 21,000 miles, 90 percent on the highway. After research on the internet, this is a common complaint and chrysler is refusing to do anything about the accelerated wear on the pads and rotors. Apparently the subpar materials that are used are over heating causing this wear. This is totally unacceptable. Chrysler needs to address this and issue a recall. We were lucky to get 21,000 mi. From reading many other complaints, most need replacing around the 12,000 mile mark. *tr
Had to replace pads and rotors on 2009 dodge grand caravan. Total mileage on vehicle was 23,500 miles. Firestone, where work was done, told me that they had used cheap parts during manufacture. Spoke to an acquaintance who also has the same type of vehicle and he had to replace his pads and rotors also at about the same mileage. Think this is a safety issue because of people continuing to drive because they expect 30k or more just out of the pads and the fact that this has happened to 2 out 2 owners of dodge caravans. *tr
Ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure
Vehicle while both driving on road and in park stalls. It givens no notice or warning that this is going to happen. At least 10 times I have noticed that the ignition switch has "moved" from the "run" position to "accessory," by itself. I have taken it to 3 different dealers but each has said they couldn't find an issue no codes have been coming up in the computer. I even had it stall in the dealer when I picked it up yet they have not done anything to fix the problem. When it stalls the steering wheel is extremely hard to move. I have 3 small children in the car when it stalls on main roads it is very frightening and dangerous trying to control the car, put it into neutral or park and get it to start or try to get to a safe place to restart it! I have contacted chrysler-dodge customer service, service managers etc all to no avail. I asked the dealer service managers if there was any recall and they told me there wasn't any....I see on NHTSA website there is one but it is for 2010 and up but the 2009 vehicles also have the same stall problem! Report receipt date: mar 01, 2011 NHTSA campaign number: 11v139000 component(s)…

Recalls on the 2009 model year
NHTSA has issued 7 recall campaigns covering the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, affecting an estimated 270,807 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover steering: steering wheel/handle bar, air bags:frontal, electrical system:ignition:switch and suspension:rear:axle:non-powered axle assembly. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2009 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
How 2009 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2009 — 195th riskiest of the 295 2009 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 25 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2004 comes out best at 58 and 2020 worst at 80, with 2009 itself at 68.
If the model year is negotiable, 2004 and 2001 score lower than 2009 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2008–2014 generation specifically, 2013 is the strongest year at 67 and 2010 the weakest at 70.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2008-2014 generation, 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan scores best at 67 and 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan worst at 70.
What the numbers say to check
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other brake problem from about 20k, other speed control problem from about 28k, tire pressure monitor failure from about 29k and other wheel or tire problem from about 37k.
On a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other brake problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
Where these figures stop being useful
798 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 798 reports, 483 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 61% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
