2000 Dodge Grand Caravan: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

On the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan, the failure owners report most often is other powertrain problem, and the reports cluster around 52,500 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 80,000 miles. Overall it scores 69 out of 100, high risk for a 2000.

High risk for a 2000 — 94th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. 558 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 60 named failure modes on the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan, and the three most-reported carry 34% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Other powertrain problem leads with 64 reports, about 1.0 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 42k to 70,000 miles.

Strut, shock or spring failure follows with 63 reports, usually reported between 75k to 120,000 miles.

Other engine problem follows with 61 reports, usually reported between 56k to 120,000 miles. 5 of those reports mention a fire.

By system, the reports fall mostly into transmission (88), suspension (77) and engine (71).

At what mileage it happens

316 of the reports on the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 80,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 26% by 50,000 miles, 64% by 100,000 miles and 86% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 13 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, which alone holds 9% of the dated reports.

15% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: other powertrain problem around 52k, complete transmission failure around 54k, other electrical problem around 65k and other engine problem around 83k.

How bad it is when it goes

Across the named modes, 24 mention a crash, 15 a fire, 13 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.31, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, strut, shock or spring failure at $500–$2,000, other engine problem at $300–$4,000 and other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

34% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan draws about 8.8 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 86th percentile of complaint rates among 2000 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 63,689 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2000 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Strut, shock or spring failure

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The front left strut tower rusted, almost completely through. Had I not noticed this when checking the oil, the strut could have busted through the tower. I took the vehicle to two body shops, both of which told me that they replace a lot of these. This is a structural part of the van, not a fender or a door. The estimate for repairs is over $1200. In october of 2002, there was a service bulletin issued regarding strut tower corrosion.*ak

Dt: dodge minivan 2000 grand caravan. Consumer complained about the strut platform where the strut meats part of the body. Also, called strut seating. The strut seating, or platform rusted prematurely. Consumer took vehicle to garage last week, on july 7, 2005, and mechanic informed her that the rust was there, and this made vehicle unsafe. Mechanic said that he had never seen rust on this new vehicle. Consumer also contacted dealer, and dealer said that they had been getting complaints on this matter. Dealer was gilberts chrysler dodge. She then contacted manufacturer, and was told that there was no recall and nothing could be done until there were enough complaints filed. Consumer visited other dealers to look at similar vehicles and found that this problem existed in the other dodge vehicles, but not other manufactured vehicles.*ak

Other engine problem

Year 2000 dodge grand caravan - serpentine belt tensioner failed resulting in shredded belt and towing. Van had only approximately 47,500 miles. Repaired at goodyear for approx. $200 (including new belt) who indicated this is a common problem such that the dodge dealer had more than 15 in stock. Fortunately this occurred near a police station where my wife got assistance (since steering, etc. Had no power and not on the highway or rush hour traffic which would have been hazardous. I have also read other complaints from owners with this same issue. *ak

Year 2000 dodge grand caravan rejected in emissions testing with on-board computer. Van computer cannot communicate with emissions testing computer. Emissions center noted chrysler service bulletin 18-10-00 and suggested dealer service for "re-flashing" at owner expense. I had attempted to be proactive before testing upon hearing of other complaints on same issue by contacting chrysler and alexander dodge (dealer). Chrysler initially denied knowledge of any emissions problems. After the dealer confirmed a problem and stated there is only a 50/50 chance the van will pass emissions and after I obtained the service bulletin #, only then did chrysler say there was an issue but they refused to tell me about it unless I provided them with a visa or mastercard number. I am amazed that chrysler is not standing by their product or customers. They want me to pay them so they can tell me about their problem with their vehicle and then they want me to pay them to fix their problem. If chrysler knows there is a problem, the dealer knows there is a problem, and customers cannot get emissions testing or renew vehicle tags, then what can be done…

Recalls on the 2000 model year

NHTSA has issued 8 recall campaigns covering the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan, affecting an estimated 122,585 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover seats, visibility:glass, side/rear, fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump and air bags. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2000 field

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2000 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

High risk for a 2000 — 94th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 25 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2004 comes out best at 58 and 2020 worst at 80, with 2000 itself at 69.

If the model year is negotiable, 2004, 2001, 1999 and 2005 score lower than 2000 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 1996–2004 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 58 and 2002 the weakest at 70.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 1996-2004 generation, 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan scores best at 58 and 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan worst at 70.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other steering problem from about 30k, complete transmission failure from about 42k, other powertrain problem from about 42k and other electrical problem from about 52k.

On a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other steering problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

What this page cannot tell you

558 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 558 reports, 316 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 57% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan?

The most-reported failures are other powertrain problem (64 reports, median 52,500 miles), strut, shock or spring failure (63 reports, median 92,500 miles) and other engine problem (61 reports, median 82,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan problems start?

Other powertrain problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 52,500 miles and a quarter of reports before 42,500 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 80,000 miles.

Is the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan reliable?

It scores 69 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 94th riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2000 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Dodge Grand Caravan is best?
