2003 Toyota Corolla: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2003 Toyota Corolla
On the 2003 Toyota Corolla, the failure owners report most often is other engine problem, and the reports cluster around 30,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other wheel or tire problem, reported by a median of 10,000 miles. Overall it scores 71 out of 100, high risk for a 2003.
High risk for a 2003 — 111th riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. 860 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 54 named failure modes on the 2003 Toyota Corolla, and the three most-reported carry 22% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other engine problem leads with 83 reports, about 0.6 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 1k to 102,500 miles.
Other speed control problem follows with 60 reports, usually reported between 22k to 105,000 miles.
Airbag inflator rupture follows with 46 reports, usually reported between 94k to 295,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (126), engine (95) and adas (78).
When these failures get reported
463 of the reports on the 2003 Toyota Corolla came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 85,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 35% by 50,000 miles, 58% by 100,000 miles and 79% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 37 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 16% of the dated reports.
28% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other wheel or tire problem around 9k, cruise control failure around 28k, other engine problem around 30k and other body or interior problem around 39k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 37 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 107 mention a crash, 10 a fire, 50 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.24, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other speed control problem at $250–$2,000, airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0 and other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
19% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2003 Toyota Corolla draws about 5.8 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 83rd percentile of complaint rates among 2003 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 147,951 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2003 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other engine problem
Purchased 2003 toyota corolla in september of 2002. Car is emitting a very noticeable sulfur odor especially when coming to a stop at traffic lights after driving at highway speeds. Contacted dealer and was told the problem is the gasoline I purchase. I pointed out that I have a 2002 toyota camry that I purchased in april of 2002, that I fill both cars with the same gasoline, and that I have never experienced any such problem with the camry. Again I was told the problem is with the gasoline. The internet abounds with discussion groups where people all over the country are reporting the same problem as I am experiencing.
Strong sulfur odor from exhast. Service department has said it cannot be repaired, and blames bad gas. Did say toyota has acknowledged the problem. I have tested several brands and grades of gas with no improvements. Directly contacted toyota, who referred me back to the dealer, who said it cannot be fixed. Said car computer is functioning normally.
Other speed control problem
When the vehicle came to a complete stop, the accelerator pedal became stuck in the idle position. The dealer inspected the vehicle three times and was unable to duplicate or correct the problem. *ak *scc *jb
The consumer was driving 20 MPH when the driver applied the brakes. The pedal had gone to the floor and the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but they have not been able to identify the problem. *ak the consumer turned the vehicle very slowly and heard a sharp noise and the vehicle begun to shake. The motor had gone wild. The brakes had gone out. The consumer tried to shut off the ignition and tried to place in neutral, then park, but nothing happened and the vehicle continued to run with no control. The vehicle ran into a tree. The driver sustained injuries. *scc *nlm
Airbag inflator rupture
Toyota airbags were identified as a safety hazard when bags deploy they could release metal shrapnel. The problem identified in 2014 and toyota cannot get parts to fix the problem. They recommend no one travel in the front passenger seat of the car until the fix can be made. Not using the front seat ( 25% of the capacity of the vehicle ) for over a year ( and no known date for a fix so this could go for several years ) is not acceptable. I also suggested the disconnect the airbag so I could use the seat with the seat belt and the dealer would not do. ( mark motors, stevens point, wi ). This is an unacceptable response as I may as well park the car if 25% of seating capacity cannot be used due to toyota's negligence. They should have to pay owners if they cannot fix their problem within a reasonable period ( I would suggest 1 month at most ). *tr
Tl* takata recall.the contact owns a 2003 toyota corolla. While driving various speeds, the air bag warning indicator and the check engine light remained illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vcu needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v043000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Recalls on the 2003 model year
NHTSA has issued 13 recall campaigns covering the 2003 Toyota Corolla, affecting an estimated 528,565 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module and air bags. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

How it ranks in the 2003 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2003 — 111th riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 31 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 62 and 2010 worst at 82, with 2003 itself at 71.
If the model year is negotiable, 1997 scores lower than 2003 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2003–2008 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 69 and 2007 the weakest at 72.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2003-2008 generation, 2004 Toyota Corolla scores best at 69 and 2007 Toyota Corolla worst at 72.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: catalytic converter failure from about 100, other engine problem from about 1k, other wheel or tire problem from about 3k and other electrical problem from about 11k.
On a 2003 Toyota Corolla with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether catalytic converter failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
What this page cannot tell you
860 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 860 reports, 463 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 54% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
