2012 Lincoln Mkz: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2012 Lincoln Mkz
On the 2012 Lincoln Mkz, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 45,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 52,500 miles. Overall it scores 69 out of 100, high risk for a 2012.
High risk for a 2012 — 180th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. 176 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 27 named failure modes on the 2012 Lincoln Mkz, and the three most-reported carry 39% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 45 reports, about 0.7 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 38k to 55,000 miles.
Other steering problem follows with 12 reports, usually reported between 46k to 140,000 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 11 reports, usually reported between 39k to 105,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (50), brakes (22) and steering (17).
The mileage the reports cluster at
96 of the reports on the 2012 Lincoln Mkz came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 52,500 miles.
Cumulatively, 45% by 50,000 miles, 77% by 100,000 miles and 94% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 4 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 50,000 and 60,000 miles, which alone holds 13% of the dated reports.
31% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: airbag inflator rupture around 46k, other brake problem around 73k and other steering problem around 80k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 4 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 13 mention a crash, 5 a fire and 9 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.40, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other steering problem at $350–$2,400, other brake problem at $300–$1,800 and other electrical problem at $250–$2,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
6% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2012 Lincoln Mkz draws about 2.7 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 81st percentile of complaint rates among 2012 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 65,066 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2012 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall. The first recall notice was in march 2017, no parts available for replacing the airbag, a second notice came to me in oct. 26, 2017. The dealers still do not have replacement parts. I have not had a problem with the airbag but I'd feel safer if the airbag was replaced !!!
"takata recall" the airbag inflators part for my vehicle not available from manufacture after receiving notices to have parts replaced at dealership. Consumer safety at high risk. "takata recall" airbag inflators part not available to be replaced after receiving several notices from manufacturer. Consumer safety at risk. Help!!!!!!!
Other steering problem
On turning right power steering shuts off and only had manual steering control until wheels were straightened and the power steering returned. This only happens on turning right. Went to dealer complaint is on file , dealer said nothing wrong new cars power steering different than previous cars. This is terrible and if not fixed I am going to trade in this car. It is the worst steering auto I ever had. I am 83 and I have had a lot of cars in my lifetime from different auto companies but none ever had this steering problem.. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 lincoln mkz. While driving approximately 40 MPH, the steering wheel seized without warning and excessive force was required. As a result of the failure, the vehicle drove onto a curb and fractured the rims and tires. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not diagnose the failure. The tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 29,000.
Other brake problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 lincoln mkz. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle shook and went into limp mode. The contact also stated that while making a turn at an unknown speed, the vehicle accelerated independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they could not duplicate the cause of failure. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 1,000. Tyhe consumer stated the vehicle idles rough at stand still. It surges when accelerating from an almost braking stop while driving. The garage door home ling fails at times. Brake pedal makes a clunking noise when released. Headlines sags in the front of rear window. Updated 06/17/2013 *js
Traveling n on 95 just beyond richmond va on 11/26/16 traffic came to a stop and I was attentive and recognized the need to brake quickly. The car initially slowed but did not respond further to applying brakes. I rear ended a jeep grand cherokee. Major damage to my car - minimal to the jeep. Airbags did not deploy. I am still confused by what happened - I had time to stop the vehicle but it did not respond. I am 60 years old and a long time city commuter along with having traveled this route regularly since 1979. I cannot help but conclude there was some type of brake malfunction with my 2012 lincoln mkz. *tr
Recalls on the 2012 model year
NHTSA has issued 6 recall campaigns covering the 2012 Lincoln Mkz, affecting an estimated 145,576 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2012 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2012 — 180th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 13 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2018 comes out best at 64 and 2019 worst at 73, with 2012 itself at 69.
If the model year is negotiable, 2018, 2007, 2008 and 2014 score lower than 2012 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2006–2012 generation specifically, 2007 is the strongest year at 64 and 2010 the weakest at 70.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2006-2012 generation, 2007 Lincoln Mkz scores best at 64 and 2010 Lincoln Mkz worst at 70.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: airbag inflator rupture from about 38k, other brake problem from about 39k and other steering problem from about 46k.
On a 2012 Lincoln Mkz with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether airbag inflator rupture has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
176 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 176 reports, 96 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 55% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2012 Lincoln Mkz?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (45 reports, median 45,000 miles), other steering problem (12 reports, median 80,000 miles) and other brake problem (11 reports, median 75,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2012 Lincoln Mkz problems start?
Airbag inflator rupture is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 45,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 40,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 52,500 miles.
Is the 2012 Lincoln Mkz reliable?
It scores 69 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 180th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2012 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Lincoln Mkz is best?
Within the 2006–2012 generation, 2007 scores best at 64 out of 100 and 2010 worst at 70. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
