2011 Lincoln Mkz: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2011 Lincoln Mkz
On the 2011 Lincoln Mkz, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 50,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 67,000 miles. Overall it scores 70 out of 100, high risk for a 2011.
High risk for a 2011 — 154th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. 181 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 37 named failure modes on the 2011 Lincoln Mkz, and the three most-reported carry 39% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 51 reports, about 0.8 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 45k to 70,000 miles.
Other body or interior problem follows with 11 reports, median 55,000 miles. 3 of those reports mention a fire.
Other steering problem follows with 9 reports, usually reported between 34k to 75,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (57), body (20) and steering (16).
When these failures get reported
102 of the reports on the 2011 Lincoln Mkz came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 67,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 37% by 50,000 miles and 75% by 100,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 20,000 and 30,000 miles, which alone holds 12% of the dated reports.
25% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 19 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 7 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.74, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000, other steering problem at $350–$2,400 and water pump failure at $500–$2,200. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
9% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2011 Lincoln Mkz draws about 2.8 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 83rd percentile of complaint rates among 2011 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 65,066 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2011 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall - called dealer (robinson brothers lincoln baton rouge, louisiana) and they told me they did not have the parts at this time and that I should wait for another letter.
Takata recall I have got notice that the passenger airbag is dangerously defective and must be replaced., and I should "contact your nearest dealership immediately to schedule a free repair". My local dealer (santa monica ford) does not have the parts, and can not say when they will be available. The notice from tk holdings implies that all repairs should be completed by 27 december. When will the parts be available?
Other body or interior problem
I was the driver; the accident occured day;sunny around noon;I was in a library parking lot pulling into a parking space -slowly suddenly , the car leapt forward the and "something" seemed to be under the accelerator- it leapt forward I could lt not make the car stop; what stopped the car wasae concrete light post which exploded. If I had not hit the post the car would have gone in to a lake and I might have drowned. I was alone the car - and I had about $10,000 damage to my car. I believe the floor mat shifted and was under the accelerator and I am very distressed. Also -the airbags did not deploy. This needs to be addresssed- I contacted ford but they said I as not affected by the massive previous recall of floor mats., this floormat issue needs to be addressed or someone will die. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 lincoln mkz. While the vehicle was parked, the driver side door unlatched and would not close until after several attempts. The failure recurred on two other occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v246000 (latches/locks/linkages). The approximate failure mileage was 54,000.
Other steering problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 lincoln mkz. The contact stated that the vehicle drifted to the left abnormally. The contact stated that the failure would occur most frequently when traveling at highway speeds of 60 MPH and above. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who was unable to locate a failure within the steering. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 4,000 and the failure mileage was 359. Updated 06/0611 *bf updated 1/24/2012 *ln *tr
I drive a 2011 lincoln mkz and today I had a bit of a problem. A coworker of mine needed to be taken to a hyundai dealership so that she may pick up her vehicle for some servicing that she had done, and during my attempt at parking I lost my power steering. At first I couldn't move the car so I had put my vehicle in park and then I turned it off. I had turned to my coworker and she had noticed my difficulty steering. I had then started my car once again and tried to park but this time I was capable of steering. The number of turns it took to actually steer were far beyond the usual and it was coupled with a chatter that I both could feel and hear. Luckily I opted for a warrant that included roadside assistance and I had my vehicle towed to the dealer. I've yet to receive any sort reply from my dealer and I will surely keep the appropriate authorities notified. *tr
Recalls on the 2011 model year
NHTSA has issued 7 recall campaigns covering the 2011 Lincoln Mkz, affecting an estimated 173,115 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2011 — 154th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 13 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2018 comes out best at 64 and 2019 worst at 73, with 2011 itself at 70.
If the model year is negotiable, 2018, 2007, 2008, 2014 and 2015 score lower than 2011 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2006–2012 generation specifically, 2007 is the strongest year at 64 and 2010 the weakest at 70.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2006-2012 generation, 2007 Lincoln Mkz scores best at 64 and 2010 Lincoln Mkz worst at 70.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other steering problem from about 34k and airbag inflator rupture from about 45k.
On a 2011 Lincoln Mkz with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other steering problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
181 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 181 reports, 102 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 56% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2011 Lincoln Mkz?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (51 reports, median 50,000 miles), other body or interior problem (11 reports, median 55,000 miles) and other steering problem (9 reports, median 65,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2011 Lincoln Mkz problems start?
Airbag inflator rupture is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 50,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 45,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 67,000 miles.
Is the 2011 Lincoln Mkz reliable?
It scores 70 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 154th riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2011 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Lincoln Mkz is best?
Within the 2006–2012 generation, 2007 scores best at 64 out of 100 and 2010 worst at 70. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
