2007 Lincoln Mkz: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2007 Lincoln Mkz
On the 2007 Lincoln Mkz, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 65,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 80,000 miles. Overall it scores 64 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.
High risk for a 2007 — 284th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 305 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 31 named failure modes on the 2007 Lincoln Mkz, and the three most-reported carry 56% of everything filed.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 121 reports, about 1.9 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 48k to 90,000 miles.
Other brake problem follows with 32 reports, usually reported between 76k to 155,000 miles.
Other wheel or tire problem follows with 17 reports, usually reported between 53k to 105,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (139), brakes (42) and wheels (19).
At what mileage it happens
127 of the reports on the 2007 Lincoln Mkz came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 80,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 26% by 50,000 miles, 61% by 100,000 miles and 83% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 4 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, which alone holds 12% of the dated reports.
9% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, so this is mostly a story about older, higher-mileage cars.
In the order they tend to show up: airbag inflator rupture around 65k, other wheel or tire problem around 75k, other brake problem around 105k and other body or interior problem around 105k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 4 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 16 mention a crash, 3 a fire, 5 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.41, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other brake problem at $300–$1,800, other wheel or tire problem at $200–$1,500 and airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
6% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Lincoln Mkz draws about 4.7 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 80th percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 65,066 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall. Received notice 07/11/2016 of recall involving the passenger side airbag. The recall specifically states "a ruptured inflator can send inflator parts toward vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death. I contacted ford customer relationship center on 07/11/2016 and spoke to aaron. I asked him about deactivating the passenger side airbag and his instructions were not to do so. As of this date there is no remedy, I am unable to sell my vehicle, my wife may be in serious danger should we have a frontal collision with airbag deployment. Information available indicates some manufacturers are recommending deactivation. Please advise so that I may take proper action.
Takata recall - I received recall letter july 2016. To this date the dealer (central florida lincoln in orlando fl) cannot give me an answer as to when the airbag will be replaced. All they tell me is that they don't have the parts yet. I am very inconvenienced as I cannot have passengers in the front seat. I see that other vehicles have been repaired - when is lincoln going to have parts to repair?
Other brake problem
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 lincoln mkz. While driving 30 MPH, the accelerator pedal became depressed when the contact was depressing the brake pedal. The failure has occurred on six occasions. The vehicle rolled over and crashed in a field. The weather was not a factor. The contact was cut out of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. He was hospitalized for observation. There were no other vehicles involved. The vehicle was destroyed. The dealer did not diagnose the failure prior to the crash. The contact has a photo of the crash from the local newspaper. The approximate failure and current mileages were 5,000. Updated 11-25-08 *bf updated 11/26/08. *jb

Other wheel or tire problem
I own a 2007 lincoln mkz with michelin energy mxv4 tires DOT number b90a nnhx 0207 which are original equipment on the vehicle. During normal operation in the last 6 months I have experienced valve stem failures on 3 of the 4 original tires leading to a severe air leak and in two instances damage to the sidewall of the tire. In each case the damage was repaired by replacing the tire and/or valve stem at a lincoln dealership. The dealer, ford motor company, and michelin refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. *tr
Lincoln mk7 2007. Car has consistant slow tire leaks due to poor wheel and rim quality. This is evidenced by the large amounts of chrome that has flaked off the wheels. Both ford and the dealerhsip refuse to do any thing to correct. *tr
Recalls on the 2007 model year
NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Lincoln Mkz, affecting an estimated 158,983 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electron and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.
- Consequence
- The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2007 — 284th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 13 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2018 comes out best at 64 and 2019 worst at 73, with 2007 itself at 64.
No other year of this model scores meaningfully better than 2007, so if this generation is what you want, the year is not the lever.
Within the 2006–2012 generation specifically, 2007 is the strongest year at 64 and 2010 the weakest at 70.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2006-2012 generation, 2007 Lincoln Mkz scores best at 64 and 2010 Lincoln Mkz worst at 70.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: airbag inflator rupture from about 48k, other wheel or tire problem from about 53k, other body or interior problem from about 68k and other brake problem from about 76k.
On a 2007 Lincoln Mkz with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether airbag inflator rupture has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
The limits of complaint data
305 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 305 reports, 127 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 42% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers

The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (121 reports, median 65,000 miles), other brake problem (32 reports, median 105,000 miles) and other wheel or tire problem (17 reports, median 75,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2007 Lincoln Mkz problems start?
Airbag inflator rupture is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 65,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 50,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 80,000 miles.
Is the 2007 Lincoln Mkz reliable?
It scores 64 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 284th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Lincoln Mkz is best?
Within the 2006–2012 generation, 2007 scores best at 64 out of 100 and 2010 worst at 70. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
