2018 Jaguar XF: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2018 Jaguar XF

Only 2 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 2018 Jaguar XF, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported door latch or handle failure.

Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Door latch or handle failure body 1 0 — — — 0.5 $250–$1,200 High
Other speed control problem adas 1 1 — 88k — 0.5 $250–$2,000 Critical

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Recalls on the 2018 model year

NHTSA has issued 3 recall campaigns covering the 2018 Jaguar XF, affecting an estimated 3,326 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags, fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:fuel rail and electrical system: instrument cluster/panel. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

AIR BAGS

307 vehicles 2018-02-15
Defect
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain 2018 XF Sportbrake vehicles. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) calibration may be incorrect, possibly causing the frontal air bags to deploy improperly in a low speed crash.
Consequence
In the event of a crash, the driver and the front seat passenger may not be properly protected by the frontal air bags, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy
Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the air bag system, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 6, 2018. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is H090.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM:FUEL RAIL

10,073 vehicles 2018-02-02
Defect
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain 2018 Jaguar XE, XF, E-PACE, F-PACE and F-TYPE vehicles equipped with a 2.0L gasoline engine. The fuel rail end caps may leak, possibly resulting in fuel vapor or liquid fuel leaking into the engine bay.
Consequence
A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rail, free of charge. The recall began on March 8, 2018. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is H081.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

7,036 vehicles 2017-10-26
Defect
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Jaguar XF and F-Pace, 2016-2017 Jaguar XJ and 2018 Jaguar XE vehicles. The instrument cluster (IC) may intermittently go blank.
Consequence
A blank instrument cluster will not show important information like vehicle speed, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 19, 2017. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is H056.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Every year of the Jaguar XF

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2018 Jaguar XF are door latch or handle failure (1 report) and other speed control problem (1 report, around 88k miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Other years of the same model do have enough: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The mechanical parts are often shared across those years, so their pages are the better guide to what this one is likely to do, with the caveat that a shared part is not a shared production line.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
