2009 Jaguar XF: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2009 Jaguar XF
On the 2009 Jaguar XF, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, with 13 reports on file. The earliest to appear is other powertrain problem, reported by a median of 40,000 miles. Overall it scores 76 out of 100, severe risk for a 2009.
Severe risk for a 2009 — 45th riskiest of the 295 2009 vehicles we can rate. 124 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 27 named failure modes on the 2009 Jaguar XF, and the three most-reported carry 27% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 13 reports and about 1.6 per 1,000 vehicles.
Other powertrain problem follows with 12 reports, usually reported between 25k to 65,000 miles.
Other body or interior problem follows with 9 reports, median 60,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into transmission (20), airbag (14) and engine (12).
The mileage the reports cluster at
90 of the reports on the 2009 Jaguar XF came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 42,500 miles.
Cumulatively, 54% by 50,000 miles and 87% by 100,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, which alone holds 17% of the dated reports.
36% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 6 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 2 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.29, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000 and other engine problem at $300–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
27% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2009 Jaguar XF draws about 16 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 93rd percentile of complaint rates among 2009 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 7,918 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2009 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Nhtsa & airbagrecall.com say my VIN is not included. Creditkarma.com (insurance by vehicle evaluation score) and "chapter 11 legal notice" re: takata airbags say I'm included. Who is correct in this serious and consequential recall?
Takata recall-safety recall j069 takata passenger airbags-recall no 16v373. Received recall notification letter dated july 29, 2016. To date have not received 2nd notification to take car to authorized dealer. I have several attempts to check status and told the parts are not available.
Other powertrain problem
I leased a new 2009 jaguar xf on 3/17/08. The car had one noticeable serious design defect that will certainly kill someone eventually. I reported it to the dealer, sale, service, and regional jaguar. The car has the new "paddle" shifting levers behind the steering wheel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. It is nearly impossible to drive the car without accidentally hitting the paddles -sometimes at inopportune moments, sometimes at high speed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 jaguar xf. While driving at speeds of 10 MPH in a parking lot, the electronic shift lever would not shift out of the drive position. The contact then shut off the engine but was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where the electronic shift lever was replaced. The failure mileage was 14,990 and the current mileage was 15,680.
Other body or interior problem
2009 jaguar xf - when brake pedal is depressed, it goes past the accelerator pedal causing the foot to hit the accelerator and the brake at the same time. More pressure on the brake causes more pressure on the accelerator. Has happened three times at very low speeds during parking. Jaguar says they are aware of the problem but there's not a fix. "be careful" they say.*tr
I have enjoyed this vehicle overall except for three issues limited to quality. The nav unit failed shutting down the entire fiber optic network and the dash pad delaminated. The front lca busing are also problematic. *tr
Recalls on the 2009 model year
NHTSA has issued 6 recall campaigns covering the 2009 Jaguar XF, affecting an estimated 25,407 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module and air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

- Remedy
- Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2016. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J065.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
3,754 vehicles 2008-11-24- Defect
- Jaguar is recalling 3,754 my 2009 xf vehicles for instrument cluster speaker function problems. The speaker wires may fracture. As a result, the speaker will cease to operate.
- Consequence
- If the speaker fails, the following audible notifications are impacted: turn indicator, seat belt warning, lights 'on' warning, driver's door open with key in ignition, driver intervene (adaptive cruise control vehicles only) and seat memory. The audible seat belt warning is to remind drivers to wear their safety belt. If the audible warning is not present, drivers may neglect to wear their safety belt, thereby increasing the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will verify the instrument cluster speaker function and reconfigure the instrument cluster control module software. The recall began on december 5, 2008. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.
SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
7,918 vehicles 2008-08-14- Defect
- Jaguar is recalling 7,918 my 2009 xf vehicles. The rear safety belt d-ring assembly may not rotate properly around the safety belt anchorage mounting bolt. If the assembly is not held together when tightening, the d-ring and/or washer can separate from the shoulder of the spacer, allowing these parts to be partially clamped by the spacer, forming a burr on either the d-ring or the washer and subsequently limiting proper rotation of the d-ring.
- Consequence
- In the event of a crash, a seat occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the outboard rear safety belt d-ring and, if necessary, the d-ring assembly will be removed and any burrs on the d-ring or washer filed flat. The d-ring assembly will then be reinstalled to correct the condition. The recall began on august 29, 2008. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

How it ranks in the 2009 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
Better and worse years of the same car
Severe risk for a 2009 — 45th riskiest of the 295 2009 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 7 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2012 comes out best at 73 and 2015 worst at 81, with 2009 itself at 76.
No other year of this model scores meaningfully better than 2009, so if this generation is what you want, the year is not the lever.
Within the 2009–2015 generation specifically, 2012 is the strongest year at 73 and 2015 the weakest at 81.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2009-2015 generation, 2012 Jaguar XF scores best at 73 and 2015 Jaguar XF worst at 81.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other powertrain problem from about 25k.
On a 2009 Jaguar XF with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other powertrain problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
The limits of complaint data
124 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 124 reports, 90 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 73% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2009 Jaguar XF?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (13 reports, median 75,000 miles), other powertrain problem (12 reports, median 40,000 miles) and other body or interior problem (9 reports, median 60,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2009 Jaguar XF problems start?
Other powertrain problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 40,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 25,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 42,500 miles.
Is the 2009 Jaguar XF reliable?
It scores 76 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 45th riskiest of the 295 2009 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2009 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Jaguar XF is best?
Within the 2009–2015 generation, 2012 scores best at 73 out of 100 and 2015 worst at 81. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
