2015 Ford Focus: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2015 Ford Focus
On the 2015 Ford Focus, the failure owners report most often is other powertrain problem, and the reports cluster around 56,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other body or interior problem, reported by a median of 25,000 miles. Overall it scores 75 out of 100, severe risk for a 2015.
Severe risk for a 2015 — 70th riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. 1,329 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 63 named failure modes on the 2015 Ford Focus, and the three most-reported carry 42% of everything filed.
Other powertrain problem leads with 385 reports, about 2.1 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 28k to 82,000 miles.
Other engine problem follows with 104 reports, usually reported between 37k to 105,000 miles. 2 of those reports mention a fire.
Other fuel system problem follows with 70 reports, usually reported between 53k to 87,500 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.
By system, the reports fall mostly into transmission (479), fuel (163) and engine (162).
At what mileage it happens
841 of the reports on the 2015 Ford Focus came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 60,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 41% by 50,000 miles, 88% by 100,000 miles and 97% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 5 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 70,000 and 80,000 miles, which alone holds 12% of the dated reports.
28% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other body or interior problem around 24k, seat belt or retractor failure around 26k, airbag inflator rupture around 43k and other speed control problem around 44k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 5 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 33 mention a crash, 4 a fire and 18 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.18, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other fuel system problem at $300–$2,200 and fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure at $250–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
53% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures, so more than half of what owners complained about here is expensive.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2015 Ford Focus draws about 7.3 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 87th percentile of complaint rates among 2015 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 183,228 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2015 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other powertrain problem
I traded this vehicle in from a 2012 ford fiesta, which after three years had become a rolling disaster, from the faulty transmission to the always-dying battery and two recalls. The dealer assured me the 2015 focus was redesigned and much better. I'll admit it drives much better, is roomier, and no jerking in the transmission like the fiesta's "automated manual" transmission did. But now when the vehicle gets hot, I smell an overwhelming smell of something burning, almost like a gasket, rubbery type smell. I don't know if it's brakes, engine oil, what. I told the service dept. About it, but they said with july they were short of help with vacations, and since the car only had 500 miles on it, I had "plenty of time" on the warranty, not to worry about it. They said to let it break in at least another 500 miles. So far I've not had smoke, starting or stalling problems like others have reported. I have broken in lots of brand new cars in my lifetime, and never, ever had a burning smell. I contacted ford customer service and got the usual nonsense of "we'll escalate this issue with your local dealer," and like the fiesta, nothing…
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford focus. When attempting to drive, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000. Ma 10/19/15 *cn
Other engine problem
I bought this car less than 6 mos. Ago. It has had 2 recalls so far. The transmission has a problem. It jumps and acts like it is going to die. Twice when I have started it there was a knocking like the engine had something wrong. When I changed the gear the knocking quit. When I run the heater there is a burning smell. I took it in and told them I was afraid to drive it and they did the recalls then told me they couldn't make it do the other things I had mentioned. I ask them to put me in something else and they said I would have to pay $400.00-$500.00 a month payment. I believe ford knew of this problem but continues to sell them so when people complain they can charge them more money. I am a 55 year old woman that drives 120 miles a day back and forth to work. When I get off work I drive home in the dark. I am afraid to drive this car!!! Ford won't do anything about it! Someone is going to get killed in this car because of the engine hesitation. I picked it up and now it is worse! When I turn the corner it does that jerking thing now like it is going to die. I hope you can help protect consumers . The jerking happens when you…
The ford focus stutters at startup when the engine is warm the car gets worse. The car will stall and is extremely dangerous. Ford has no fix they just tell me it is a manual transmission in an automatic car. I have tried premium fuel nothing helps. This is my daughters first car and I am afraid for her life
Other fuel system problem
My car stalls shakes and studders when I accelerate, even after I turn the traction control off it continues ,I've nearly been rear ended plenty of times. I don't feel safe and either does my passengers as and I'm sure this jerking as and tire spinning will cause other problems.
The brake pedal depressed all the way to the floor but deceleration was significantly delayed. The steering shuddered and the car jerked from side to side. Front end shuddered repeatedly.
Recalls on the 2015 model year
NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2015 Ford Focus, affecting an estimated 597,354 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:storage:evaporative emissions:canister, power train:manual transmission, equipment:electrical:engine block heater and latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

How 2015 compares with the other years
Severe risk for a 2015 — 70th riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 20 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1999 comes out best at 55 and 2014 worst at 80, with 2015 itself at 75.
If the model year is negotiable, 1999, 2011, 2009, 2004, 2010, 2005, 2003, 2001 and 2000 score lower than 2015 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2012–2018 generation specifically, 2018 is the strongest year at 74 and 2014 the weakest at 80.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2012-2018 generation, 2018 Ford Focus scores best at 74 and 2014 Ford Focus worst at 80.
What to look at before buying one
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: dual-clutch or clutch-pack failure from about 10k, other electrical problem from about 12k, seat belt or retractor failure from about 14k and other body or interior problem from about 15k.
On a 2015 Ford Focus with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether dual-clutch or clutch-pack failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
What this page cannot tell you
1,329 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 1,329 reports, 841 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 63% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2015 Ford Focus?
The most-reported failures are other powertrain problem (385 reports, median 56,000 miles), other engine problem (104 reports, median 70,000 miles) and other fuel system problem (70 reports, median 70,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2015 Ford Focus problems start?
Other body or interior problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 25,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 15,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 60,000 miles.
Is the 2015 Ford Focus reliable?
It scores 75 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 70th riskiest of the 273 2015 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2015 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Ford Focus is best?
Within the 2012–2018 generation, 2018 scores best at 74 out of 100 and 2014 worst at 80. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
