2016 Ford Edge: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2016 Ford Edge
On the 2016 Ford Edge, the failure owners report most often is other engine problem, and the reports cluster around 80,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other driver assistance problem, reported by a median of 10,000 miles. Overall it scores 76 out of 100, severe risk for a 2016.
Severe risk for a 2016 — 64th riskiest of the 255 2016 vehicles we can rate. 1,105 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 73 named failure modes on the 2016 Ford Edge, and the three most-reported carry 31% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other engine problem leads with 193 reports, about 2.0 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 59k to 108,000 miles.
Other steering problem follows with 78 reports, usually reported between 7k to 40,000 miles.
Misfire or rough idle follows with 74 reports, usually reported between 64k to 100,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into engine (353), brakes (142) and steering (98).
The mileage the reports cluster at
585 of the reports on the 2016 Ford Edge came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 55,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 46% by 50,000 miles, 83% by 100,000 miles and 97% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 16% of the dated reports.
36% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.
In the order they tend to show up: other driver assistance problem around 8k, other speed control problem around 11k, other steering problem around 15k and other visibility problem around 27k.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 21 mention a crash, 5 a fire and 16 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.20, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other steering problem at $350–$2,400, misfire or rough idle at $250–$1,600 and other brake problem at $300–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
43% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2016 Ford Edge draws about 11 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 90th percentile of complaint rates among 2016 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 97,532 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2016 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other engine problem
Driving down the road and the vehicle suddenly went to idle. Had to coast to a stop on the side of the road. The car was still idling but when I tried to give it gas, nothing happened. I shut the car off, restarted and it worked fine. Approx. 10 miles later, did the same thing. Car only has 9,200 miles. I drive the interstate daily and this is going to be very dangerous if it happens there. Will be at the dealer at 9:00am sharp tomorrow.
The vehicle was in motion in moderate traffic going approximately 45mph when the engine unexpectedly shutoff and the accelerator became non-responsive. Was able to carefully coast the vehicle to the shoulder, put in park, and restart the vehicle. Extremely concerned that this happened as I'm traveling out of state with my family on vacation. We purchased this vehicle brand new within the last 60 days and it has less than 2,000 miles on it. We thought we were getting rid of a lemon vehicle when we traded in for this, but although our last vehicle had a lot of issues it wasn't nearly as concerning or dangerous as this 1 issue with the ford edge. There should be an immediate nationwide recall.
Other steering problem
Adaptive steering fault - service required! While driving down the road, steering wheel changed ratio, became extremely light and disconnected from wheels. Steering wheel also changed to a 45 degree right angle while driving straight down the road. This is a safety issue! Escalated to ford, stating I lost confidence in driving this car. Didn't want to be a statistic with my kids when this happens again when going down the highway at 70mph! Extremely hazardous thankfully my kids were not in the car when this happened.
Adaptive steering fault service required error. I turned it on from the parking lot at work and the error came up and the steering wheel was not aligned with the tires, when driving straight the steering wheel was 1/4 turned to the left
Misfire or rough idle
Vehicle mileage - approximately 5300 fuel level approx. 3/4 full fuel line connection separation, causing fuel starvation to engine, engine stoppage, loss of power steering and brakes. Enroute 25 july 2016 on us hwy 64 from durango, co to taos, nm, cresting 10,500 ft mountain pass, starting downgrade, vehicle started to misfire, fuel smell, fluctuating RPM between 1500 and zero, then engine stopped, losing power to steering and braking, making it difficult to safely pull to a stop. Fortunate to locate a level pull-off. Upon exiting vehicle, observed strong fuel smell, but no fuel leak in engine compartment or under vehicle. Opened fuel tank filler cap and vented with filler tool. Attempted to start vehicle without success, but strong fuel smell and fuel spill generated under the vehicle. Pushed vehicle away from fuel spill. Attempted to start vehicle a second time without success, generating another fuel spill from cover panel under lh passenger. Removed cover and found outboard of the two fuel lines separated at connection. Reassembled fuel line connection, believing the connection to be secure. Successfully restarted vehicle and…
Recalls on the 2016 model year
NHTSA has issued 7 recall campaigns covering the 2016 Ford Edge, affecting an estimated 283,284 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover back over prevention: sensing system: camera, service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines and power train:automatic transmission:gear position indication . Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

Where 2016 sits in the model line
Severe risk for a 2016 — 64th riskiest of the 255 2016 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 18 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2021 comes out best at 67 and 2019 worst at 78, with 2016 itself at 76.
If the model year is negotiable, 2021, 2022, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2024, 2023, 2009, 2007, 2014 and 2008 score lower than 2016 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2011–2018 generation specifically, 2013 is the strongest year at 69 and 2017 the weakest at 77.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2011-2018 generation, 2013 Ford Edge scores best at 69 and 2017 Ford Edge worst at 77.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other fuel system problem from about 3k, other driver assistance problem from about 3k, other speed control problem from about 3k and other steering problem from about 7k.
On a 2016 Ford Edge with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other fuel system problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
1,105 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 1,105 reports, 585 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 53% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2016 Ford Edge?
The most-reported failures are other engine problem (193 reports, median 80,000 miles), other steering problem (78 reports, median 15,000 miles) and misfire or rough idle (74 reports, median 85,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2016 Ford Edge problems start?
Other driver assistance problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 10,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 5,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 55,000 miles.
Is the 2016 Ford Edge reliable?
It scores 76 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 64th riskiest of the 255 2016 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2016 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Ford Edge is best?
Within the 2011–2018 generation, 2013 scores best at 69 out of 100 and 2017 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
