2007 Ford Edge: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2007 Ford Edge

On the 2007 Ford Edge, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 100,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other visibility problem, reported by a median of 1,000 miles. Overall it scores 72 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.

High risk for a 2007 — 75th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 1,242 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 69 named failure modes on the 2007 Ford Edge, and the three most-reported carry 35% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Airbag inflator rupture leads with 250 reports, about 3.8 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 83k to 125,000 miles.

Other powertrain problem follows with 113 reports, usually reported between 52k to 102,000 miles.

Fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure follows with 71 reports, usually reported between 83k to 115,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (272), fuel (149) and transmission (141).

At what mileage it happens

801 of the reports on the 2007 Ford Edge came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 89,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 23% by 50,000 miles, 62% by 100,000 miles and 92% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 15 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 90,000 and 100,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.

18% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: other visibility problem around 1k, sunroof failure or glass breakage around 5k, other wheel or tire problem around 20k and other body or interior problem around 23k.

How bad it is when it goes

Across the named modes, 19 mention a crash, 34 a fire and 30 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.81, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure at $250–$1,800 and master cylinder or brake booster failure at $450–$2,200. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

25% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Ford Edge draws about 19 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 91st percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 65,066 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

What owners wrote

Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.

Airbag inflator rupture

Dome lights by rear view mirror do not go off. Since this is a problem with many ford vehicles; I feel it should be a recall. I got a notice months ago about a recall about the takata air bags on my ford edge, also. Still awaiting the repair. The recall said to wait for them to call.

Takata recall: the front passenger airbag was recalled on june 1, 2016. Current official recall status is "recall incomplete. Remedy not yet available". The local ford dealership had sent me a letter stating the parts were unavailable to replace the airbag and they would notify me when they became available. Today is march 27, 2017 and the parts are still unavailable. Its been 10 months, and it is still dangerous to drive my vehicle, especially for my passengers. To my knowledge I cannot sell the vehicle either, until the problem is fixed. This is very problematic and dangerous. I would appreciate any efforts to resolve this issue, and solve whatever problem is causing the delay.

Other powertrain problem

I own a 2007 ford edge, purchased in may 2007. The transmission seems to "shudder" when upshifting or downshifting at speeds between 35-55 MPH. It is apparent when taking your foot off the gas to slow and then applying gas to speed back up. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealership to be checked and was told it was probably "flat spots" on the tires and the problen would go away after 3000 or so miles to give the tires an opportunity to round out. The vehicle was taken in a second time and taken to another dealership for their transmission mechanic to look at. They had the vehicle for over 10 hours and couldn't seem to find anything wrong or get the vehicle to duplicate the problem we brought it in for. The vehicle now has 5600 miles on it and the problem seems to be getting worse. I am going to take it back to the dealer to have it checked again. This time, I'm going to demand to take a drive in another edge to see if it has the same shifting problems I am currently having.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford edge. While the vehicle was idling on an incline, the contact removed her foot from the brake pedal. Before she could depress the accelerator pedal, the vehicle rolled backwards. The dealer stated that the failure was normal. The failure mileage was 200 and current mileage was 3,000. The consumer stated the vehicle will roll back on any type of incline while in the drive position and the dealer stated this process is normal. Updated 11/06/07 *tr

Fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure

Found door seal on 3 door bad, found very light to just primer and clear coat paint on all door jams, some hinges. Newest is a safety item. While pumping gas after the first click gas shot out of the filler neck. Happened a second time and gas soaked my wife's cloths. Then the tank cap light came on. Seams like the tank is not venting and as you fill the tank with gasoline air has to escape and pushes out gas with it. Dealer not sure what would cause this. Dealer is replacing filler neck. Dealer has replaced seals and repainted all areas were just primer. I have called ford and they replied with it is not a ford problem it is the dealers responsibility to look the vehicle over and have 30 days to send it back. I have been to the dealer 7 times. I think ford need to take responsibility for this. I have driven 700 miles back and forth for warranty work. This vehicle only has 2700 miles on it and is a little over 2 months old. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford edge. The contact stated that she noticed the smell of gas fumes for several days after filling the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who informed the contact that the seals were loose and the entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who made a note of the failure and referred her to NHTSA. The current and failure mileages were approximately 65,000.

Recalls on the 2007 model year

NHTSA has issued 6 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Ford Edge, affecting an estimated 171,993 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal, suspension:front:hub and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2007 field

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2007 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

How 2007 compares with the other years

High risk for a 2007 — 75th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 18 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2021 comes out best at 67 and 2019 worst at 78, with 2007 itself at 72.

If the model year is negotiable, 2021 and 2022 score lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2007–2010 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 72 and 2010 the weakest at 74.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2007-2010 generation, 2009 Ford Edge scores best at 72 and 2010 Ford Edge worst at 74.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other visibility problem from about 150, sunroof failure or glass breakage from about 150, other body or interior problem from about 2k and other brake problem from about 4k.

On a 2007 Ford Edge with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other visibility problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

Where these figures stop being useful

1,242 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 1,242 reports, 801 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 64% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2007 Ford Edge?

The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (250 reports, median 100,000 miles), other powertrain problem (113 reports, median 85,000 miles) and fuel tank, filler or evap failure (71 reports, median 92,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2007 Ford Edge problems start?

Other visibility problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 1,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 200 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 89,000 miles.

Is the 2007 Ford Edge reliable?

It scores 72 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 75th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Ford Edge is best?

Within the 2007–2010 generation, 2009 scores best at 72 out of 100 and 2010 worst at 74. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
