2010 Chevrolet Traverse: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

On the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, the failure owners report most often is other steering problem, and the reports cluster around 70,000 miles. The earliest to appear is water pump failure, reported by a median of 50,000 miles. Overall it scores 73 out of 100, high risk for a 2010.

High risk for a 2010 — 96th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. 922 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 56 named failure modes on the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, and the three most-reported carry 41% of everything filed.

Other steering problem leads with 175 reports, about 3.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 58k to 90,000 miles.

Timing chain, belt or tensioner failure follows with 128 reports, usually reported between 72k to 108,000 miles.

Steering rack, gear or tie rod failure follows with 72 reports, usually reported between 45k to 77,500 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into steering (332), engine (217) and adas (88).

At what mileage it happens

775 of the reports on the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 75,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 19% by 50,000 miles, 76% by 100,000 miles and 95% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 60,000 and 70,000 miles, which alone holds 16% of the dated reports.

10% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: water pump failure around 51k, steering rack, gear or tie rod failure around 60k, other body or interior problem around 60k and other steering problem around 70k.

Severity, and what it costs

Across the named modes, 21 mention a crash, 9 a fire and 14 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.63, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other steering problem at $350–$2,400, timing chain, belt or tensioner failure at $1,200–$4,500, steering rack, gear or tie rod failure at $700–$2,600 and other engine problem at $300–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

29% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse draws about 18 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 95th percentile of complaint rates among 2010 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 51,513 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2010 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other steering problem

Vehicle loses power steering assist at low vehicle and engine speed, such as pulling into parking space or driveway. Occurs infrequently and without warning. Local dealer looked at it and cannot replicate problem. Is safety issue as an unsuspecting driver could lose control and hit another vehicle or person. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. The contact stated that when making a turn at low speeds, the power steering made a loud noise and the vehicle stalled. The dealer was made aware of the failure who advised the contact to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 44,000 and the current mileage was 45,000.

Timing chain, belt or tensioner failure

Took vehicle in to get check engine light issue looked at (timing belt issue, not a recall, but covered by chevy). While they had the engine tore down, they informed us that there was a fluid leak with the power steering gear and was going to cost $1,400 to fix as it was not covered under warranty. This was hard to believe given that the car only has 34,000 miles. Chevy subsequently reduced the cost to $900. We were also told that chevy had covered the repair cost for some vins for this same issue; but our VIN was not covered. Looking at posts on the internet; this issue can lead to a loss of power steering while moving, very concerning and there should be a recall. Fortunately, this issue was identified in the shop and not while we were driving. *js

I purchased our 2010 traverse new in september of 2009. We have experienced the power steering failure and replacement 3 times. The power steering gear was replaced at 9500 miles, at 35,000 miles, and now it is out again at 48,000 miles. I have a check engine light that won't go off, now they are telling me my timing chain needs replaced based on the codes detected from the computer. I have tried to get gm, and or a local dealer to work with me on these on going issues, and they could care less. *tr

Steering rack, gear or tie rod failure

Vehicle had been parked in garage when we noticed pink fluid under car. Took it to local repair shop where they diagnosed the power steering gear valve solenoid is leaking. Have to take it to dealer for repair. Dealer has already replaced steering gear input housing (10-29-12) and said they had 4 traverses in with the same problem that week. *tr

Noted power steering fluid in driveway. Had it diagnosed at the dealership as a leak from the steering column. Was told the steering gear assembly had to be replaced at a $1300 charge. I've researched the issue and found many, many complaints regarding this same problem. I have also read complaints that various repairs had been made to solve the steering problems with other traverses, but still problems with the steering system occur. I'm concerned my steering may go out entirely during travel and end up in a fatality. A recall should be required to rectify this issue. *tr

Recalls on the 2010 model year

NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, affecting an estimated 149,342 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:critical fasteners, structure:body:hatchback/liftgate, seat belts and air bags:side/window. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Defect
General motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 chevrolet traverse, buick enclave, gmc acadia, and saturn outlook vehicles. The second row seat side trim shield restricts the upward rotation of the safety belt buckle when the seat back is returned to a seating position after being folded flat. If the buckle contacts the seat frame, additional effort is required to return the seat to a seating position. If sufficient force is applied, the buckle cover could be pushed down the strap, exposing and partially depressing the red release button.
Consequence
The safety belt may not restrain the occupant as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
Remedy
Dealers will modify the second row seat side trim shields. If a safety belt buckle is damaged, dealers will replace it free of charge. The safety recall began on august 18, 2010. Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

How 2010 compares with the other years

High risk for a 2010 — 96th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 18 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2017 comes out best at 68 and 2020 worst at 81, with 2010 itself at 73.

If the model year is negotiable, 2017, 2015, 2016 and 2013 score lower than 2010 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2009–2017 generation specifically, 2017 is the strongest year at 68 and 2011 the weakest at 74.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2009-2017 generation, 2017 Chevrolet Traverse scores best at 68 and 2011 Chevrolet Traverse worst at 74.

Where to spend the inspection money

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other body or interior problem from about 30k, water pump failure from about 45k, steering rack, gear or tie rod failure from about 45k and other brake problem from about 49k.

On a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other body or interior problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

What this page cannot tell you

922 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 922 reports, 775 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 84% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse?

The most-reported failures are other steering problem (175 reports, median 70,000 miles), timing chain, belt or tensioner failure (128 reports, median 95,000 miles) and steering rack, gear or tie rod failure (72 reports, median 60,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2010 Chevrolet Traverse problems start?

Water pump failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 50,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 45,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 75,000 miles.

Is the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse reliable?

It scores 73 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 96th riskiest of the 275 2010 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2010 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Chevrolet Traverse is best?

Within the 2009–2017 generation, 2017 scores best at 68 out of 100 and 2011 worst at 74. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
