2007 Chevrolet Equinox: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox

On the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, the failure owners report most often is fuel pump failure, and the reports cluster around 77,000 miles. The earliest to appear is steering column or shaft failure, reported by a median of 25,000 miles. Overall it scores 69 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.

High risk for a 2007 — 170th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 950 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What breaks on the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox

Owners have reported 57 named failure modes on the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, and the three most-reported carry 28% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Fuel pump failure leads with 162 reports, about 8.5 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 58k to 100,000 miles.

Other electrical problem follows with 53 reports, usually reported between 49k to 87,500 miles.

Control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure follows with 48 reports, usually reported between 22k to 70,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into fuel (286), electrical (138) and steering (71).

When these failures get reported

769 of the reports on the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 74,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 28% by 50,000 miles, 73% by 100,000 miles and 93% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 6 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 60,000 and 70,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.

21% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: steering column or shaft failure around 23k, other wheel or tire problem around 37k, ABS module or sensor failure around 38k and other powertrain problem around 46k.

What happens when these parts fail

Across the named modes, 10 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 14 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.94, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: fuel pump failure at $600–$2,600, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure at $700–$3,000 and other fuel system problem at $300–$2,200. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

11% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox draws about 50 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 95th percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 19,033 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

What owners wrote

Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.

Fuel pump failure

Noticed strong smell of gasoline after driving. The smell lingered for several hours after the vehicle was parked. Brought to the dealer and was told that there was a fuel leak. Also fuel sensor indicated gas tank was 1/2 full, but dealer stated tank was full. Vehicle has 67000 miles on it. Dealer is replacing the fuel pump and fuel sensor under the powertrain warranty. No injuries or damage resulted from this, but I consider this to be a serious hazard as leaking fuel/fumes could have sparked an explosion. After researching this issue, it appears other owners have had similar complaints. *tr

66,800 miles NHTSA complaint 818320 filed 2010-10-04

There is an overwhelming smell of gasoline inside the vehicle. Prior to taking the vehicle into the shop you would have to turn the key over a couple times to prime the line before it would start. I was told there is a gas leak due to faulty fuel lines. Gm does not make the replacement lines separately so the entire fuel pump most be replaced. This is a huge safety issue and a manufacturing defect I should not have to pay for, unfortunately there is no recall so I will be paying for it out of pocket. *tr

Other electrical problem

My trip odometer keeps resetting on its own, when your going down the road. Also my car sounds like it is taking off when started the first time during the day. I was told it will warm up and go away. But it sounds like the exhaust is falling off or something. I think there is a problem with the computer since it has been. And the passenger seat air bag does not always come on. Reset several times, but keeps doing the same thing with the trip odometer. *tr

The passenger air bag only comes on now & then. My vehicle has been to the garage numerous times. I've explained what happens. Also have issue with wipes work, then not, blinkers work then not, blinkers double click. Radio gets real loud sometimes, beeps when door open real loud. Have replaced 3 batteries & two starters. But everytime in garage, hear "nothing wrong". I don't feel safe driving my car. I'm afraid if I get in accident my air bag wont work. All this started six months after bought car. *tr

Recalls on the 2007 model year

NHTSA has issued 4 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, affecting an estimated 25,077 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump, air bags, air bags:frontal:sensor/control module-inactive and visibility:windshield. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

49,768 vehicles 2012-09-19
Defect
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, or Texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arkansas…
Consequence
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 21, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles in for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

AIR BAGS

57,100 vehicles 2007-11-07
Defect
Certain passenger vehicles not equipped with optional roof rail airbags or optional sunroof fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 201,"occupant protection in interior impact." during NHTSA impact tests, the interior occupant protection test points exceeded the standard requirements.
Consequence
The results of this test indicated a possibility of an increased risk of head injury in a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will install an energy absorbing foam piece to each of the a-pillar trim assemblies free of charge. The recall began on may 8, 2008. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

437 vehicles 2007-08-07
Defect
Certain sport utility vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 208, "occupant crash protection." in these vehicles, the right front passenger seat is built with a passenger sensing system. When tested with a representative unrestrained small adult, the system is required to turn the right front passenger's frontal airbag on. An error in the seat sensor calibration can cause it to fail this test. In addition, this condition can prevent the airbag from turning off when the seat is occupied by a small child.
Consequence
Whenever the front passenger seat is occupied, the driver should always check the airbag indicator to see if the airbag is on or off. If it is not correct for the situation, the passenger should be moved to a different seat. This can increase the risk of injury to a seat occupant during certain crash conditions.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the seat's electronic control unit. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD

6,213 vehicles 2007-06-13
Defect
Certain vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 212, "windshield mounting." an incorrect primer may have been used when installing the windshield. The same primer may have also been applied to the liftgate glass and the side stationary glass.
Consequence
In the event of a crash, the windshield may not be retained to the extent required by the standard, increasing the risk of personal injuries to the vehicle occupants.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the windshield, the liftgate glass, and the side stationary glass. The recall began on june 14, 2007. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

High risk for a 2007 — 170th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 22 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2008 comes out best at 65 and 2019 worst at 83, with 2007 itself at 69.

If the model year is negotiable, 2008 and 2014 score lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2005–2009 generation specifically, 2008 is the strongest year at 65 and 2005 the weakest at 76.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2005-2009 generation, 2008 Chevrolet Equinox scores best at 65 and 2005 Chevrolet Equinox worst at 76.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other brake problem from about 80, instrument cluster or gauge failure from about 2k, ABS module or sensor failure from about 3k and steering column or shaft failure from about 13k.

On a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other brake problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

What this page cannot tell you

950 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 950 reports, 769 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 81% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox?

The most-reported failures are fuel pump failure (162 reports, median 77,000 miles), other electrical problem (53 reports, median 70,000 miles) and control module (ecm/pcm/bcm) failure (48 reports, median 50,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2007 Chevrolet Equinox problems start?

Steering column or shaft failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 25,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 15,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 74,000 miles.

Is the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox reliable?

It scores 69 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 170th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Chevrolet Equinox is best?

Within the 2005–2009 generation, 2008 scores best at 65 out of 100 and 2005 worst at 76. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
