1998 Chevrolet Cavalier: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier
On the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier, the failure owners report most often is steering rack, gear or tie rod failure, and the reports cluster around 70,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 82,000 miles. Overall it scores 68 out of 100, high risk for a 1998.
High risk for a 1998 — 90th riskiest of the 271 1998 vehicles we can rate. 473 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 58 named failure modes on the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier, and the three most-reported carry 26% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Steering rack, gear or tie rod failure leads with 52 reports, about 0.6 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 40k to 95,000 miles.
ABS module or sensor failure follows with 36 reports, median 85,000 miles.
Other body or interior problem follows with 35 reports, usually reported between 122k to 145,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into brakes (73), steering (68) and engine (67).
At what mileage it happens
104 of the reports on the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 82,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 24% by 50,000 miles, 62% by 100,000 miles and 85% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 80,000 and 90,000 miles, which alone holds 13% of the dated reports.
14% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 2 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 27 mention a crash, 11 a fire and 19 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.56, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: steering rack, gear or tie rod failure at $700–$2,600, ABS module or sensor failure at $500–$2,400, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000 and other engine problem at $300–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
21% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier draws about 5.0 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 83rd percentile of complaint rates among 1998 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 94,348 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 1998 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Steering rack, gear or tie rod failure
I was experiencing trouble in my car when iturned left at low speeds. If felt almost as though I was losing power in the steering part of my car. Shortly after that, a friend of mine emailed me a notice tham chevy was conducting a recall on my car type and described the same problem that I was having. The article from reuters said that it cause accidents but no fatalities. I immediately got my car fixed and was told that there was not an official recall out yet. I waited and once the recall was out, my car was not included. My car fits all of the parameters of the recall and was experiencing the same problem.
Chevrolet cavlier 1998 - the car is only 5 1/2 years old with 33,000 miles on it. I have had steering issues for more than 3 years with this car. I can not parallel park or make hard turns with out the steering locking up or forcing me to you my entire body weight to ge the wheel to move. When I've taken it to a dealership they simply say this is how the car is designed use the gas and that a recall has not been issued although according to this web page there has been. Apparantly according to gm my VIN number is not included in the nov/2002 recall for steering rack/pinion which sounds as if it is exactly what the problem is and that there are no recalls scheduled in the future.*ak
ABS module or sensor failure
Dt: consumer states there is a malfunction with the ABS system. At any speed, when brakes are applied, ABS kicks on and does not catch, but starts to jolt. Brake pedal seems to catch/release over and over, which caused extended stopping distances. Also causes rolling foward or backward in any weather condition or under any driving circumstances. Consumer has barely had an accident up to this point. Vehicle has rolled into traffic several times and consumer was forced to use the emergency brake to avoid an accident. *tt
Other body or interior problem
The dashboard developed cracks without warning. The dealer states the dash material needs be to replaced. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide additional information.
I was stopped at red light and when the light turned green I took off and felt a pull to the passenger side. I had my brother in law check it out and the sub-frame was rotted. We replaced it but feel this needed to be brought to your attention. *tr
Recalls on the 1998 model year
NHTSA has issued 11 recall campaigns covering the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier, affecting an estimated 145,644 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover exterior lighting:headlights, exterior lighting, steering and fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:pressure relief dev. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
1,415,231 vehicles 2004-01-27- Defect
- On certain passenger vehicles. If the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts.
- Consequence
- If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. The fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants or cause damage to adjoining structures.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a relay kit in these vehicles to prevent high current from flowing through the ignition switch, and check that your car will start with a properly charged battery and, if necessary, replace the ignition switch. Owner notification will begin on march 1, 2004. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, pontiac at 1-800-620-7668, buick at 1-866-608-8080, or oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537. STEERING:RACK AND PINION
1,159,156 vehicles 2002-11-04- Defect
- Certain passenger vehicles and mini vans have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. These and some other retainers used in vehicles assembled between january 1, 1996 and october 31, 1997, could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape.
- Consequence
- If this occurs, the pinion shaft can be forced upward during left turns and back down as the steering wheel is moved back and to the right. If the pinion shaft moves further, the driver will need to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel, similar to a vehicle without power assisted steering. If the pinion shaft moves even further, the driver will require much higher effort to turn left and may not be able to turn the wheel as much as intended. With the maximum pinion shaft movement, which requires internal gear component damage, the driver can encounter high…
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a new lower pinion bearing unless inspect of the existing bearing indicates that replacement of the gear assembly is necessary. Owner notification began january 24, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.
FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
391 vehicles 2000-02-28- Defect
- Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with bi-fuel compressed natural gas (cng) vehicles. The cng fuel line and the cng high pressure regulator coolant lines can contact other fuel (gasoline) and brake lines on the vehicle. Abrasion from contact can cause a leak in the brake pipe, fuel pipe, or both.
- Consequence
- Abrasion from contact can cause a leak in the brake pipe, fuel pipe, or both. A brake fluid leak could disable a portion of the brake system, causing longer stopping distances. Gasoline leaking from a fuel pipe, in the presence of an ignition source, could cause a vehicle fire.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect and reposition the cng fuel and coolant pipes and reposition/repair any damaged fuel or brake pipes as necessary.
WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS
24 vehicles 1997-11-24- Defect
- Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The wheel lug nuts were not tightened securely resulting in a fracture of the wheel studs.
- Consequence
- The wheel could separate from the vehicle. If the vehicle were in motion, a vehicle crash could result.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the torque of all wheel nuts and, if necessary, tighten any that may be below required torque.

How it ranks in the 1998 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 1998 — 90th riskiest of the 271 1998 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1999 comes out best at 66 and 2002 worst at 76, with 1998 itself at 68.
No other year of this model scores meaningfully better than 1998, so if this generation is what you want, the year is not the lever.
Within the 1996–2002 generation specifically, 1999 is the strongest year at 66 and 2002 the weakest at 76.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 1996-2002 generation, 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier scores best at 66 and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier worst at 76.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: steering rack, gear or tie rod failure from about 40k and other body or interior problem from about 122k.
On a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether steering rack, gear or tie rod failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
The limits of complaint data
473 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 473 reports, 104 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 22% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier?
The most-reported failures are steering rack, gear or tie rod failure (52 reports, median 70,000 miles), abs module or sensor failure (36 reports, median 85,000 miles) and other body or interior problem (35 reports, median 130,000 miles).
