2003 Cadillac Deville: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2003 Cadillac Deville
On the 2003 Cadillac Deville, the failure owners report most often is other electrical problem, and the reports cluster around 55,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 69,000 miles. Overall it scores 64 out of 100, high risk for a 2003.
High risk for a 2003 — 266th riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. 209 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 44 named failure modes on the 2003 Cadillac Deville, and the three most-reported carry 28% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other electrical problem leads with 33 reports, about 0.5 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 18k to 125,000 miles.
Other engine problem follows with 15 reports, usually reported between 16k to 85,000 miles.
Ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure follows with 10 reports, usually reported between 64k to 95,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into electrical (46), engine (43) and brakes (14).
The mileage the reports cluster at
149 of the reports on the 2003 Cadillac Deville came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 69,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 32% by 50,000 miles, 66% by 100,000 miles and 90% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 3 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 13% of the dated reports.
23% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other electrical problem around 53k, other engine problem around 60k, ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure around 94k and airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault around 94k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 3 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

How bad it is when it goes
Across the named modes, 13 mention a crash and 6 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.27, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other engine problem at $300–$4,000, ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure at $250–$1,500 and airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
28% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2003 Cadillac Deville draws about 3.0 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 77th percentile of complaint rates among 2003 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 69,816 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2003 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

The vehicle was purchased brand new and it has approximately 15000 and when turning into traffic the vehicle shuts down. The driver has to re-start the vehicle and put it in drive and the vehicle will go again. This defect always occurs when making a right turn. The vehicle has been to the dealers on several occasions and the problem will not duplicate itself and they tell the owner that there is nothing else they can do. Provide further details. *jb

My 2003 cadillac deville with 7200 miles on the odometer over the past twelve months has experienced intermittent decelerating engine stall. This car is a crash waiting to happen, as it has stalled over 30 times. This car has high rolling resistance, so when it stalls, it comes to a sudden stop. The dealer says he can't duplicate the stall, and there are no computer error codes. I don't know what else to do. Get rid of the car? If I don't use the new car warranty, the dealer will replace parts in an attempt to fix the problem. *nm

Recalls on the 2003 model year
NHTSA has issued 4 recall campaigns covering the 2003 Cadillac Deville, affecting an estimated 86,520 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover electrical system:ignition, fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly, air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module and air bags:frontal. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
3,141,731 vehicles 2014-06-23- Defect
- This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other…
- Consequence
- If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
102,212 vehicles 2003-07-01- Defect
- On certain cadillac deville and seville passenger vehicles, funeral coaches, and limousines equipped with a v8 (4.6l) engine, oldsmobile aurora passenger vehicles equipped with a v8 (4.0l ) engine, and pontiac bonneville ssei passenger vehicles equipped with a supercharged v6 (3.8l) engine, the fuel tank pressure sensors are unusually susceptible to malfunctions. If the sensor malfunctions, excessive vacuum can be applied during self-diagnostic testing.
- Consequence
- Fuel system components can be damaged and fuel can leak from the vehicle when it is refueled. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
- Remedy
- Dealers will replace the fuel tank pressure sensor. Owner notification began on october 17, 2003. Owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339; oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

- On certain mini vans, passenger and sport utility vehicles, some of these vehicles have a driver's side air bag that may not deploy as designed. In addition, the air bag inflator could rupture.
- Consequence
- This could result in reduced capability of the air bag to protect the driver. Also if the air bag inflator ruptured, pieces of the inflator could strike and injure the vehicle occupants.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect, and if necessary, install a new driver's air bag. Owner notification began on march 11, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact buick at 1-800-521-7300, cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, gmc at 1-800-462-8782, or pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.

133,221 vehicles 2002-08-09- Defect
- Certain passenger, mini vans, and sport utility vehicles have an air bag inflator on the driver's side that could fracture at a weld during a deployment.
- Consequence
- Pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants and the air bag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the driver.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect, and replace, if necessary, the air bag module assembly on the driver's side. Owner notification began august 15, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact buick at 1-800-521-7300, cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, gmc at 1-800-462-8782, oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

How 2003 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2003 — 266th riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 60 and 2000 worst at 67, with 2003 itself at 64.
If the model year is negotiable, 1997, 2004 and 2005 score lower than 2003 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2000–2005 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 60 and 2000 the weakest at 67.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2000-2005 generation, 2004 Cadillac Deville scores best at 60 and 2000 Cadillac Deville worst at 67.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other engine problem from about 16k, other electrical problem from about 18k, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault from about 24k and ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure from about 64k.
On a 2003 Cadillac Deville with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other engine problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
What this page cannot tell you
209 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 209 reports, 149 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 71% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2003 Cadillac Deville?
The most-reported failures are other electrical problem (33 reports, median 55,000 miles), other engine problem (15 reports, median 60,000 miles) and ignition switch, key fob or immobilizer failure (10 reports, median 95,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2003 Cadillac Deville problems start?
Other electrical problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 55,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 20,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 69,000 miles.
Is the 2003 Cadillac Deville reliable?
It scores 64 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 266th riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2003 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Cadillac Deville is best?
Within the 2000–2005 generation, 2004 scores best at 60 out of 100 and 2000 worst at 67. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
