2000 Cadillac Deville: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2000 Cadillac Deville
On the 2000 Cadillac Deville, the failure owners report most often is other electrical problem, and the reports cluster around 85,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other engine problem, reported by a median of 45,000 miles. Overall it scores 67 out of 100, high risk for a 2000.
High risk for a 2000 — 161st riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. 312 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 49 named failure modes on the 2000 Cadillac Deville, and the three most-reported carry 32% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other electrical problem leads with 40 reports, about 0.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 57k to 110,000 miles.
Other engine problem follows with 39 reports, usually reported between 26k to 70,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.
Other visibility problem follows with 21 reports, usually reported between 64k to 85,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into electrical (72), engine (59) and brakes (31).
When these failures get reported
154 of the reports on the 2000 Cadillac Deville came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 65,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 29% by 50,000 miles, 77% by 100,000 miles and 94% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 50,000 and 60,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.
21% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other engine problem around 43k, other visibility problem around 70k and other electrical problem around 85k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 2 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 50 mention a crash, 4 a fire, 41 an injury and 3 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.98, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other visibility problem at $150–$1,400 and seat belt or retractor failure at $200–$900. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
22% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2000 Cadillac Deville draws about 3.5 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 78th percentile of complaint rates among 2000 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 89,723 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2000 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other engine problem
Consumer stated that while driving the vehicle cut off. Once the vehicle stalled the driver lost all the power and could not steer vehicle to safety. This occurred on four separate occasions. Other visibility problem
The sun visor doesn't extend forward far enough. As a result, the visor obstructs driver's view. The visor was changed in the newer model year vehicles, but the manufacturer was not willing to resolve the problem although they were aware of visor's defect. *ak *cb *jb
Passenger side power window failed in the down (open) position during heavy rain. A very fragile plastic connector failed where connected to a cable. The service man commented that this is a very frequent failure on this car. Repair cost $291.50. *ak
Recalls on the 2000 model year
NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2000 Cadillac Deville, affecting an estimated 219,102 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover electrical system:ignition, seat belts:front:retractor, seat belts:front:buckle assembly and service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
3,141,731 vehicles 2014-06-23- Defect
- This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other…
- Consequence
- If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
SEAT BELTS:FRONT:RETRACTOR
269,169 vehicles 2002-09-05- Defect
- Certain passenger vehicles contain driver and front passenger lap and/or shoulder belt retractors that may not remain locked up as designed during a crash in which the belt pretensioners deploy.
- Consequence
- In such a crash, this could result in an increase in injury for that occupant.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a retainer kit in the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioner. Owner notification began january 31, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact cadillac at 1-800-458-8006.
SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
116,682 vehicles 2000-10-30- Defect
- Vehicle description: passenger vehicles, hearse, and limousines. Some of these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of fmvss no. 209, "seat belt assemblies." these vehicles have seat belts that may not meet the 30-pound push button release effort requirement of the standard.
- Consequence
- High release efforts could make it more difficult for a crash victim to release the belt and exit the vehicle.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the seat belts and, if necessary, modify the latch plates or replace the retractor. Dealers will also add "snap on" latch clips to eliminate the potential of inverted latch plate insertion. Owner notification is being conducted in phases. The first phase began may 29, 2001, and the second phase began july 6, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact cadillac at 1-800-458-8006.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS
8,132 vehicles 2000-04-17- Defect
- Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Some of these vehicles have internal fluid leaks in the brake hydraulic control unit.
- Consequence
- When the rear brake proportioning, antilock brake, traction control, or stability control feature is activated in some driving situations, the feature may not perform as designed.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect the ABS hydraulic modulator unit and if necessary, replace the hydraulic modulator.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
61 vehicles 2000-01-26- Defect
- Vehicle description: limousines. During normal engine roll, the plastic end fitting of the cruise control cable could contact the brake master cylinder and fracture. This does not meet the requirements of fmvss no. 124, "accelerator control systems."
- Consequence
- The fracture could prevent full closing of the throttle and cause a small increase in engine RPM in drive with the brake applied.
- Remedy
- Dealers will install a new cruise control bracket and, if necessary, will replace the cruise control cable.
Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

How 2000 compares with the other years
High risk for a 2000 — 161st riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 60 and 2000 worst at 67, with 2000 itself at 67.
If the model year is negotiable, 1997, 2004, 2005, 1996, 1999 and 1998 score lower than 2000 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2000–2005 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 60 and 2000 the weakest at 67.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2000-2005 generation, 2004 Cadillac Deville scores best at 60 and 2000 Cadillac Deville worst at 67.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other engine problem from about 26k, other electrical problem from about 57k and other visibility problem from about 64k.
On a 2000 Cadillac Deville with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other engine problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
Where these figures stop being useful
312 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 312 reports, 154 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 49% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2000 Cadillac Deville?
The most-reported failures are other electrical problem (40 reports, median 85,000 miles), other engine problem (39 reports, median 45,000 miles) and other visibility problem (21 reports, median 70,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2000 Cadillac Deville problems start?
Other engine problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 45,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 25,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 65,000 miles.
Is the 2000 Cadillac Deville reliable?
It scores 67 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 161st riskiest of the 327 2000 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2000 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Cadillac Deville is best?
Within the 2000–2005 generation, 2004 scores best at 60 out of 100 and 2000 worst at 67. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
