2002 Cadillac Deville: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2002 Cadillac Deville

On the 2002 Cadillac Deville, the failure owners report most often is other electrical problem, and the reports cluster around 50,000 miles. The earliest to appear is loss of braking, reported by a median of 30,000 miles. Overall it scores 66 out of 100, high risk for a 2002.

High risk for a 2002 — 208th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. 237 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

The failures owners actually file about

Owners have reported 48 named failure modes on the 2002 Cadillac Deville, and the three most-reported carry 27% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Other electrical problem leads with 27 reports, about 0.3 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 17k to 145,000 miles.

Other engine problem follows with 25 reports, usually reported between 16k to 75,000 miles.

Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault follows with 11 reports, median 100,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into engine (48), electrical (41) and airbag (18).

The mileage the reports cluster at

158 of the reports on the 2002 Cadillac Deville came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 64,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 39% by 50,000 miles, 70% by 100,000 miles and 85% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 8 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 30,000 and 40,000 miles, which alone holds 12% of the dated reports.

31% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: loss of braking around 32k, other electrical problem around 48k, other engine problem around 55k and stalling while driving around 180k.

How bad it is when it goes

Across the named modes, 23 mention a crash, 2 a fire, 11 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.03, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, other engine problem at $300–$4,000, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600 and other wheel or tire problem at $200–$1,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

26% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2002 Cadillac Deville draws about 2.6 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 75th percentile of complaint rates among 2002 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 89,723 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2002 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

1. (a) my cadillac (dhs-2002) operates in a dangerous and defective manner that could cause accidents. I have had the vehicle serviced no less than 16 times to fix equipment failures, including those which could be major safety issues, to no avail. (b) the airbag warning light has come on two separate occasions, though the bag never deployed. (c) the vehicle suddenly stalled when making turns. 2. (a) my vehicle contains "automatic rain sensors" for its windshield wipers. The wipers come on violently (highest level), even when not turned on, and though it is not raining. The danger is sudden distraction, which could easily cause an accident when merging with traffic and in other dangerous driving situations. They also come on suddenly when passing radio towers. The date set forth below is the first incident; it continues to happen. (b) the airbag warning light creates fear in the driver, as we are unsure as to if and when the airbag will deploy. If it where to deploy erroneously while we were driving, the results could be catastrophic. (c) on two occasions, while making turns in traffic, the vehicle stalled, which could have LED to…

Recalls on the 2002 model year

NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2002 Cadillac Deville, affecting an estimated 176,316 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover electrical system:ignition, fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly, seat belts:front:retractor and air bags:frontal. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

3,141,731 vehicles 2014-06-23
Defect
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other…
Consequence
If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

102,212 vehicles 2003-07-01
Defect
On certain cadillac deville and seville passenger vehicles, funeral coaches, and limousines equipped with a v8 (4.6l) engine, oldsmobile aurora passenger vehicles equipped with a v8 (4.0l ) engine, and pontiac bonneville ssei passenger vehicles equipped with a supercharged v6 (3.8l) engine, the fuel tank pressure sensors are unusually susceptible to malfunctions. If the sensor malfunctions, excessive vacuum can be applied during self-diagnostic testing.
Consequence
Fuel system components can be damaged and fuel can leak from the vehicle when it is refueled. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel tank pressure sensor. Owner notification began on october 17, 2003. Owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339; oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

269,169 vehicles 2002-09-05
Defect
Certain passenger vehicles contain driver and front passenger lap and/or shoulder belt retractors that may not remain locked up as designed during a crash in which the belt pretensioners deploy.
Consequence
In such a crash, this could result in an increase in injury for that occupant.
Remedy
Dealers will install a retainer kit in the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioner. Owner notification began january 31, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact cadillac at 1-800-458-8006.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

133,221 vehicles 2002-08-09
Defect
Certain passenger, mini vans, and sport utility vehicles have an air bag inflator on the driver's side that could fracture at a weld during a deployment.
Consequence
Pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants and the air bag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the driver.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect, and replace, if necessary, the air bag module assembly on the driver's side. Owner notification began august 15, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact buick at 1-800-521-7300, cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, gmc at 1-800-462-8782, oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.

STEERING:GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)

249 vehicles 2002-03-06
Defect
Certain passenger vehicles were built with missing or under-torqued steering gear attachment bolts. If a bolt is missing, the driver may notice uneven steering response or unusual noises during turns.
Consequence
If the left bolt is missing and the right mounting strap fails, steering control is lost and a vehicle crash could result.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the vehicles for presence and proper torque of both steering gear bolts. Owner notification began april 5, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact buick at 1-800-521-7300 or cadillac at 1-800-458-8006.

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

High risk for a 2002 — 208th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 10 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 60 and 2000 worst at 67, with 2002 itself at 66.

If the model year is negotiable, 1997, 2004, 2005, 1996, 1999 and 1998 score lower than 2002 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2000–2005 generation specifically, 2004 is the strongest year at 60 and 2000 the weakest at 67.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2000-2005 generation, 2004 Cadillac Deville scores best at 60 and 2000 Cadillac Deville worst at 67.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other engine problem from about 16k, other electrical problem from about 17k, loss of braking from about 26k and stalling while driving from about 139k.

On a 2002 Cadillac Deville with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other engine problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

The limits of complaint data

237 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 237 reports, 158 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 67% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2002 Cadillac Deville?

The most-reported failures are other electrical problem (27 reports, median 50,000 miles), other engine problem (25 reports, median 55,000 miles) and airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault (11 reports, median 100,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2002 Cadillac Deville problems start?

Loss of braking is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 30,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 25,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 64,000 miles.

Is the 2002 Cadillac Deville reliable?

It scores 66 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 208th riskiest of the 329 2002 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2002 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Cadillac Deville is best?

Within the 2000–2005 generation, 2004 scores best at 60 out of 100 and 2000 worst at 67. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
