2013 Subaru Wrx: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2013 Subaru Wrx
On the 2013 Subaru Wrx, the failure owners report most often is manual clutch or hydraulics failure, with 3 reports on file. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 30,000 miles.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 4 named failure modes on the 2013 Subaru Wrx, and the three most-reported carry 82% of everything filed, so the trouble here is concentrated rather than scattered.
Manual clutch or hydraulics failure leads with 3 reports and about 0.1 per 1,000 vehicles.
Differential or transfer case failure follows with 3 reports, median 30,000 miles.
Other powertrain problem follows with 3 reports, median 10,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into transmission (6), drivetrain (3) and brakes (2).
When these failures get reported
11 of the reports on the 2013 Subaru Wrx came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 30,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 73% by 50,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 36% of the dated reports.
73% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 1 mentions a crash. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.82, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: manual clutch or hydraulics failure at $900–$2,800, differential or transfer case failure at $900–$4,200, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500 and other brake problem at $300–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
82% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures, so more than half of what owners complained about here is expensive.
Every reported failure mode
| Failure mode | System | Reports | With reading | 25th | Median | 75th | Per 1,000 | Typical repair | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual clutch or hydraulics failure | transmission | 3 | 3 | — | 60k | — | 0.1 | $900–$2,800 | Moderate |
| Differential or transfer case failure | drivetrain | 3 | 3 | — | 30k | — | 0.1 | $900–$4,200 | High |
| Other powertrain problem | transmission | 3 | 3 | — | 8k | — | 0.1 | $400–$4,500 | High |
| Other brake problem | brakes | 2 | 2 | — | 9k | — | 0.0 | $300–$1,800 | High |
Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2013 Subaru Wrx draws about 0.2 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 72nd percentile of complaint rates among 2013 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 54,313 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2013 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Manual clutch or hydraulics failure
Brand new off the lot clutch failed after 500 miles. Replaced at no cost, but dealer accused 76-year-old driver of burning rubber. Second clutch good, but still engages very high and quick. Frequent stalls result.
The clutch pedal on my 2013 wrx makes a loud creaking noise every time it's depressed. When I investigated the noise, I noticed that the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly (attached to the forward firewall) shifts approx 1/4 inch every time the clutch pedal is depressed. I found that the three spot welds securing the clutch pedal bracket to the forward firewall could be broken. From the outside of the firewall, just under the windshield wipers, I saw the spot welds pulling away from the firewall every time the clutch pedal was depressed. This allows the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly to move, causing the creaking noise. If the bracket completely separates from the firewall, the clutch may become completely inoperative - especially dangerous while driving. I have also read online that this manufacturing defect can also cause your clutch to go out quicker. The firewall needs to be re-welded and reinforced and a new clutch needs to be installed. Differential or transfer case failure
I purchased a my 2013 wrx with only 7miles on it and after the 'break-in" period of 1000 miles the engine through a connecting rod. The engine was replaced under warranty. Granted the effort to have soa take care this major failure was painful. At mile 29k this past may. I heard a faint knocking/ticking while on the highway. After 20 mins the noise got louder, by the time I was home it sounded like marbles were in my engine. The dealer had to do "tear-down" and told me the engine failed and had to be replaced, they then told me that the clutch was "abused' and had to be replaced. They wanted me to pay for this repair, which I thought was ridiculous( I am positive that something from the engine caused the damage) then they told me the AWD transfer case had to be replaced!!.all in all, a new engine, turbo, clutch and transfer case had to be replaced. This car has no modification and is driven minimally. Not happy with how this event unfolded with soa. 2 failed engines in 2 year.

Other powertrain problem
The clutch firewall welds have broken loose, causing the clutch to feel soft and flex. Over time this will become a catastrophic failure resulting in an inoperable transmission. *tr
While idling without car in gear or clutch engaged, hot smell noted. Intermittent issue until for about 18 months and 25,000 miles until constant burning smell as well as new-onset severe clutch slippage. No racing or launching, only easy driving, with majority highway miles. Appears to be burnt clutch with flywheel damage possible. This began with the car new and while only highway miles. It was initially explained away as an assembly coating cooking off and normal and to be expected. It now is unsafe to drive on the highway due to sudden loss of acceleration and minimal power. *tr
Recalls on the 2013 model year
NHTSA has issued 11 recall campaigns covering the 2013 Subaru Wrx, affecting an estimated 120,331 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module and electrical system:ignition:switch. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

- Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence
- The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy
- Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

Where 2013 sits in the model line
Across the 15 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2008 comes out best at 64 and 2022 worst at 83.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Where these figures stop being useful
11 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 11 reports, 11 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 100% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2013 Subaru Wrx?
The most-reported failures are manual clutch or hydraulics failure (3 reports, median 60,000 miles), differential or transfer case failure (3 reports, median 30,000 miles) and other powertrain problem (3 reports, median 10,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
