2013 Subaru Forester: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2013 Subaru Forester
On the 2013 Subaru Forester, the failure owners report most often is other engine problem, and the reports cluster around 95,000 miles. The earliest to appear is seat belt or retractor failure, reported by a median of 65,000 miles. Overall it scores 77 out of 100, severe risk for a 2013.
Severe risk for a 2013 — 37th riskiest of the 284 2013 vehicles we can rate. 94 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
What breaks on the 2013 Subaru Forester
Owners have reported 28 named failure modes on the 2013 Subaru Forester, and the three most-reported carry 29% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other engine problem leads with 10 reports, about 0.6 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 72k to 125,000 miles.
Seat belt or retractor failure follows with 9 reports, usually reported between 60k to 125,000 miles.
Excessive oil consumption follows with 8 reports, median 30,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into engine (26), airbag (19) and brakes (9).
At what mileage it happens
69 of the reports on the 2013 Subaru Forester came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 47,500 miles.
Cumulatively, 51% by 50,000 miles, 78% by 100,000 miles and 96% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.
The busiest stretch is between 20,000 and 30,000 miles, which alone holds 17% of the dated reports.
43% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 15 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 10 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.95, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other engine problem at $300–$4,000, seat belt or retractor failure at $200–$900, excessive oil consumption at $900–$6,500 and airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
36% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2013 Subaru Forester draws about 5.4 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 85th percentile of complaint rates among 2013 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 17,408 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2013 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other engine problem
In june while driving to la from yosemite, my oil light began flickering, engine had about 46k, then came on at times while driving from san diego to la. Subaru told me it was a faulty oil switch. Replaced with autozone ps309. Drove from denver to bismarck nd to drive my cousins kid with a tumor on his heart and spine to mayo clinic to rochester, mn for chemo 2 times to take some pressure off of the family. In the middle of south dakota, my oil light came on again. I changed the oil and filter. Oil light still on, even though totally full of oil, engine is still very hot. Did not sleep all night, worried about car. I went 35 MPH on the highway to subaru dealer in bismarck nd, and was told there is new oil sensor, no problems, drive on, would cost $175 to change sensor (my engine is still under warranty). My mileage dropped from 30 mpg to 25.5 mpg after dealership visit on way to rochester, and 27 mpg back to bismarck. Called subaru dealer, was told it was the gas I was using. Called soa, basically waste of time. Changed oil and filter again. Drove to rochester, slightly better gas mileage, low oil light was on the entire way back…
I'm sorry, but I'm sending in another incident report as I just want to amend my prior incident report # 11064585. If you are able to access that you will see that my engine failed on my 2013 subaru forrester. In the description I sent to you, I completely forgot to mention that the subaru dealership told me that it would cost between $8,000 to $12,000 to fix this problem! I have three kia's in my driveway, all with mileage over 125,000 and none of them have had this problem. I bought the subaru for their reliability and dependability. Please add this to my prior case number file. Thanks so much.
Seat belt or retractor failure
Driving down the road did not see a ups truck parked along side of. Road . Rear ended the truck had seat belt on air bag deployed and head still hit the windshield why didn't. The airbag and seat belt prevent this?

Excessive oil consumption
My car has been consuming excessive amounts of oil since I have been made aware of the problem in april of 2014 by independent mechanics. At that oil change I had about a quart of synthetic left after only 4500 miles. I took it in early because the car was riding rough and that was when they discovered the low oil level. I have come to find out there is a class action suit against subaru america over this costly problem. I'm told by subaru that after a compression test they will change the piston rings however I'm told by my mechanic that the piston rings are damaged by low oil and does not fix the problem. This complaint is prompted after I discovered the hords of complaints online regarding subaru's oil consumption problem. I feel that subaru is putting a bandaid over the problem and safety is in fact an issue as people have had complete engine failure and others have spent thousands of dollars fixing damage to other areas of the engine because of low oil. There should be a recall. *tr
Recalls on the 2013 model year
NHTSA has issued 12 recall campaigns covering the 2013 Subaru Forester, affecting an estimated 71,583 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover seat belts and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2013 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.
- Left fewer and less serious reports
- Right more, or worse
- Marker this vehicle
Better and worse years of the same car
Severe risk for a 2013 — 37th riskiest of the 284 2013 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.
Across the 29 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2000 comes out best at 61 and 2024 worst at 83, with 2013 itself at 77.
If the model year is negotiable, 2000, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2008, 2007, 2001, 2026, 2004, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2025, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2012 score lower than 2013 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2011–2013 generation specifically, 2012 is the strongest year at 74 and 2013 the weakest at 77.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2011-2013 generation, 2012 Subaru Forester scores best at 74 and 2013 Subaru Forester worst at 77.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: seat belt or retractor failure from about 60k and other engine problem from about 72k.
On a 2013 Subaru Forester with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether seat belt or retractor failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.
Where these figures stop being useful
94 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 94 reports, 69 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 73% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2013 Subaru Forester?
The most-reported failures are other engine problem (10 reports, median 95,000 miles), seat belt or retractor failure (9 reports, median 65,000 miles) and excessive oil consumption (8 reports, median 30,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
At what mileage do 2013 Subaru Forester problems start?
Seat belt or retractor failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 65,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 60,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 47,500 miles.
Is the 2013 Subaru Forester reliable?
It scores 77 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 37th riskiest of the 284 2013 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2013 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Subaru Forester is best?
Within the 2011–2013 generation, 2012 scores best at 74 out of 100 and 2013 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
