2012 Jayco White Hawk: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2012 Jayco White Hawk

Only 5 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 2012 Jayco White Hawk, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported control arm, ball joint or bushing failure.

When each failure gets reported

Median
  1. Control arm, ball joint or bushing failure 10k
  2. Alignment fault and uneven tire wear 2k
  3. Other steering problem 30
  4. Other suspension problem 10k
  5. Other speed control problem 30

Share of reports filed by each mileage

Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Mileage figures are percentiles of owner-reported readings. Click a column to sort.
Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Control arm, ball joint or bushing failure suspension 1 1 — 10k — 3.2 $400–$2,200 High
Alignment fault and uneven tire wear suspension 1 1 — 2k — 3.2 $150–$1,200 Moderate
Other steering problem steering 1 1 — 30 — 3.2 $350–$2,400 High
Other suspension problem suspension 1 1 — 10k — 3.2 $350–$2,000 Moderate
Other speed control problem adas 1 1 — 30 — 3.2 $250–$2,000 Critical

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Control arm, ball joint or bushing failure

Had to change axles on white hawk and the guy doing the work noticed the brakes were missing a bushing on the actuator arm. He said in the 15 years he has never seen this before. I had to replace the entire brake assemblies due to the omission of this part. Dexter would not reimburse me the cost of the brake assembly.

Alignment fault and uneven tire wear

I had a tire blow-out while towing my travel trailer at highway speeds in july of 2013 with less than 2,000 miles on the trailer. I changed the tire and repaired the damage to my trailer not knowing the reason for the blow-out. I had monitored my tires for the next year or so, of which I probably put another 2,000 miles on the trailer) and found that they were wearing very uneven. So much so that the outside tread of a tire would have absolutely no tread and the inside of the tire would have full tread. I started doing research on the internet regarding my trailer model and if anyone else had this same issue. I found forums with multiple individuals mentioning that they had found out that dexter axle had provided the wrong size axles to the manufacturer and that due to normal operation of the trailer, the axles could in-fact bend, permanently, and cause uneven tire wear to the point of tire-failure. I contacted jayco and dexter axle, and they informed me that this was a problem and that they have not provided a notice or recall to their customers. They simply asked me to provide the VIN on the axles, and after confirming that…

Recalls on the 2012 model year

NHTSA has issued 1 recall campaign covering the 2012 Jayco White Hawk, affecting an estimated 311 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover equipment. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Defect
Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling various 2002-2016 recreational vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V746-9524.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the…
Consequence
In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Jayco will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Every year of the Jayco White Hawk

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2012 Jayco White Hawk are control arm, ball joint or bushing failure (1 report, around 10k miles), alignment fault and uneven tire wear (1 report, around 2k miles), other steering problem (1 report, around 30 miles), other suspension problem (1 report, around 10k miles) and other speed control problem (1 report, around 30 miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
