2012 Hyundai Sonata: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2012 Hyundai Sonata
On the 2012 Hyundai Sonata, the failure owners report most often is other engine problem, and the reports cluster around 91,000 miles. The earliest to appear is other visibility problem, reported by a median of 300 miles. Overall it scores 74 out of 100, high risk for a 2012.
High risk for a 2012 — 70th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. 2,280 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 79 named failure modes on the 2012 Hyundai Sonata, and the three most-reported carry 30% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.
Other engine problem leads with 373 reports, about 1.6 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 62k to 122,000 miles.
Other steering problem follows with 188 reports, usually reported between 19k to 99,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.
Other electrical problem follows with 114 reports, usually reported between 54k to 120,000 miles. 17 of those reports mention a fire.
By system, the reports fall mostly into engine (589), steering (291) and electrical (187).
When these failures get reported
1,409 of the reports on the 2012 Hyundai Sonata came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 80,000 miles.
Cumulatively, 26% by 50,000 miles, 65% by 100,000 miles and 93% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 3 filed above the top of the chart.
The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 10% of the dated reports.
21% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.
In the order they tend to show up: other visibility problem around 290, other suspension problem around 4k, cruise control failure around 22k and other wheel or tire problem around 25k.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A further 3 reports came in above that, which is why the line stops short of the top. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

What happens when these parts fail
Across the named modes, 73 mention a crash, 158 a fire, 48 an injury and 2 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.62, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other steering problem at $350–$2,400, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000 and airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
31% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2012 Hyundai Sonata draws about 9.7 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 90th percentile of complaint rates among 2012 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 235,000 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2012 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other engine problem
When accelerating from idle, such as sitting at a stop sign, stop light, or waiting to pull out onto the highway, the engine will just start to move the car and then delay, allowing you to push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor with no response for 2-4 seconds. This happens at all times of day and weather. The only common factor is that it happens after the car has been at idle for a moment, such as coasting through a parking lot or sitting at a traffic light. It happens about every 2-4 days. Very dangerous as I have almost been hit twice now pulling out onto a highway only for the engine to stall. The engine never turns off, it just doesn't respond to the accelerator pedal. I see on the internet that this is happening to other people. *tr
Repair attempts 5; first attempt at date of incident. Driving on level three lane divided highway when the vehicle suddenly stops accelerating and exhibits a no power condition where only electrical is working. I apply acceleration up past 5000 RPM and no response. Past 6000 RPM and vehicle suddenly kicks in and out of complete shock I'm forced to pull over in nearby plaza to contact nearest dealer (in southern california @ this time, original dealer in las vegas centennial hyundai). Allen hyundai service technician agrees to keep it overnight to duplicate issue. He puts in writing next day "three no power conditions." after blaming it on the turbo and adjusting electrical sensors, I continued experiencing same problem, different places. Original dealer for some reason fails to duplicate and leaves me hopeless. No offer to trade car or take it back. Now stuck in purgatory between corporate and a malfunctioning vehicle. 2012 new off the lot se with 2.0 t. *js
Other steering problem
Vehicle pulls right. Constant correction needed when driving. The slightest amount of crown slope makes it pull to the right. Even on a flat surface like a parking lot it will drive to the right. *tr
My brand new 2012 hyundai sonata pulls hard to the right. Took it in for repair, dealer said nothing was wrong. Left the car dealership and nothing was fixed. Still pulling hard to the right. I set another appointment to take the car back in. *tr
Other electrical problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that the blue tooth device was not compatible with the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer and they advised him that his phone was not compatible. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 10. The VIN was unavilable.
The vehicle looses power while driving on the road and all the electronics shut down. I lost power steering and power brakes and could not stop the vehicle. The vehicle has an electrical problem that the service technicians can not see on the computer or figure out. First the service tech said it was a fuse not plugged in all the way then they say it was the battery.. I fear for my life in this car and will never drive it again. If I were in a cross walk I would have hit a pedestrian or I could have hit another vehicle. Luckily I was not on a high speed road or going through a toll booth or there would have been serious injuries. I cannot believe that the manufacturer feels I should drive this car. They told me it was ok before and I ended up having an accident. This car has an electronic defect. They do not put any value on lives. *tr
Recalls on the 2012 model year
NHTSA has issued 8 recall campaigns covering the 2012 Hyundai Sonata, affecting an estimated 922,139 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fitt, air bags and seat belts:front:anchorage. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
29,767 vehicles 2012-07-24- Defect
- Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Hyundai Sonata passenger cars, manufactured from January 24, 2012, through June 21, 2012. The curtain side airbags on these vehicles may inflate without deployment command due to an error during manufacturing.
- Consequence
- The curtain airbag may inflate without deployment command and increase the risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle. Additionally, an unexpected deployment would be a significant driver distraction and would limit the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Hyundai dealers will notify owners, and dealers will replace the curtain side airbags free of charge. This recall began on August 31, 2012. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.
Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.
How it ranks in the 2012 field
The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.
Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Better and worse years of the same car
High risk for a 2012 — 70th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.
Across the 30 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 58 and 2022 worst at 81, with 2012 itself at 74.
If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1998, 2000, 1997, 1999, 2008, 2007, 2001, 2004, 2025, 2024, 2006, 2010, 2002, 2003 and 2009 score lower than 2012 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.
Within the 2011–2019 generation specifically, 2014 is the strongest year at 72 and 2015 the weakest at 79.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2011-2019 generation, 2014 Hyundai Sonata scores best at 72 and 2015 Hyundai Sonata worst at 79.
Where to spend the inspection money
The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other visibility problem from about 22, other suspension problem from about 125, cruise control failure from about 12k and other wheel or tire problem from about 14k.
On a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other visibility problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.
None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.
Where these figures stop being useful
2,280 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 2,280 reports, 1,409 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 62% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2012 Hyundai Sonata?
The most-reported failures are other engine problem (373 reports, median 91,000 miles), other steering problem (188 reports, median 68,000 miles) and other electrical problem (114 reports, median 85,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

It scores 74 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 70th riskiest of the 271 2012 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2012 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.
Which year of the Hyundai Sonata is best?
Within the 2011–2019 generation, 2014 scores best at 72 out of 100 and 2015 worst at 79. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
