2003 Hyundai Sonata: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

On the 2003 Hyundai Sonata, the failure owners report most often is other body or interior problem, and the reports cluster around 72,500 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 71,000 miles. Overall it scores 68 out of 100, high risk for a 2003.

High risk for a 2003 — 163rd riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. 249 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 42 named failure modes on the 2003 Hyundai Sonata, and the three most-reported carry 30% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Other body or interior problem leads with 39 reports, about 0.9 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 49k to 122,500 miles.

Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault follows with 19 reports, usually reported between 63k to 115,000 miles.

Fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure follows with 16 reports, usually reported between 106k to 150,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into body (46), airbag (29) and fuel (26).

The mileage the reports cluster at

183 of the reports on the 2003 Hyundai Sonata came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 71,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 34% by 50,000 miles, 64% by 100,000 miles and 89% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 1 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.

24% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: other body or interior problem around 71k, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault around 87k, control arm, ball joint or bushing failure around 117k and fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure around 142k.

How bad it is when it goes

Across the named modes, 19 mention a crash, 2 a fire and 28 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.26, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600, fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure at $250–$1,800 and control arm, ball joint or bushing failure at $400–$2,200. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

15% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2003 Hyundai Sonata draws about 5.5 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 82nd percentile of complaint rates among 2003 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 45,675 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2003 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other body or interior problem

My car door caught on fire while I was driving. The insurance adjuster and the body repair technician both concluded after investigation that the fire appeared to be caused by a faulty door actuator. The dealer refused to correct the problem or even acknowledge or investigate the conclusions. I had to repair the problem out of my pocket. Nothing has been done to correct the failure by the dealer. *jb

2003 hyundai sonata 4 door sedan. Chrome is peeling from metal interior door handles at random such that passenger or driver will grasp handle to open door and several lacerations to hands and fingers will result. Lacerations are deep enough to release blood. I was a driver and passenger on separate occasions in same vehicle and cut right and left hands on both interior door handles. Upon first encountering peeling chrome on drivers side handle, the vehicle was returned to hyundai dealership at 3675 sheridan drive amherst, new york (716) 835-8500. Said dealership replaced the driver side handle but did not replace any others. Subsequently, when opening the passenger side door on august 13, 2006, I cut my right hand in several locations resulting in a release of blood. My wife had also cut her hand on the driver side handle. Apparently hyundai is aware of this issue which is a safety related manufacturing defect resulting from a defective plating / cleaning process prior to plating. Hyundai however, has not issued a voluntary recall of all vehicles for this reason. Plating defects such as this are process related and will be…

Dt: the vehicle is a 2003 hyundai sonata. The cruise control will not hold. Consumer will set it for 70 MPH on the interstate, and it allowed the vehicle to go up to 85 MPH before the consumer noticed it. The speed increased gradually, which was why the consumer did not notice it at first. This problem occurred at least 6 times, and always on a level road. It happened in various conditions, and at a variety of speeds. Consumer contacted the dealer, who told him he was not allowed to replace it. When contacting the manufacturer, they told him that they would not replace it. The dealer told the consumer that it was normal for the cruise control to be off by 5 MPH +/-. The consumer mechanic to him that his vehicle's cruise control was off by 7 MPH below the set speed. The dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem, therefore they have been unable to fix it. This was the only safety issue the consume has with this vehicle. *ak the air bag light illuminated and the consumer had problems with the vehicle's headlight. The dealer repaired both problems. *nm

Fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that when attempting to refuel the vehicle, gasoline would spew back out from the filer neck and onto the ground. She was able to fuel small amounts at a given time however, it would take more than thirty minutes to fill the fuel tank to capacity. The vehicle was taken to the dealer in 2005 where they performed repairs under NHTSA campaign id number: 04v178000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly) however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was advised of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not further repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 160,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that while refueling, fuel would spill out from the filler neck. The failure would occur even if the fuel tank was completely empty. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the fuel lines were too small to allow the fuel to enter the fuel tank. As a result, the fuel system would need to be rebuilt. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 94,000.

Recalls on the 2003 model year

NHTSA has issued 6 recall campaigns covering the 2003 Hyundai Sonata, affecting an estimated 96,431 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch, suspension and fuel system, gasoline:storage. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH

82 vehicles 2009-08-07
Defect
Hyundai is recalling 82 model year 2002-2003 sonata vehicles. Repeated use of the interior door handle may cause wear of the chrome plating. If the top edge of the handle has very thin chrome plating that portion of the plating may wear away more easily than more thickly plated areas as the door handle is used. The worn chrome plating on the upper edge of the handle may result in a crack or separation between the chrome plating on the inboard and outboard surfaces of the handle, which may form a sharp edge.
Consequence
A sharp edge could lacerate or otherwise injure a vehicle occupant.
Remedy
Dealers will repair the chrome plated interior door handle free of charge. The recall began on september 16, 2009. Owners may contact hyundai of puerto rico at 1-787-999-3333.

Defect
Hyundai is recalling 188,282 my 2001-2004 sonata and my 2001-2004 xg300 and xg350 vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. Road salt applied in these jurisdictions during the winter months may result in progressive, internal corrosion of the front sub-frame on the vehicles, and may result in thinning…
Consequence
If that happens, the vehicle may lose drive power to the wheels, and the front wheel may make contact with the fender or wheel well, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will measure the thickness of the front sub-frame and inspect the front sub-frame for corrosion damage and, if necessary, the front sub-frame will be replaced with a new sub-frame that incorporates additional holes in the upper and lower panels. If the front sub-frame does not require replacement, the dealer will add drainage holes to the sub-frame and will treat the sub-frame with rust-proofing material to stop the corrosion process. This procedure will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during april 2009. Owners may contact the hyundai…

8,315 vehicles 2003-03-17
Defect
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a traction control system (tcs), if the t125/70d-15 compact spare tire is installed on a front wheel position, the tcs may inadvertently activate beginning at speeds of 20 MPH.
Consequence
Inadvertent activation of the tcs will cause automatic application of the brake at the wheel where the compact spare tire is installed. Inadvertent brake application could cause overheating and damage to the brake, and may prevent the vehicle from being driven at speeds above 20 MPH, which could result in a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the spare tire with a new larger diameter t125/80r-15 compact spare tire and a new tire pressure label will be installed on the driver's door to provide information applicable to the t125/80r-15 compact spare tire. The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2003 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

How 2003 compares with the other years

High risk for a 2003 — 163rd riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.

Across the 30 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1996 comes out best at 58 and 2022 worst at 81, with 2003 itself at 68.

If the model year is negotiable, 1996, 1998, 2000, 1997, 1999 and 2008 score lower than 2003 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 1999–2005 generation specifically, 2000 is the strongest year at 62 and 2005 the weakest at 72.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 1999-2005 generation, 2000 Hyundai Sonata scores best at 62 and 2005 Hyundai Sonata worst at 72.

What to look at before buying one

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other body or interior problem from about 49k, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault from about 63k, control arm, ball joint or bushing failure from about 82k and fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure from about 106k.

On a 2003 Hyundai Sonata with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other body or interior problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

The limits of complaint data

249 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 249 reports, 183 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 73% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2003 Hyundai Sonata?

The most-reported failures are other body or interior problem (39 reports, median 72,500 miles), airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault (19 reports, median 85,000 miles) and fuel tank, filler or evap failure (16 reports, median 140,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2003 Hyundai Sonata problems start?

Other body or interior problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 72,500 miles and a quarter of reports before 50,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 71,000 miles.

Is the 2003 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

It scores 68 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 163rd riskiest of the 330 2003 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2003 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Hyundai Sonata is best?

Within the 1999–2005 generation, 2000 scores best at 62 out of 100 and 2005 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
