Other engine problem

While driving, the vehicle surged. The consumer would smelled gas fumes inside the vehicle. The dealership was aware of the problem, but did not resolve it. *ak the turbo would not turn on and would not go over 3500 RPM's and there was a flutter type of sound coming from the driver's side rear quarter panel when the A/C was on only by the rear A/C controller. *sc

The ep and EGR sensors kept going out. When this happened the vehicle will run, but will not get any power, similar to stalling. This occurred three times, dealer continued to service the vehicle, and the problems came back.*ak

While driving 35 MPH, a fire started under the hood. Consumer managed to pull over , and put out the fire. Had the vehicle towed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford excursion. While driving between 25 and 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle also failed to accelerate when the pedal was depressed. After being parked for 3-4 hours, the vehicle would operate normally for thirty minutes before the stalling began. The check engine light illuminated after the failure, but dimmed when the vehicle was restarted. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer twice and to a mechanic another two times. On one occasion, he was informed that the fuel filter was clogged. Nhtsa campaign id number 05v270000 (electrical system:wiring) was referenced. The current mileage was 75,100 and failure mileage was 68,000.

Cruise control failure

Purchased new 2004 ford excursion on 3/9/2004. Within a month we discovered a problem with the cruise control. When going down hill, the unit would fail to re-engage as it started back up the hill. Sometimes it would re-engage with a massive surge of engine. Once the engine totally stalled forcing us to fight the vehicle off the road and out of the flow of traffic. After three returns to the dealership, they finally admitted that there is a known defect and ford is working on determining a fix. We have been calling and waiting since april, 2004 to have this repaired. In the meantime, we do not dare use the cruise control for fear of another stall in heavy traffic. We have continually called the dealership and ford motor (reference number 1684711834). Each time we call, they ask the same questions over and over and have yet to tell us an estimated date for a fix. (note in the number of failures below, this is a best guess as it happens every time we go down/up a steep hill...we've stopped using the cruise control because of this...also the incident date is best guess as to when it first started happening.*ak

Recalls on the 2004 model year

NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns covering the 2004 Ford Excursion, affecting an estimated 13,420 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

Ford is recalling certain model year 2011 ranger trucks built from january 25, 2011, through april 25, 2011 at the twin cities assembly plant, and service parts distributed to dealers for certain 2004 through 2011 model year ranger trucks, 2002 through 2005 model year excursion vehicles, and 2002 through 2007 model year f-250, f-350, f-450, and f-550 trucks for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment." the multi-function switch was shipped with a subcomponent (slider)…
Consequence
Non-functioning lights could increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the switches free of charge. The safety recall began on august 15, 2011. Owners may contact ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332.

Defect
Certain pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans equipped with 6.0l diesel engines may experience stalling without warning while driving and may or may not restart.
Consequence
Should the engine stall, a vehicle crash could occur.
Remedy
Dealers will upgrade the fuel injection control module (ficm) wire harness or replaced, and/or have a new injection control pressure (icp)) sensor connector installed free of charge. The recall began on july 22, 2005. Owners may contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.
