How bad it is when it goes

Across the named modes, 45 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 17 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.61, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other steering problem at $350–$2,400, tail light, brake light or signal failure at $100–$900, steering rack, gear or tie rod failure at $700–$2,600 and other suspension problem at $350–$2,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

7% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 draws about 14 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 91st percentile of complaint rates among 2006 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 64,559 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2006 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other steering problem

I own a 2006 dodge 1 ton crew cab truck. During the month of december I started to experience wheel bouncing when a hit a bump at speeds over 60 miles per hour. I contact the local dodge dealer, they look at it and said nothing was wrong. On december 20, 2006 I hit a bump on the interstate at nearly 70 miles per hour that put my truck into an uncontrollable shake, nearly hit the car next to me and slide sideways to a stop. Very lucky that others were not hit or that I did not roll. I had the truck towed to springfield, mo and took it to central dodge. They immediately said it was the front steering stabilizer shock and that they have had numerous other incidents involving this part without even looking at the truck. They change the part and the problem is fixed, but something was troubling as the tech said he would replace it with something stiffer and stronger as they can only replace it with a factory part that he said has been a problem and is not big enough. *nm

My 2006 dodge ram 2500 had bad tie rods, track bar and steering damper with less than 36000 miles on it. At the point it became apparent, the truck became very unstable and hard to keep on the road. I took it to modica brothers in my town to have it fixed because any dealerships were at least an hour from me and I felt I needed my vehicle fixed as soon as possible. After getting the truck repaired it was brought to my attention that the truck was still covered under warranty. I have contacted dodge concerning this and was denied coverage because I did not have the truck towed and go to a dodge dealership to have the truck repaired. *tr

Steering rack, gear or tie rod failure

I own a 2006 dodge ram 2500 that may be affected by a recall on 2008 model trucks. The recall number from chrysler is h36 and the NHTSA campaign id number is 09v005000. I just took my truck in for inspection and this joint on the pitman arm failed for too much play. We called to get the replacement part and were told it is no longer available because the part has been redesigned. You now have to replace multiple components because of this redesign which was initiated from the recall for 2008 trucks and it will cost you approximately $550 for the replacement parts. It will cost you this just for parts, if you truck is out of warranty. My truck has 50,170 miles on it which is over the 36,000 mile warranty. However, I should not have to pay $600+ because one joint is bad. If these parts were redesigned for safety reasons then this should be covered in the recall. I have confirmed with area dealers and all 2500 series dodge rams use this recalled linkage from 2003-2008. They all call for the same part number. Also, this was not a problem with just a certain 'batch' of parts. If so, chrysler would have only recalled the truck with the…

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500 mega cab. While driving at a low speed the right front axle failed. The mechanic discovered that the right front passenger side tie rod had fractured. The manufacturer stated that they could not sell him the part separately because the tie rod was re-designed and that it was sold as a unit. He contacted the dealer, and he was advised that the part was a common failure due to s manufacturers defect. The vehicle was repaired. The current and the failure mileages were 59,000.

Recalls on the 2006 model year

NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500, affecting an estimated 196,181 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module, air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, electrical system:ignition:switch and steering:linkages:tie rod assembly. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

How 2006 compares with the other years

High risk for a 2006 — 203rd riskiest of the 343 2006 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 17 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2003 comes out best at 66 and 2010 worst at 73, with 2006 itself at 67.

No other year of this model scores meaningfully better than 2006, so if this generation is what you want, the year is not the lever.

Within the 2003–2006 generation specifically, 2003 is the strongest year at 66 and 2004 the weakest at 72.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2003-2006 generation, 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 scores best at 66 and 2004 Dodge RAM 2500 worst at 72.

What to look at before buying one

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other engine problem from about 8k, other powertrain problem from about 13k, other fuel system problem from about 19k and blower motor or climate control failure from about 39k.

On a 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other engine problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

The limits of complaint data

905 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 905 reports, 707 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 78% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500?

The most-reported failures are other steering problem (138 reports, median 75,000 miles), tail light, brake light or signal failure (121 reports, median 68,000 miles) and steering rack, gear or tie rod failure (106 reports, median 97,500 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 problems start?

Blower motor or climate control failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 50,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 40,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 78,000 miles.

Is the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 reliable?

It scores 67 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 203rd riskiest of the 343 2006 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2006 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Dodge RAM 2500 is best?

Within the 2003–2006 generation, 2003 scores best at 66 out of 100 and 2004 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
