2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van
On the 2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van, the failure owners report most often is seat belt or retractor failure, with 2 reports on file. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 80,000 miles.
The failures owners actually file about
Owners have reported 8 named failure modes on the 2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van, and the three most-reported carry 50% of everything filed.
Seat belt or retractor failure leads with 2 reports.
Other body or interior problem follows with 2 reports, median 80,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.
Oil leak follows with 1 report, median 50,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into body (3), airbag (2) and engine (1).
The mileage the reports cluster at
Too few of the reports on this year carry an odometer reading to describe the timing: 4 of them do. The mileages quoted elsewhere on this page come from the modes that have enough of them.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Severity, and what it costs
Across the named modes, 1 a fire and 2 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 5.50, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: seat belt or retractor failure at $200–$900, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000, oil leak at $250–$2,200 and fuel tank, filler or EVAP failure at $250–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
10% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

No fleet-size estimate is available for this year, so only raw counts are shown. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
There is no usable estimate of how many 2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van were built, so this page reports counts and not rates. 10 reports on a car that sold in millions and 10 on a car that sold in thousands are not the same finding, and without a denominator there is no honest way to say which this is.
No fleet-size estimate is available for this year, so only raw counts are shown.
What owners wrote
Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.
Other body or interior problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet 1500 conversion van.(n/a) the contact stated while driving at approximately 50 MPH, the driver seat independently became extremely hot and scorched the seat. The dealer advised that the failure was caused by an electrical shortage. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was not available. The current and failure mileages were approximately 80,000.
Oil leak
We have a 2003 chevrolet venture van v6 3.4l, odometer-49698. Vehicle made an odd sound when starting. This sound happened suddenly. We took it to the closest automotive repair shop their computer indicated a misfire code and they suggested changing the plugs. We opted to take the van to our mechanic. They checked the plugs and they looked brand new and were in good condition. The following description is straight from the service advisor of the automotive shop : one cylinder only has 35 psi and there is a tapping noise in the top half of the engine. Will need to tear the upper end down for inspection (upper and lower intakes and the valve cover gasket). The rear cylinder head on the #3 cylinder, the studs that hold the rocker arms have pulled out of the head. The machine shop found the threads for the rocker arm studs on the rear cylinder head were pulling out. Had to have all the rocker arm studs holes repaired. Based on the machine shop's advice the front cylinder head was removed and to have the rocker arm stud holes inspected. They were also found to be pulling out. All stud holes on the front cylinder head were repaired…
Better and worse years of the same car
Across the 3 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 1997 comes out best at 62 and 1999 worst at 73.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
The limits of complaint data
10 owner reports; no fleet size estimate, so rates are unavailable. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 10 reports, 4 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 40% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2003 Chevrolet Chevy Van?
The most-reported failures are seat belt or retractor failure (2 reports), other body or interior problem (2 reports, median 80,000 miles) and oil leak (1 report, median 50,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
