2016 Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2016 Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen

Only 6 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 2016 Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported shifter, linkage or stuck-in-park failure.

When each failure gets reported

  2. Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault 40k
  3. Other electrical problem
    no odometer readings given

How reports accumulate

Share of reports filed by each mileage

Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

No fleet-size estimate is available for this year, so only raw counts are shown. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

What owners wrote

Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.

Shifter, linkage or stuck-in-park failure

Metal trim on the bezel of the gear selector (at the base) has peeled off and cracked. It is very sharp and I cut my hand. It appears that this is a common issue with cars on this platform (golf, gti, golf sportwagen).

36,000 miles NHTSA complaint 1483231 filed 2018-07-16

Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault

Was hit in the rear, other driver was traveling around 55 MPH as I was slowing down (around 5 MPH) turning right from a highway onto another road. Impact was enough to crush the rear floor pan and bend the frame. I smelled and saw smoke coming from the steering column after the impact. None of the airbags in the whole car went off but the airbag light came on and vehicle status says "error: airbag".

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2016 Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen are shifter, linkage or stuck-in-park failure (1 report, around 36k miles), airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault (1 report, around 40k miles), other electrical problem (1 report), other steering problem (1 report) and other suspension problem (1 report, around 59k miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
