What happens when these parts fail

Across the named modes, 2 mention a crash, 1 a fire and 2 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.28, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500, other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000 and timing chain, belt or tensioner failure at $1,200–$4,500. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

25% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle draws about 5.0 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 81st percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 15,656 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 volkswagen beetle convertible. The contact stated once the the driver side seat belt was buckled the the air bag light would remain illuminated. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who advised her that the seat belt sensor was not reading correctly therefore, the air bag light would not detect it. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 62,000. Updated 5/2/11 *cn updated 05/12/11

Air bag light illuminated for passenger seat (indicating that air bag not working and problem). Dealer states that the air bag module and seat belt buckle need to be replaced. The air bag module and seat belt buckle should not have to be replaced on a one owner vehicle with less than 50,000 miles. *tr

Other powertrain problem

Car sporadically looses power while attempting to suddenly accelerate after momentarily lifting foot off gas peddle. Most instances occur while changing lanes on the highway or attempting to make a normal left hand turn. Example: going 60 MPH, lift foot off peddle to slow down due to car in front of me, see opening in the lane to my right, turn wheel slightly to change lanes, floor it only to find I have no power with other car barreling down on me. This has happened over a dozen times but I am unable to duplicate it at will.

Vw has a history of automatic transmission issues with several of their cars. Our car started experiencing issues with shifting up and down. We have experienced this issue for about 30k miles ago. It has progressively gotten worse. As we starting investigating if there were others experiencing they same issue, we have learned that vw knows of this problem and has offer to many to replace the valve body of the transmission, which has been determined to be the issue. We contacted vw today to see if they would do the same for our vw and they said no. We are looking for some help with this issue. *tr

Other body or interior problem

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 volkswagen beetle. The contact stated that the vehicle had an electrical system failure on the driver's side. On occasion, several attempts were needed in order to start the vehicle. It was brought to the dealer , north point volkswagen, but they could not locate the cause of the failure. The contact also stated that the trunk fails to open properly. When the key or interior trunk release latch was used, the trunk opened, but then immediately closed. The dealer replaced the trunk actuator, struts, and locks, but the contact still continued to experience a failure with the trunk. Also, the contact stated that the radio activated while the vehicle's doors were ajar and the keywas not in the ignition. The dashboard would become hot as well. These failures would last approximately one hour. The current and failure mileage were 17,000.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 volkswagen beetle. While the contact was driving approximately 30 MPH the driver side window made a loud squeaky noise when in activation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on five separate occasions where the mechanic lubed the window glass track inside of the door panel. In addition, the driver side window mechanism and exterior side view mirrors control mechanism malfunctioned and were replaced. The exterior paint on the driver side door exhibited severe chipping. Also, the contact stated water would leak inside the driver side window door panel causing the window glass to fog. The failure mileage was approximately 5. Updated 10/27/10. *lj

Recalls on the 2007 model year

NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle, affecting an estimated 24,434 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fitt and exterior lighting:brake lights:switch. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

228,236 vehicles 2010-12-10
Defect
Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 jetta, new beetle, new beetle convertible, model year 2009 jetta sportwagen and model year 2007-2009 rabbit vehicles equipped with 2.5l engines. The jetta, jetta sportwagen, and rabbit vehicles may have a small plastic tab located on the windshield washer fluid reservoir that may chafe against an underhood fuel supply line. The new beetle and the new beetle convertible vehicles may have a fastening clamp on a hydraulic hose of the power steering system that may be located in an improper position which could cause…
Consequence
If chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the underhood fuel line. Additionally, depending on the vehicle model, dealers will either remove the plastic tab from the windshield washer fluid reservoir, or inspect the position of the fastening clamp and adjust the related fastening clamp into the correct position. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before january 31, 2011. Owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

1,002,000 vehicles 2007-02-20
Defect
On certain passenger, wagon, and convertible vehicles equipped with or without cruise control, a brake light switch may malfunction if it was installed incorrectly.
Consequence
The brake lights could become inoperative, or remain on. Failure to provide the proper signal when braking could lead to a crash without warning.
Remedy
Dealers will install the newly designed brake light switch free of charge. The recall began on april 27, 2007, and will be conducted in several staggered mailings through september 21, 2007. Vehicles within the make, model, and model year of this population may be involved in either this recall or 06v-183, but not both. The remedy is the same for each recall. Volkswagen dealers will apply the remedy based on the VIN number of the vehicle. Owners may contact vw at 1-800-822-8987.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Risk score against the rest of the 2007 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Where 2007 sits in the model line

High risk for a 2007 — 224th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.

Across the 21 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2009 comes out best at 63 and 2015 worst at 76, with 2007 itself at 66.

If the model year is negotiable, 2009 scores lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2003–2010 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 63 and 2004 the weakest at 73.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2003-2010 generation, 2009 Volkswagen Beetle scores best at 63 and 2004 Volkswagen Beetle worst at 73.

Where to spend the inspection money

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other body or interior problem from about 6k and other powertrain problem from about 74k.

On a 2007 Volkswagen Beetle with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other body or interior problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

What this page cannot tell you

79 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 79 reports, 70 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 89% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle?

The most-reported failures are airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault (10 reports, median 45,000 miles), other powertrain problem (10 reports, median 90,000 miles) and other body or interior problem (9 reports, median 25,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2007 Volkswagen Beetle problems start?

Other body or interior problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 25,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 5,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 45,000 miles.

Is the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?

It scores 66 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 224th riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Volkswagen Beetle is best?

Within the 2003–2010 generation, 2009 scores best at 63 out of 100 and 2004 worst at 73. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
