2007 Subaru Impreza: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2007 Subaru Impreza

On the 2007 Subaru Impreza, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, with 28 reports on file. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 47,500 miles. Overall it scores 72 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.

High risk for a 2007 — 73rd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 84 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What breaks on the 2007 Subaru Impreza

Owners have reported 28 named failure modes on the 2007 Subaru Impreza, and the three most-reported carry 45% of everything filed.

Airbag inflator rupture leads with 28 reports and about 1.2 per 1,000 vehicles.

Other engine problem follows with 5 reports, median 110,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.

Other wheel or tire problem follows with 5 reports, median 30,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (28), engine (13) and brakes (7).

The mileage the reports cluster at

50 of the reports on the 2007 Subaru Impreza came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 47,500 miles.

Cumulatively, 56% by 50,000 miles, 78% by 100,000 miles and 98% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed.

The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 18% of the dated reports.

38% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

Severity, and what it costs

Across the named modes, 4 mention a crash, 2 a fire and 4 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 6.02, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other engine problem at $300–$4,000, other wheel or tire problem at $200–$1,500 and head gasket failure at $1,400–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

26% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Subaru Impreza draws about 3.7 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 78th percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 22,729 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture

I replaced the battery on 7/11/15. I needed a smog certificate this month for my registration renewal and my vehicle would not pass for certification. I had driven the vehicle over 700 miles after battery replacement and was told that I needed to drive it an additional 50 to 100 miles non-stop to reset the vehicle to pass the inspection. I asked at the dealership can't you reset the vehicle here so that all this driving and mileage is not required, the dealership stated no. The volkswagen have a reset button on a panel but not the subaru or any other vehicles. All vehicles should have a reset button and they should be recalled to implement this feature. All vehicles manufactured in the future should have that feature. This incident occurred 11/3/15 thru 11/5/15 having to spend $35.00 additional in gasoline and driving on the congested freeways to reset the vehicle after battery replacement. I was told that I have takata air bags in my vehicle. When will they be replaced? Thank you. I was told that I have a takata air bags in my vehicle by the manufacturer. When will they be replaced? *tr

Other engine problem

(potential for a serious incident or accident). Vehicle surges and bucks uncontrollably in all gears at low speeds, which occasionally forces the foot to depress accelerator accidentally do to violent bucking in slow traffic conditions. Other subarus in the 2.5 liter category do the same thing. I was informed that it is an inherent condition in this vehicle I must live with despite the potential for an accident. The dealer informed me that there was enough complaints on the 2006 model subaru forester experiencing this condition, that subaru of america came up with an ecu upgrade that cured the problem. I was basically told that they would keep me on record so that if and when an ecu upgrade becomes available they will contact me, but until then this is a flaw in this model I must live with. Subaru of america acknowledge the complaint and passed it on to the dealer. I have not heard anything back from subaru of america after the initial contact and the dealer said there is nothing that can currently be done. *jb

Other wheel or tire problem

The following was sent to bridgestone via email this is to inform bridgestone tire of a catastrophic sidewall blowout that occurred on a bridgestone potenza tire on july 25, 2008. The blowout occurred at the start of a cross country trip on interstate 40 heading towards memphis, tn. The car is a 2007 subaru impreza purchased new in september 2007 and had approximately 6500 miles on it at the start of the trip. The markings on the tire are as follows: bridgestone potenza p 205/55r16 89v k0350 e92adz DOT em8k jll1207 the sidewall blowout occurred to the left rear tire. Prior to the start of the trip the car had a tune-up at an authorized subaru service dealer. When the blowout occurred the car was pulled off to the side of the road and the tire was changed using the provided spare tire that comes with the car. The car was then driven to the nearest tire service company which was wal mart tire and lube in savannah, tn. Store # 0268 175 j.I. Bell lane, savannah, tn 38372. (731) 925 ' 3020. The car's official mileage as recorded on the odometer and noted on the service invoice was 6824 miles. Damage to the tire was two tears - one…

6,824 miles NHTSA complaint 685231 filed 2008-08-26

We were driving on highway 14 at about 9 pm when we heard (and felt) a loud bang and then felt the noticeable bumpiness of a flat tire. We pulled over to the side to find the front passenger side tire flat, which we proceeded to change with the spare that was supplied with the car. The car is a 2007 subaru impreza and is actually a loaner from the dealer since my car is in the shop, being repaired for the same problem for the 8th time in 2 years (separate complaint). Upon inspecting the tire the next day, it's evident that it is a blowout as it has a 4 inch slit in the sidewall and there was nothing in the road that we drove over. I have not had the tire replaced yet but the dealer is asserting that I am responsible for the tire, even though it's not my car. They did, however, offer to sell me the tire at their cost with free installation. I plan on keeping the tire when I do get it replaced, since I'm paying for it. I will be contacting bridgestone headquarters and subaru headquarters in new jersey about this incident. Tire is a bridgestone potenza re 92a, size p205/55r16 89v DOT em8k jll2407. *tr

Recalls on the 2007 model year

NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Subaru Impreza, affecting an estimated 66,027 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Risk score against the rest of the 2007 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Where 2007 sits in the model line

High risk for a 2007 — 73rd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.

Across the 27 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2015 comes out best at 65 and 2021 worst at 84, with 2007 itself at 72.

If the model year is negotiable, 2015, 2003, 2016, 2002 and 2005 score lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2002–2007 generation specifically, 2003 is the strongest year at 66 and 2007 the weakest at 72.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2002-2007 generation, 2003 Subaru Impreza scores best at 66 and 2007 Subaru Impreza worst at 72.

What this page cannot tell you

84 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 84 reports, 50 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 60% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2007 Subaru Impreza?

The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (28 reports, median 35,000 miles), other engine problem (5 reports, median 110,000 miles) and other wheel or tire problem (5 reports, median 30,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

Is the 2007 Subaru Impreza reliable?

It scores 72 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 73rd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Subaru Impreza is best?

Within the 2002–2007 generation, 2003 scores best at 66 out of 100 and 2007 worst at 72. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
