2017 RAM 3500: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2017 RAM 3500

On the 2017 RAM 3500, the failure owners report most often is ABS module or sensor failure, with 74 reports on file. The earliest to appear is other powertrain problem, reported by a median of 15,000 miles. Overall it scores 74 out of 100, high risk for a 2017.

High risk for a 2017 — 119th riskiest of the 263 2017 vehicles we can rate. 429 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 52 named failure modes on the 2017 RAM 3500, and the three most-reported carry 44% of everything filed.

ABS module or sensor failure leads with 74 reports and about 0.6 per 1,000 vehicles.

Other brake problem follows with 58 reports, usually reported between 14k to 60,000 miles.

Cruise control failure follows with 55 reports, median 120,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into brakes (146), adas (62) and electrical (35).

At what mileage it happens

126 of the reports on the 2017 RAM 3500 came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 23,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 71% by 50,000 miles, 89% by 100,000 miles and 96% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 2 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 26% of the dated reports.

63% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

In the order they tend to show up: other powertrain problem around 15k, other wheel or tire problem around 17k and other brake problem around 23k.

Severity, and what it costs

Across the named modes, 10 mention a crash and 1 a fire. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.07, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: ABS module or sensor failure at $500–$2,400, other brake problem at $300–$1,800, cruise control failure at $200–$1,400 and other engine problem at $300–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

18% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2017 RAM 3500 draws about 3.4 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 81st percentile of complaint rates among 2017 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 127,691 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2017 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other brake problem

I have a ram 3500 single rear wheel truck with integrated brake controller. It was hooked up to my 10,000# gvw 5th wheel trailer this past weekend and no matter how I set the controller, for either braking strength or trailer selection type, it provides imperceptible braking to the trailer. It nearly pushed me right through an intersection at 25 MPH because there was no braking. This occurred on a 35 MPH level grade and I was slowed at the time for an approaching red light. Truck is rated to tow much more. I disconnected factory unit and put in an aftermarket and it worked exactly as it should, which should rule out both the trailer and truck wiring as it uses the same with just an plug switched from internal brake controller to aftermarket.. I have seen many postings about this on the internet and it seems fca has a star case on this as well #s1508000014. I feel this can put any driver in a very bad or deadly situation very quickly. I had both a 2010 and a 2012 ram 3500 trucks with the same controller and towing the same trailers and there were no issues at all. I will be taking this to a dealer in about 2 weeks for testing, but…

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ram 3500. While driving with a trailer connected, the "trailer brake not connected" message illuminated. The vehicle was taken to pine belt chrysler jeep dodge ram (1400 ocean ave, route-88, lakewood, nj 08701), but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was repaired but repairs were unknown. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that he could not be reimbursed. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 69,000.

Cruise control failure

I was hauling a 15,000 lb fifth wheel with the cruise control set at about 45mph coming up to the light on hwy. 35 and hwy. 20 intersection northbound in indiana. I tapped my foot on the break to shut my cruise control off like I normally do and put my foot on the throttle to control the acceleration to the light. I realize I wasn't slowing down properly and put my foot on the brake and stood both feet on the break to try to stop to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I ended up hitting the car in front of me even with the truck and trailer brakes applied. The airbags did not go off in either vehicle. Everything went so quickly, didn't know why the truck didn't want to slow down. I have had no problem with the truck or my 2018 truck. I believe the cruise control not shutting off was the cause of the accident. I would like you to come and investigate it to see if that was the issue of the accident. I can't think of anything else that would have caused it.

Recalls on the 2017 model year

NHTSA has issued 13 recall campaigns covering the 2017 RAM 3500, affecting an estimated 468,967 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:side/window:curtain:inflator, service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electron, wheels:lugs/nuts/bolts/studs and latches/locks/linkages:tailgate:latch. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

Where 2017 sits in the model line

High risk for a 2017 — 119th riskiest of the 263 2017 vehicles we can rate. Because the ranking is against the same model year only, age cancels out of it.

Across the 14 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2023 comes out best at 66 and 2022 worst at 80, with 2017 itself at 74.

If the model year is negotiable, 2023, 2025 and 2021 score lower than 2017 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2013–2018 generation specifically, 2015 is the strongest year at 72 and 2018 the weakest at 77.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2013-2018 generation, 2015 RAM 3500 scores best at 72 and 2018 RAM 3500 worst at 77.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other powertrain problem from about 500, other wheel or tire problem from about 10k and other brake problem from about 14k.

On a 2017 RAM 3500 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other powertrain problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

The limits of complaint data

429 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 429 reports, 126 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 29% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2017 RAM 3500?

The most-reported failures are abs module or sensor failure (74 reports, median 20,000 miles), other brake problem (58 reports, median 25,000 miles) and cruise control failure (55 reports, median 120,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2017 RAM 3500 problems start?

Other powertrain problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 15,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 500 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 23,000 miles.

Is the 2017 RAM 3500 reliable?

It scores 74 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 119th riskiest of the 263 2017 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2017 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the RAM 3500 is best?

Within the 2013–2018 generation, 2015 scores best at 72 out of 100 and 2018 worst at 77. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
