2008 Mitsubishi Raider: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider
On the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, with 4 reports on file. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 60,000 miles.
What owners report breaking
Owners have reported 3 named failure modes on the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider, and the three most-reported carry 78% of everything filed, so the trouble here is concentrated rather than scattered.
Airbag inflator rupture leads with 4 reports and about 0.1 per 1,000 vehicles.
Tail light, brake light or signal failure follows with 2 reports, median 40,000 miles.
Other steering problem follows with 1 report, median 120,000 miles.
By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (4), lighting (2) and steering (1).
When these failures get reported
Too few of the reports on this year carry an odometer reading to describe the timing: 4 of them do. The mileages quoted elsewhere on this page come from the modes that have enough of them.

Severity, and what it costs
Nothing in the reports on the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider mentions a crash, a fire or an injury. That is the ordinary case and it is worth stating: most defect complaints are about a car that stopped working, not one that hurt somebody.
The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.44, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.
What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, tail light, brake light or signal failure at $100–$900 and other steering problem at $350–$2,400. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.
Every reported failure mode

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.
How often, against how many were built
Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider draws about 0.1 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 67th percentile of complaint rates among 2008 vehicles we can rate.
That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.
The working figure is 64,559 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2008 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture
Takata recall: received safety recall notice dated july 2016 re: front passenger air bag inflator, and, as instructed, contacted mitsubishi customer relations dept. To confirm my contact information and to find out when replacement part would be available. In september, called again and mmna had no projection as to time frame for parts availability. Since I am the primary driver, and rarely have passengers, the delays were tolerable. But since my wife and I are planning an approx.,1,500 mile trip to florida thanksgiving week, 11/19 to 11/26, I asked if the air bag in question could be disabled until parts are available, so that, if we encountered an accident, the front passenger would not be injured. After the customer relations representative put me on an almost interminable hold, the rep. Said no and suggested that I talk to a local mitsubishi dealer's service department, who said that, by NHTSA rules, it could not be disconnected. Today, 11/10, I again spoke to mmna, and, again, no idea of parts availability. As I related my previous conversations, the rep said that the recall notice said that no one should sit in the front…
Tail light, brake light or signal failure
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 mitsubishi raider. The contact stated that when he signaled left, the right turn signal erroneously illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the multi-function switch failed. The multi-function switch was replaced but the failure recurred. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,000 and the current mileage was 48,566.

Other steering problem
I was driving down the road when all of a sudden I had no control of my steering. I stopped and checked the reservoir and notice no fluid. I was able to make it another block and put more fluid in the steering pump. I made it home by adding more fluid. I looked under the vehicle and notice a steal line was leaking the fluid. I took the line off and notice that they had installed it at a very bad location which had cause the leak the line had rubbed against another line and had a hole in it. It appears it had been improperly placed on the vehicle., the line cannot be purchase replaced this model was discontinued in 2009. Their are no parts for this the model vehicle. I talked to dealer and he said they will haft to replaced it with a new dodge steering unit. This will cost and thousands of dollars. This is a faulty product and the dealer should replace this because of the safety issued and faulty product.
Recalls on the 2008 model year
NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns covering the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider, affecting an estimated 121,983 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.
The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module and air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.
One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

- Consequence
- These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy
- Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Chrysler will notify the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM owners. Mitsubishi owners will be notified by their company. Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S43. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V-7700.

Better and worse years of the same car
Within the 2006–2009 generation specifically, 2007 is the strongest year at 58 and 2006 the weakest at 66.
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2006-2009 generation, 2007 Mitsubishi Raider scores best at 58 and 2006 Mitsubishi Raider worst at 66.
Where these figures stop being useful
9 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.
Of those 9 reports, 4 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 44% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".
The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.
And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.
Questions this page answers
What are the most common problems with the 2008 Mitsubishi Raider?
The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (4 reports, median 80,000 miles), tail light, brake light or signal failure (2 reports, median 40,000 miles) and other steering problem (1 report, median 120,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.
Which year of the Mitsubishi Raider is best?
Within the 2006–2009 generation, 2007 scores best at 58 out of 100 and 2006 worst at 66. Same body, same engines, different luck.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
