2004 Mercury Montego: what breaks, and at what mileage
What breaks on the 2004 Mercury Montego
Only 4 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 2004 Mercury Montego, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported harsh or jerky shifting.

How reports accumulate
Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

| Liftgate, tailgate or trunk failure | body | 1 | 1 | — | 130k | — | 0.0 | $250–$1,500 | Moderate |

This year had no usable recall paperwork, so the fleet-size estimate is the median of other years of the same model. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Harsh or jerky shifting
2004 mercury mountaineer I've experienced multiple transmission problems; a hard jerking when you place it in reverse, and rough shifting while on the highway. Dealership made multiple attempts to repair, and often said they can't duplicate the problem. Also, cruise control quits working intermittently, replaced but still a problem.*ak

Liftgate, tailgate or trunk failure
Opened lift gate to remove package from trunk area, hinge broke and the lift gate fell on my husband's head. He was struck with the hitch/locking mechanism. Wondering if these lift gates issues (including those recalled for 2002 & 2003 models) have any correlation to the lift gate panels cracking from below the wiper assembly, around the logo, to the bottom of the lift gate panel. I am really struggling with the reasoning that there are not enough complaints for the 2004 model to issue a recall. Is it going to take some getting hit just right in the head and dying? There is no warning. *tr
Other wheel or tire problem
Whenever the vehicle shifted in reverse, the right rear wheel made a loud squealing noise. Vehicle was taken to the dealer on four separate occasions. Dealer informed the consumer that moisture penetrated into the wheel, and they were unable to resolve this problem. The information was sent to the manufacturer for analysis.*ak
Every year of the Mercury Montego
Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.
Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.
Within the 2004-2007 generation, 2005 Mercury Montego scores best at 66 and 2007 Mercury Montego worst at 70.
What the reports on file say
The complaints recorded against the 2004 Mercury Montego are harsh or jerky shifting (2 reports, around 12k miles), liftgate, tailgate or trunk failure (1 report, around 130k miles) and other wheel or tire problem (1 report, around 100 miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.
Why this page is short
A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.
Other years of the same model do have enough: 2005, 2006 and 2007. The mechanical parts are often shared across those years, so their pages are the better guide to what this one is likely to do, with the caveat that a shared part is not a shared production line.
Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
