2007 Kia Sorento: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2007 Kia Sorento

On the 2007 Kia Sorento, the failure owners report most often is control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure, and the reports cluster around 5,000 miles. The earliest to appear is alternator or charging system failure, reported by a median of 600 miles. Overall it scores 70 out of 100, high risk for a 2007.

High risk for a 2007 — 122nd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. 224 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

The failures owners actually file about

Owners have reported 40 named failure modes on the 2007 Kia Sorento, and the three most-reported carry 20% of everything filed, which is an unusually even spread for one model year.

Control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure leads with 22 reports, about 0.7 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 81 to 50,000 miles.

Airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault follows with 11 reports, median 75,000 miles.

Other powertrain problem follows with 11 reports, usually reported between 4k to 30,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into electrical (43), airbag (27) and adas (22).

At what mileage it happens

177 of the reports on the 2007 Kia Sorento came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 70,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 41% by 50,000 miles, 70% by 100,000 miles and 95% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 5 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 0 and 10,000 miles, which alone holds 28% of the dated reports.

37% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, which is early enough that a fair number of these cars were still under a factory warranty when the owner complained.

In the order they tend to show up: alternator or charging system failure around 600, control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure around 7k, other powertrain problem around 16k and other brake problem around 75k.

What happens when these parts fail

Across the named modes, 20 mention a crash, 8 a fire and 17 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.92, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure at $700–$3,000, airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault at $300–$1,600, other powertrain problem at $400–$4,500 and other brake problem at $300–$1,800. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

20% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2007 Kia Sorento draws about 6.9 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 84th percentile of complaint rates among 2007 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 32,679 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2007 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 kia sorento. When the passenger is in the passenger side front seat, the air bag light remains illuminated and the system indicates that the air bag is off. The dealer reprogrammed the air bag sensor; however, the failure was not corrected. The vehicle is currently at the dealer and they will replace the bottom of the passenger seat. The contact was given a 2008 sorento as a loaner vehicle and it has the same failure. The manufacturer stated that the law required them to install a new air bag system for children. They are having problems with the program and have received numerous complaints. The current mileage was 5,000 and failure mileage was 1,000. Other powertrain problem

I purchased a 2007 kia sorento on 1/6/07 from chris leith kia in wake forest, nc. Not long after I bought it, I noticed that it frequently jerked when accelerating at higher rates of speed. On 1/11/07, I took the car back to the dealer and complained of the problem. At that time they told me it was the electronic throttle body which was self adjusting ,and would fix itself as I drove it. The vehicle continued to struggle, so I took it back to kia on 3/5/07. They had the vehicle for 3 days. After correspondence with kia, I was told to come pick up the vehicle. They told me that kia was aware of the problem and that they were working on a solution. It is believed to be a software issue. As of today, 4/5/07, I still have no solution to my problem. I have been in touch with the dealer, and have been told that they are still working on a solution. I am very frustrated! A brand new vehicle should not run like this!!!*ak

I have a two wheel drive 2007 kia sorento. When I drive between 35 and 50 MPH the car begins to jerk, sometimes violently. I have taken it twice to the dealer to have it looked at. The dealer has contacted kia engineers who say that the jerking is within acceptable parameters and nothing will be done to fix the problem. They have described the problem as being called a fish bite. The invoice for service states that "this is normal tcc lock up at lower speeds low RPM in lockup." *tr

Recalls on the 2007 model year

NHTSA has issued 4 recall campaigns covering the 2007 Kia Sorento, affecting an estimated 84,077 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electron, exterior lighting:brake lights:switch and air bags:frontal:sensor/control module-inactive. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to…
Consequence
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

Where 2007 sits in the model line

High risk for a 2007 — 122nd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.

Across the 22 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2024 comes out best at 65 and 2016 worst at 80, with 2007 itself at 70.

If the model year is negotiable, 2024 and 2004 score lower than 2007 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2007–2010 generation specifically, 2009 is the strongest year at 68 and 2008 the weakest at 71.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2007-2010 generation, 2009 Kia Sorento scores best at 68 and 2008 Kia Sorento worst at 71.

Where to spend the inspection money

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure from about 81, alternator or charging system failure from about 600, other powertrain problem from about 4k and other brake problem from about 50k.

On a 2007 Kia Sorento with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether control module (ECM/PCM/BCM) failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

The limits of complaint data

224 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 224 reports, 177 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 79% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2007 Kia Sorento?

The most-reported failures are control module (ecm/pcm/bcm) failure (22 reports, median 5,000 miles), airbag warning light or occupant sensor fault (11 reports, median 75,000 miles) and other powertrain problem (11 reports, median 15,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2007 Kia Sorento problems start?

Alternator or charging system failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 600 miles and a quarter of reports before 600 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 70,000 miles.

Is the 2007 Kia Sorento reliable?

It scores 70 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 122nd riskiest of the 365 2007 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2007 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Kia Sorento is best?

Within the 2007–2010 generation, 2009 scores best at 68 out of 100 and 2008 worst at 71. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
