2001 Infiniti Qx4: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2001 Infiniti Qx4

On the 2001 Infiniti Qx4, the failure owners report most often is other body or interior problem, and the reports cluster around 105,000 miles. Across every failure mode on this year, half the dated reports were filed before 102,500 miles. Overall it scores 57 out of 100, elevated risk for a 2001.

Elevated risk for a 2001 — 311th riskiest of the 320 2001 vehicles we can rate. 93 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What breaks on the 2001 Infiniti Qx4

Owners have reported 28 named failure modes on the 2001 Infiniti Qx4, and the three most-reported carry 39% of everything filed.

Other body or interior problem leads with 14 reports, about 0.4 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 70k to 135,000 miles.

Other electrical problem follows with 12 reports, median 90,000 miles.

Strut, shock or spring failure follows with 10 reports, usually reported between 81k to 165,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into suspension (19), body (18) and electrical (13).

The mileage the reports cluster at

50 of the reports on the 2001 Infiniti Qx4 came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 102,500 miles.

Cumulatively, 12% by 50,000 miles, 48% by 100,000 miles and 76% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 3 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 70,000 and 80,000 miles, which alone holds 16% of the dated reports.

8% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles, so this is mostly a story about older, higher-mileage cars.

Severity, and what it costs

Across the named modes, 8 mention a crash and 4 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 3.96, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other body or interior problem at $200–$2,000, other electrical problem at $250–$2,000, strut, shock or spring failure at $500–$2,000 and other suspension problem at $350–$2,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

11% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2001 Infiniti Qx4 draws about 2.5 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 76th percentile of complaint rates among 2001 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 37,225 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2001 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other body or interior problem

My bose radio/cd player in my 2001 qx4 infinti truck is displaying an error message of err2. Cd's are stuck in the player and it makes a clicking sound every time the car is turned on. Called the dealer and infiniti will not take responsibility to replace.

I get an err 2 on my 6 disc cd player in my 2001 qx4. I have tried everything to get my cd's to exit the player, no luck. Is there a resolution? I have tried pushing all combinations of buttons to release the cds. I just got the err 2 and it has never gone away. Cd's will not play or reject, very frustrating, my favorite cds are stuck in player. *tr

Other electrical problem

Bose/clarion nissan/infiniti in-dash 6 disc changer problems caused by plastic gears being used for loading and disc switching mechanisms. Symptoms may be err1, err2, err3, or other err messages along with a clicking sound from the cd changer assembly. This particular cd changer has been repaired at least 3 documented time. I am the second owner and spoke to the previous owner after doing some research. After viewing the service manual and seeing the failed parts, you can see the parts are made of plastic that will eventually get brittle and crack or strip out during normal usage. *nm

100,000 miles NHTSA complaint 598182 filed 2006-10-02

I have a 2001 infiniti qx4 with the bose 6 disk cd changer. The cd changer stopped working around 78,000 miles. It would read error2. I have sent numerous emails to nissan with no reply. Clarion made this cd player for nissan, but got so overwhelmed with repairs that they stopped taking repairs from customers. Now they force you to go through your dealership to get the unit repaired which costs even more money. Once the unit reads err2 you cannot retrieve any of your cds and of course the unit will not play the cds either. This web forum http://forum.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/bbs/show.pl?4/137782 will show you the 100's if not 1000's of people who have been affected. Clarion is having a hard time stocking this part, but they nor nissan are offering to fix the unit or admit poor production. I had to use an outside vendor and it still cost me $300. *nm

Strut, shock or spring failure

Front driver side strut tower housing corrosion causing housing to break(damage). I was driving and while exiting the highway I heard a big noise and the steering wheel was hard to turn. I drove my 2001 infinity qx4 to a auto shop and they said the tower housing was damage it will cause me $1800 to fix because they have to install new tower so I fix it. *tr

70,000 miles NHTSA complaint 860155 filed 2011-06-05

I believe the car's running boards are a safety hazard due to serious rust damage causing weakness of the underlying structure. The hazard can manifest itself as the running boards can easy fail and the driver or any passenger can fall as a result. This is a common problem for qx4s from model years 1997 to 2002 or later. Obviously, it is worse for older cars in area's where salt is used on the roads in winter. I petitioned inifiniti to investigate the hazard and consider rectifying it. They claimed rust damage was not covered and would do nothing. However, I note they in fact had a strut housing recall for our qx4 to fix rust damage. *tr

Recalls on the 2001 model year

NHTSA has issued 4 recall campaigns covering the 2001 Infiniti Qx4, affecting an estimated 69,574 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover steering:column, fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and , structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments and electrical system:ignition. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

STEERING:COLUMN

195,991 vehicles 2011-04-20
Defect
Nissan is recalling certain model year 1996-2004 pathfinder and model year 1997-2003 infiniti qx4 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington d.c., west virginia and wisconsin. In areas of the country in which heavy concentrations of road salt are used, a mixture of snow/water and salt may enter an assembly location hole in the upper strut housing, causing water…
Consequence
The strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. This may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly the steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash.
Remedy
Nissan will inspect the strut housing and repair the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification letter was sent out in may 2011. The second notice was mailed on july 25, 2011. Owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP

372,250 vehicles 2007-09-18
Defect
On certain vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, tennessee, vermont, virginia, west virginia , wisconsin and the district of columbia, during the coating process of the fuel filler tube assembly, an insufficient amount of coating may have been applied at the lower mounting bracket. This could result in an opening in the coating which can allow water to enter and…
Consequence
This may result in surface rust but not perforation of the tube. However, in those areas of the country which use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter, if a mixture of snow/water and salt makes contact with the bare metal, corrosion may occur to a degree which results in perforation of the tube. In this case fuel leakage may occur when filling the tank. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new one with an improved coating process. The recall began on november 26, 2007. Owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS

31,000 vehicles 2001-08-30
Defect
Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. Some of the brackets used to attach the two gas struts to the rear door (hatch) may have been improperly made. At high ambient temperatures, the increase in gas pressure in the strut(s) could cause one or both brackets to bend, resulting in the struts detaching from the bracket(s) when opening or closing the rear door.
Consequence
If both struts detach from the brackets, the door will rapidly fall down, possibly striking someone and causing serious injury.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the strut brackets. Owner notification began september 24, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

9,200 vehicles 2000-12-05
Defect
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. These vehicles may have an ignition lock assembly with improperly seated key cylinder cap connector pins. Vibration can cause the connecting pins to loosen and/or fall out allowing the key cylinder cap to disengage from the key cylinder.
Consequence
If this occurs, the steering wheel lock rod can move, which could lock the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the ignition lock assembly and assemblies with loose or missing end cap connector pins will be replaced. A ring clip will be installed on all others to prevent loosening of the pins.

How it ranks in the 2001 field

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2001 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

Elevated risk for a 2001 — 311th riskiest of the 320 2001 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.

Across the 7 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2000 comes out best at 51 and 2002 worst at 60, with 2001 itself at 57.

If the model year is negotiable, 2000 scores lower than 2001 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 1997–2004 generation specifically, 2000 is the strongest year at 51 and 2002 the weakest at 60.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 1997-2004 generation, 2000 Infiniti Qx4 scores best at 51 and 2002 Infiniti Qx4 worst at 60.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other body or interior problem from about 70k and strut, shock or spring failure from about 81k.

On a 2001 Infiniti Qx4 with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other body or interior problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

What this page cannot tell you

93 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 93 reports, 50 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 54% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2001 Infiniti Qx4?

The most-reported failures are other body or interior problem (14 reports, median 105,000 miles), other electrical problem (12 reports, median 90,000 miles) and strut, shock or spring failure (10 reports, median 120,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2001 Infiniti Qx4 problems start?

Other body or interior problem is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 105,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 70,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 102,500 miles.

Is the 2001 Infiniti Qx4 reliable?

It scores 57 out of 100 on our risk index, which is elevated — 311th riskiest of the 320 2001 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2001 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Infiniti Qx4 is best?

Within the 1997–2004 generation, 2000 scores best at 51 out of 100 and 2002 worst at 60. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
