2011 Ford Fusion: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2011 Ford Fusion

On the 2011 Ford Fusion, the failure owners report most often is other steering problem, and the reports cluster around 88,000 miles. The earliest to appear is cruise control failure, reported by a median of 40,000 miles. Overall it scores 75 out of 100, severe risk for a 2011.

Severe risk for a 2011 — 42nd riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. 3,658 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

The failures owners actually file about

Owners have reported 83 named failure modes on the 2011 Ford Fusion, and the three most-reported carry 38% of everything filed.

Other steering problem leads with 890 reports, about 8.7 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 57k to 125,000 miles.

Airbag inflator rupture follows with 254 reports, usually reported between 59k to 117,500 miles.

Loss of power steering follows with 233 reports, usually reported between 63k to 127,000 miles.

By system, the reports fall mostly into steering (1,342), engine (320) and adas (314).

At what mileage it happens

2,796 of the reports on the 2011 Ford Fusion came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 66,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 33% by 50,000 miles, 72% by 100,000 miles and 91% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 36 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, which alone holds 11% of the dated reports.

17% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: cruise control failure around 39k, other visibility problem around 40k, misfire or rough idle around 40k and other engine problem around 45k.

What happens when these parts fail

Across the named modes, 104 mention a crash, 13 a fire, 49 an injury and 1 a fatality. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.65, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: other steering problem at $350–$2,400, airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, loss of power steering at $600–$2,800 and other engine problem at $300–$4,000. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

16% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2011 Ford Fusion draws about 36 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 97th percentile of complaint rates among 2011 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 102,801 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2011 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Other steering problem

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. The contact was exiting a parking space when the steering failed and became abnormally tight. The power steering came warning light did not illuminate until after the failure. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where he was awaiting diagnosis of the failure and possible repairs. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 1,200.

Airbag inflator rupture

Takata recall. I was unable to open driver's door from the inside. Took it to my ford dealer. They found a broken inner door handle. I was parked when that happened. It cost me $217.83 to get it repaired. Isn't this a recall? If not, it should be!

Takata recall my 2011 ford fusion has been the worse this week. I was taking a road trip to pick up my niece from basic training graduation, I was driving down a busy interstate going about 70mph, when all of a sudden my car decelerate while I was in the fast lane, the wrench light came on. The trouble I had trying to move my car over 3 lanes was very life threatening!! I thank god nothing happened, but I was so close to getting hit several times, I was in tears!! The only thing I could do was turn the car off and then restart it, the engine light stayed on. On my 10 hour adventure that day, this happened 8 different times. Apparently this issue is with the throttle body. This is pathetic of ford to not get this fixed!

Loss of power steering

I have 2011 ford fusion , it has happen several times since I got the car , but everytime I turn it off it would reset itself , but yesterday I was going to my nieces house and I was in a turn and power steering went out and it was hard to turn the steering wheel. I have been reading how there been a lot people been having the same problem I have been having. I don't know why there has not been a recall to get this fix . *tr

15,000 miles NHTSA complaint 920305 filed 2012-05-26

I was driving home on the highway all of a sudden power steering froze. Warning light "service advancetrac" and "power steering failure came on. Next day 8/8/12, took it to the dealership where it still sits. Was told that the part that is bad (the rack and pinion) is on back order. Was just told today 8/17/12 that it will be october before the part will be shipped. Called ford (company) and was told that my case was made a priority and I would have to wait until september 10th for a follow up (ridiculous). A customer who is spending this kind of money shouldn't have to wait a month to get help or wait two months to have his/her vehicle fixed. As of next thursday aug. 23 it will be 16 days without my car. I will then send a letter to the ford for a "last chance to repair my car." after that they have 10 days to fix it. After ten days I can demand a refund or a new car. If ford doesn't comply then I can file a suit against ford according to the mississippi lemon law (consumer protection division of the mississippi attorney general's office) ford I will see you in court! Sincerely a disappointed customer. *tr

Recalls on the 2011 model year

NHTSA has issued 9 recall campaigns covering the 2011 Ford Fusion, affecting an estimated 308,055 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module, air bags:frontal and air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

EQUIPMENT

82,579 vehicles 2014-05-29
Defect
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.
Consequence
The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS

128,616 vehicles 2011-12-07
Defect
Ford is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 ford fusion and mercury milan vehicles equipped with 17 inch steel wheels and built from april 1, 2009, through april 30, 2009, and from december 1, 2009, through november 13, 2010. The wheel studs may fracture, potentially causing a wheel to separate.
Consequence
While driving, multiple stud fractures could occur at the wheel location, and the operator may experience vehicle vibration and/or wheel separation, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear brake disc surface for flatness and replace the discs as necessary. Additionally, the wheel lug nuts will be replaced on all four wheels. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about january 24, 2012. Owners may contact the ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

How it ranks in the 2011 field

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2011 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

Severe risk for a 2011 — 42nd riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. Every score on this site is a rank inside its own model year, which is what makes a 2004 and a 2019 comparable at all.

Across the 15 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2018 comes out best at 68 and 2010 worst at 76, with 2011 itself at 75.

If the model year is negotiable, 2018, 2007, 2008, 2006 and 2009 score lower than 2011 by a margin worth acting on. Same body, same engines, different luck — usually a supplier change or a mid-cycle fix, which the complaint data can show but never explain.

Within the 2010–2012 generation specifically, 2012 is the strongest year at 74 and 2010 the weakest at 76.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 2010-2012 generation, 2012 Ford Fusion scores best at 74 and 2010 Ford Fusion worst at 76.

What to look at before buying one

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: other visibility problem from about 4k, wiring harness or short circuit from about 8k, tail light, brake light or signal failure from about 23k and cruise control failure from about 29k.

On a 2011 Ford Fusion with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether other visibility problem has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

None of this is a diagnosis. It is a list of what other owners of the same model year reported, ordered by when they reported it, which is a good place to point an inspection and a poor place to stop.

What this page cannot tell you

3,658 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 3,658 reports, 2,796 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 76% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

Named failure modes come from matching phrases in the complaint text, so a badly worded complaint can land in the wrong bucket. The effect washes out across hundreds of reports and does not wash out across five.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2011 Ford Fusion?

The most-reported failures are other steering problem (890 reports, median 88,000 miles), airbag inflator rupture (254 reports, median 82,500 miles) and loss of power steering (233 reports, median 82,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2011 Ford Fusion problems start?

Cruise control failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 40,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 30,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 66,000 miles.

Is the 2011 Ford Fusion reliable?

It scores 75 out of 100 on our risk index, which is severe — 42nd riskiest of the 283 2011 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2011 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the Ford Fusion is best?

Within the 2010–2012 generation, 2012 scores best at 74 out of 100 and 2010 worst at 76. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
