2004 BMW 325I: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2004 BMW 325I

On the 2004 BMW 325I, the failure owners report most often is airbag inflator rupture, and the reports cluster around 115,000 miles. The earliest to appear is tail light, brake light or signal failure, reported by a median of 65,000 miles. Overall it scores 66 out of 100, high risk for a 2004.

High risk for a 2004 — 202nd riskiest of the 329 2004 vehicles we can rate. 182 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork.

What owners report breaking

Owners have reported 28 named failure modes on the 2004 BMW 325I, and the three most-reported carry 35% of everything filed.

Airbag inflator rupture leads with 35 reports, about 1.8 per 1,000 vehicles and with the middle half of reports between 84k to 155,000 miles.

Other lighting problem follows with 15 reports, usually reported between 74k to 130,000 miles. 2 of those reports mention a fire.

Headlight failure or clouding follows with 14 reports, usually reported between 60k to 110,000 miles. 1 of those report mention a fire.

By system, the reports fall mostly into airbag (44), lighting (42) and electrical (24).

The mileage the reports cluster at

113 of the reports on the 2004 BMW 325I came with an odometer reading, and half of those were filed before 79,000 miles.

Cumulatively, 24% by 50,000 miles, 62% by 100,000 miles and 85% by 150,000 miles of the dated reports had been filed, with 6 filed above the top of the chart.

The busiest stretch is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, which alone holds 12% of the dated reports.

11% of the dated reports were filed below 36,000 miles.

In the order they tend to show up: tail light, brake light or signal failure around 64k, other lighting problem around 79k, headlight failure or clouding around 90k and airbag inflator rupture around 113k.

What happens when these parts fail

Across the named modes, 12 mention a crash, 12 a fire and 8 an injury. Those are the words owners used in their own complaints, and NHTSA does not verify them, but they are the closest thing in this data to a measure of what a failure actually did.

The average severity weight across every report on this year is 4.89, where a stalled engine or a failed airbag weighs many times more than a rattling trim panel, and a figure this high means the reports are dominated by failures with safety consequences rather than annoyances. The weighting is set out in full on the methodology page.

What the top failures cost to put right, as editorial estimates for an independent US shop rather than figures from NHTSA: airbag inflator rupture at $0–$0, other lighting problem at $120–$1,200, headlight failure or clouding at $150–$1,800 and tail light, brake light or signal failure at $100–$900. Dealer labour, a seized bolt or a part that is no longer made can push any of these past the top of its range.

5% of the reports on this year sit in the engine, transmission, drivetrain or cooling systems — the four where a repair bill is usually four figures.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

How often, against how many were built

Scaled by an estimate of how many of these cars exist, the 2004 BMW 325I draws about 9.5 per 1,000 vehicles, which puts it in the 85th percentile of complaint rates among 2004 vehicles we can rate.

That denominator is the weakest number on the page and it is fair to say so plainly. Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound.

The working figure is 19,133 vehicles. If the true number is twice that, every rate on this page is half what it says; the ranking against other 2004 vehicles, which is what the risk score uses, is far more robust than the rate itself.

Airbag inflator rupture

Takata recall: I am currently in communication with state farm agent, terry wood [(434) 872-2813]. She has assured me that an investigation is underway at this time. We are stating that my bmw's side airbags suddenly deployed and unexpectedly causing me to lose power steering and braking ability. As I approached and entered a right turn lane in an street intersection located in stockton, california, my passenger side airbags suddenly deployed. Startled, I tried to pull over to the side of the road, but, with the loss of power steering, I was not able to safely control the vehicle. After making contact with the curb, I had to use all my strength to correct from it and try to make the upcoming right turn, but without power steering, I was not able to make the turn sharp enough leading me to make a wide turn into the oncoming lane. And without the ability to brake properly and safely, there was no way to avoid the impact. Additionally, the main area of the car with all the damage (driver's front) failed to deploy the appropriate airbag. Terry wood is my point of contact with this investigation. We hope to have bmw take some (if not…

Other lighting problem

I have a major bmw problem. It currently has a service bulletin # si b 63 03 06 lights but bmw will not fix this out of warranty even though they knew about this when my car was under warranty and I was supposed to get full services. I want a formal investigation. *tr

The tail / brake lights on my 2004 bmw 325i were melting. The dealer charged me close to $800 to replace them. Although I reported the problem before, I did so before knowing about the $800 price tag to fix the issue. Bmw should pay for this defective (poorly engineered) safety component. I hope it doesn't take much of 'an investigation' from the NHTSA to make bmw accountable for this. *tr

Headlight failure or clouding

The vehicle came equipped from the factory with bi-xenon auto leveling headlights manufactured by zkw. The past couple months, the light output has steadily decreased. Looking at it further, brown scorch marks are visible in the projector when the headlight is on. On the driver's side, there is also distortion in the upper half of the projector which looks almost as if the top half of the projector has melted and distorted. The light output from the projectors has been reduced to a thin beam of light right below the cutoff, with the driver's side being worse than the passenger. Parked 6 feet away from a wall, this strip of light extends only about 8-12" below the cutoff, putting out virtually no light below that. At night, it is becoming very difficult to see with no light in the foreground; this problem is getting progressively worse. *tr

Recalls on the 2004 model year

NHTSA has issued 5 recall campaigns covering the 2004 BMW 325I, affecting an estimated 47,872 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module, air bags, air bags:frontal:driver side:inflator module and exterior lighting:tail lights. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

How it ranks in the 2004 field

The score at the top of the page, placed among its peers. The zones are the same thresholds the scorer applies, read out of the scorer itself, so the picture and the band word cannot disagree.

Risk score against the rest of the 2004 field

Scores are ranked within the model year, never across years, because an older car has had longer to accumulate reports.

  • Left fewer and less serious reports
  • Right more, or worse
  • Marker this vehicle

Better and worse years of the same car

High risk for a 2004 — 202nd riskiest of the 329 2004 vehicles we can rate. The comparison is always within the same model year, so an older car is never penalised for having had longer to break.

Across the 6 model years of this car that carry enough reports to score, 2005 comes out best at 66 and 2003 worst at 71, with 2004 itself at 66.

No other year of this model scores meaningfully better than 2004, so if this generation is what you want, the year is not the lever.

Within the 1999–2006 generation specifically, 2005 is the strongest year at 66 and 2003 the weakest at 71.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

Risk score by model year, out of 100

Shorter is better. Years with too few reports to score are shown without a bar rather than as a zero, because no data is not good news.

Within the 1999-2006 generation, 2005 BMW 325I scores best at 66 and 2003 BMW 325I worst at 71.

What the numbers say to check

The mileages below are where the first quarter of reports for each mode had already been filed, which makes them the point at which a fault is worth looking for rather than the point at which it happens: tail light, brake light or signal failure from about 50k, headlight failure or clouding from about 60k, other lighting problem from about 74k and airbag inflator rupture from about 84k.

On a 2004 BMW 325I with more miles than that on it, the useful question to put to a seller or a mechanic is whether tail light, brake light or signal failure has been dealt with, and if so with what parts and at whose expense. A car that has already had the repair is in a different position from one that has not.

Treat it as where to point the inspection, not as a prediction. A well-maintained example can sail past every mileage on this page, and a neglected one can fail well before the first of them.

The limits of complaint data

182 owner reports; fleet size estimated from this year's own recall paperwork. Every count on this page is therefore a floor: it is the number of owners who went to the trouble of filing with a federal agency, which is a small and self-selected fraction of the owners who had the fault.

Of those 182 reports, 113 carried an odometer reading, so the mileages here describe 62% of the sample rather than all of it. Owners also round: readings pile up on multiples of ten thousand, which is why this site publishes "about 90,000 miles" and not "91,438".

The failure modes are assigned by software reading the owner's own words, which is accurate in bulk and wrong in individual cases. A mode with a handful of reports may contain a misfiled one.

And nothing here predicts what one car will do. These are other people's complaints, filed years apart, on cars maintained by strangers. Read the page as a map of where this model year has previously gone wrong, then have the specific car in front of you inspected.

Questions this page answers

What are the most common problems with the 2004 BMW 325I?

The most-reported failures are airbag inflator rupture (35 reports, median 115,000 miles), other lighting problem (15 reports, median 80,000 miles) and headlight failure or clouding (14 reports, median 90,000 miles). Counts come from owner complaints filed with NHTSA, which are voluntary, so they show what owners bothered to report rather than every fault that occurred.

At what mileage do 2004 BMW 325I problems start?

Tail light, brake light or signal failure is the earliest failure mode to show up, with a median reported mileage of 65,000 miles and a quarter of reports before 50,000 miles. Across all failure modes on this year, the median report sits at 79,000 miles.

Is the 2004 BMW 325I reliable?

It scores 66 out of 100 on our risk index, which is high — 202nd riskiest of the 329 2004 vehicles we can rate. The score is a comparison against other 2004 vehicles, not a prediction about any individual car, and it is built from complaint rates, severity and how early failures appear.

Which year of the BMW 325I is best?

Within the 1999–2006 generation, 2005 scores best at 66 out of 100 and 2003 worst at 71. Same body, same engines, different luck.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
