2004 UD Ud1400: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2004 UD Ud1400

Only 1 defect report has been filed with NHTSA about the 2004 UD Ud1400, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The report reported parking brake failure.

Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Parking brake failure brakes 1 1 — 114k — 2.9 $250–$1,300 Moderate

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Recalls on the 2004 model year

NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns covering the 2004 UD Ud1400, affecting an estimated 527 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover electrical system:12v/24v/48v battery:cables and seat belts:front:anchorage. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

One caution about reading these together: a recall usually raises the complaint count for the same part, because owners who read about it go and file. The mileages stay informative; the counts get noisy.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES

2,744 vehicles 2005-06-02
Defect
Certain light duty trucks may have had the outer corrugated protective conduit for the battery cable worn through at the rear transmission mounting bracket and the battery cable may rub against the edge of the third frame cross member support and allow the battery cable to short against the frame.
Consequence
This could cause an electrical short, which could result in a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the battery cable with a redesigned cable that will prevent movement of the cable inside the corrugated protective conduit and a protective edge guard will be installed on the lower edge of the third chassis frame across member support. The recall began on september 19, 2005. Owners may contact nissan diesel america at 972-756-5500.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE

1,661 vehicles 2003-06-16
Defect
On certain light duty trucks, the passenger seat belt may have the incorrect seat belt anchor installed.
Consequence
In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the passenger seat frame/anchor, if necessary. Owner notification began october 20, 2003. Owners should contact nissan diesel at 1-972-756-5500.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2004 UD Ud1400 are parking brake failure (1 report, around 114k miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
