1996 Jayco Designer: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 1996 Jayco Designer

Only 3 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 1996 Jayco Designer, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported other wheel or tire problem.

Share of reports filed by each mileage

Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Mileage figures are percentiles of owner-reported readings. Click a column to sort.
Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Other wheel or tire problem wheels 1 0 — — — 0.4 $200–$1,500 High
Other body or interior problem body 1 1 — 8k — 0.4 $200–$2,000 Moderate
Unclassified problem other 1 0 — — — 0.4 — Moderate

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

What owners wrote

Verbatim from NHTSA complaint narratives, trimmed for length. The odometer reading is the one the owner gave.

Dt*: the contact stated a recall letter was received for the structure on the vehicle, #01v251000. The nearest dealer is 90 miles away and the contact has requested the parts for the repair, but the manufacturer is not willing to provide those by mail for self repair. The vehicle does not currently have the problems associated with the recall.

Recalls on the 1996 model year

NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns covering the 1996 Jayco Designer, affecting an estimated 2,848 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover vehicle speed control and structure. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

6,285 vehicles 2006-08-30
Defect
On certain motor homes built on ford chassis, the speed control deactivation switch may overheat.
Consequence
Overheating could result in smoke or burning, and in an underhood fire.
Remedy
Ford is conducting this recall (please see 06v286) and will install a fused wiring harness into the speed control system free of charge. Owners may contact ford at 1-866-436-7332 or jayco at 1-800-283-8267.

STRUCTURE

12,281 vehicles 2001-08-01
Defect
Vehicle description: travel and fifth wheel trailers. The fasteners used on the underfloor can either come loose or pull through the underfloor causing portions or all of a section of underfloor to detach from the vehicle.
Consequence
If this occurred, the section could fall to the pavement, potentially causing a crash for following vehicles.
Remedy
Dealers will add or replace fasteners. Owner notification began september 28, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact jayco at 1-219-825-5861.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Every year of the Jayco Designer

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 1996 Jayco Designer are other wheel or tire problem (1 report) and other body or interior problem (1 report, around 8k miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
