2012 Haul Master Trailer: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2012 Haul Master Trailer

Only 1 defect report has been filed with NHTSA about the 2012 Haul Master Trailer, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The report reported tire blowout or tread separation.

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Recalls on the 2012 model year

NHTSA has issued 1 recall campaign covering the 2012 Haul Master Trailer, affecting an estimated 34,029 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover exterior lighting. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

Defect
Harbor Freight Tools (Harbor Freight) is recalling certain model year 2006-2016 Haul Master trailers, model numbers 90154, 42708, 90153, 66771, 42709, 94564 trailers, and 2013-2016 Haul Master trailers, model numbers 62170, 62209, 61730, and 69897. The affected trailers may be equipped with incorrectly positioned rear lamp brackets that may not illuminate the license plate. The lights fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence
The trailers may be less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy
Harbor Freight will notify owners and will provide them with a new tail light package, free of charge. The recall began on October 10, 2016. Owners may contact Harbor Freight customer service at 1-805-388-1000.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Every year of the Haul Master Trailer

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2012 Haul Master Trailer are tire blowout or tread separation (1 report, around 10 miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
